The Coup de Grâce for Nikki

“I don’t think he’s going to be in the picture. I don’t think he can. He’s fallen so far.” Thus spoke Nikki Haley -- former South Carolina governor, former ambassador to the UN, and now presidential aspirant -- exposing once again her self-serving bona fides. In denigrating Donald Trump, the establishment Republican ended up revealing to Trump’s loyal base of 75-80 million supporters just how much she is motivated by opportunism. Also, just how out of touch she is with the rank and file. Haley’s betrayal of President Trump took the form of a forceful condemnation: “We need to acknowledge he let us down.

Doesn't she have some pressure to buckle under to? Maybe she could ban a flag or something to appease a vocal minority of vocal minorities.

Nikki, I once had high hopes for you. You haven't figured Trump out yet why we voted for him in 2016 and 2020 in unprecedented numbers. More importantly you haven't figured us out. Let me offer you a little assistance: First constitutionally oriented voters have had an unserved thirst for representation and have been monumentally disappointed in what we perceived to be a "uniparty." You saw us in 2010 when the left called us teabaggers. In 2016 we expressed our dissatisfaction in the established GOP by nominating an outsider. That should have been a wake up call that the insider cabal was being rejected. In the the four years of the Trump administration we learned that what we once thought of as a uniparty was much more sinister and in fact a vase deep and wide swamp of corruption. This exposed itself in the refusal to accept the legitimacy of our president and the prominent members of the GOP showing their cards which ranged from a handful willing to support us by supporting out president, Jordan, Nunes, Ghomert to those stabbing him and us in the back. And you think there's still room for your dagger? What makes you think that we are going to fold our tents and go away? Where the hell are we going to go? Could you possibly be that stupid, have you done that little homework, are you that disinterested in understanding what the hell has been happening? Yea, you and your ilk are done.

The headline says it all. I am surprised at how many Republican politicians understand nothing about their base. Breaking with Trump alienates at least 75% of Republican voters, maybe more. I think they are embarrassed by people who are patriotic and who reject the America-bad, America-racist view of the core Democrats. Haley's smarter move would have been to come out in support of Trump in the hope she could be the VP nominee if he ran again or the actual nominee with his support if he didn't. But at least she has exposed herself for who she really is. Next.

Haley, once a darling of conservatives everywhere and PDT's Ambassador to the UN, is a politician betting on three years into the future, not today. By then FPDT will have proven himself a "power" in American politics, or will be enjoying his Palm Beach Elbe in relative silence. Expect the '24 GOP "sweepstakes" to feature a number of players, like '16 did. By then the "patriots" should have their own party, offering some MAGA-knockoff alternative.

Haley knows she has fumbled the ball by being one of the first to adopt the leftist view about the capitol "insurgency" being caused by Trump. She had an article in this morning's Wall St. Journal explaining herself, trying to thread the needle in her favor. You could never vote for her and expect she will not buckle under at the first sign of left-wing pressure. Pelosi, Schumer, and the news media could force her to shift her positions in a heartbeat.

We are living in what seem to me to be terribly fraught times, times that are even more worrisome than those at the height of Cold War tensions, when we schoolchildren were drilled on what to do in case of a nuclear attack--an attack that was in fact highly unlikely to occur.
