A bill advancing out of a Kentucky Senate committee on Thursday would make it a crime to insult or taunt a police officer to the point where the taunts provoke a violent response.
Senate Bill 211 passed by a 7-3 vote, according to reports. The proposal was a response to riots throughout the country last summer, said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Danny Carroll, R-Benton, a retired police officer.
"In these riots, you see people getting up in officers' faces, yelling in their ears, doing everything they can to provoke a violent response," Carroll said, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

It’s amazing these clownish dimwits have no appreciation for the first amendment. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

So does the violent response have to occur before the person is charged? this doesn't make sense, on a First Amendment level. But I do like that they are trying to defend the cops.

This is codifying an ancient unwritten rule called "Contempt of Cop." Law enforcement officers have broad discretion to decide whether to arrest. One excellent way to have the officer decide to make an arrest is to commit Contempt of Cop.

Our society has become so weak and willing to trade any right all in the name of security. If our police force is incapable of standing up to verbal abuse then they are not capable to protecting us.They would be lacking self control and discipline. BUT then we all know this not about "protecting" our police force. It is about creating another law to crush the will and spirit of citizens by taking away their right to protest and speech. The police state is getting stronger everyday and our freedoms are vanishing rapidly.

Getting in an officers face (space invading and screaming) like getting in any normal person's face is harassment. Arresting this social mutant hardly makes us a police state.

#3, I like your "Contempt of Cop" rule. Particularly since every single Democrat could be arrested for it. My goal in life now is to find a place where the police force is made up exclusively of Dirty Harrys. The constitution was a nice idea...as long as there were nice people. Now, since no government is enforcing the constitution and is in fact coming up with every goofy policy to protect violent criminals, I'll take my chances with a place that's protected by .44 Magnums and cops ready, willing, and able to use them on the bad guys.

Just who is “Kentucky Bill” and why doesn’t he understand the constitution?

Any police officer who can't calmly absorb a few insults does not have the mental toughness to be a police officer. A night stick jammed into the rioter's throat does not count as violence, it's simply prudent self-defense..

An asphalt facial and wood shampoo with a night stick would go a long way to make a fanatical green hair tattooed fat girl think twice about her actions.

I'm reminded of a movie, wherein the protagonist places a roll of quarters inside of a sock ........

I didn't read all the comments but, thanks for the support from those who did.
Having said that - this sounds idiotic, I have been called every name in the book, in many languages and never once considered that to be an assault. It did, however cause me to think of every possible violation I could think of to add to the original charge or citation. That used to be called pencil whipping.
I will say this, if someone spits on or is close enough to breathe on (remember covid) an officer, I think that could be considered an assault (or battery if you want to get technical).

How is 'insult' defined?
Asking for BJC. He has a difficult time with word definitions.

Protecting law enforcement? Humbug! Sticks and stones... The law makes it a misdemeanor if to "accost, insult, taunt, or challenge 'a law enforcement officer with offensive or derisive words, or by gestures or other physical contact...'" What exactly constitutes an "insult"?
And we all stand for Free Speech? More anti-hate BS, supported by people who should know better. Let's toss in civil forfeiture for arrest while we're at it. Support the badge...unless it's the FBI. How many here "insulted" them over the past years? Could soon be a crime in KY.

Privatize the police so we aren't paying for unionized public employees who stand around sucking their thumbs while they watch rioters burn and loot.

I'm all for supporting law enforcement, but it depends on whose side the cops are on at the time of the incident.

Cops already have more than enough. Back in my cop days I had a theory that nobody could drive a mile without committing at least one ticketable offense. I was never proven wrong. Maybe crossing the solid yellow line, maybe turning on a turn signal too late, maybe too little tread on tires or a license plate light out. There was always something. And that was 40 years ago. Now we can't even exist without breaking some dopey law somewhere. Now they want to add this?
I'd say it wont pass constitutional scrutiny but with the current scotus pretty much anything would, as long as it supports the deep state.

Hi #19. Like the cops in San Jose who actually held the doors shut while a woman was spit on and egged?

Indiana has had a law like that for decades. It pertains to all people though, not just police. Basically it says that anyone who is provoking someone to fight or trying to in various ways is guilty of provocation. I believe that it used to be a misdemeanor but I think they have now changed it to an infraction.

I'm glad some states are protecting their law enforcement, as opposed to the ones run by libertards who value the criminal element and illegal alien vote more than they do their tax-paying, law-abiding citizens...
