Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said on Monday that he would not run for reelection in 2022.
“Today I announce that I will not seek a seventh term in the United State Senate in 2022. For everything, there is a season," Shelby said in a statement.
“Although I plan to retire, I am not leaving today. I have two good years remaining to continue my work in Washington. I have the vision and the energy to give it my all," the 86-year-old senator added.
Shelby's announcement follows months of speculation that he was eyeing retirement, including The Associated Press reporting on Friday that he had indicated that he would not run again.
And yet somehow Democrats NEVER retire due to "there is a season".

They make these announcements as if they're trying to break the news to us gently. He's 86, with two years to go?! OMG.

He's going to be 87 in May. 89 in what would have been his next election year. We need term limits and retirement ages.

A RINO's RINO heads to pasture. We can only hope that he keeps his word.

Mo Brooks is the best choice. Sessions is not an option.

not much to talk about with this announcement. the only saving grace will be that he will inject new southern conservative blood into the republican side of the senate. i'd like to have the money he's walking away with just in his senate pension alone.

Good news. He was/is a true RINO. Mo Brooks should replace him.

From what his constituents say, he should have retired several terms ago. Nobody is fooled that these extremely old Senators are able to do all they should be doing. Too much is delegated to staff and young interns. Its embarrassing that we let this happen.

Republican, RINO, Democrat, Independent.....doesn't matter. Term limits. Two four year terms for the house and two or three four year terms for the Senate. Enough is enough. Won't ever happen. They enjoy the perks, the power and slopping at the money trough too much to ever let it happen. I don't care who you are. If you are over 80, go home.

I wonder how many retirements there would be tomorrow if their staff of aides was cut significantly.

Our Republican senator in Ohio is retiring as well. Is this 2018 all over again. The Pubs just give up?

He is already 16 years past his due date. No one over 70 should be in Congress.

The Founders were some brilliant people for their time but they never thought about term limits.
Probably because back then they died at 65 years old.

An 86 y/o man or woman should not even be in consideration for 'running'.
There comes a time when you should simply retire or somehow open that job to the next generation. Don't be like Dianne Feinstein!

I have known Richard Shelby personally since 1978. He was a Democrat then. He changed parties, but he is still a big-spending Democrat at heart,
He and Richard Burr ARE the SWAMP. Corrupt Washington politicians who don’t give a damn about the voters in the states they claim to represent.
I am thrilled both will be gone after 2022, but Burr should be in jail for his insider trading. Shelby is just an egomaniac who lives to spend OUR money.

Every elected official and government worker over 80 years old needs to retire today. I know retirement is not a biblical concept, and there might be something to say for them working instead of collecting a pension worth as much as their paychecks, but I don't think any of these old folks would be still employed/not retired if they were in any other profession. Spending other people's money and getting paid to do so must lead to some really good living. They just can't seem to let all that power and good living go. Good grief!

I don't know much about Shelby. Since he is unknown, that probably means he is a Uniparty member playing his part.
