Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) has made good on his promise to begin his efforts to decriminalize all drug use step by step with the introduction of several bills at the start of the new legislative session. Senate Bill 57 creates “safe injection sites” where drug addicts can use illicit drugs under medical supervision. Senate Bill 73 lowers the criminal penalties on users and dealers of heroin, opiates or opium derivatives, salts, cannabis, PCP and other dangerous drugs. Still promised, but not yet introduced, is a bill Wiener says will legalize all psychedelic drugs such as LSD and magic mushrooms.

No! No! No! The "War On Drugs" is only fifty years old - - let's give it a chance to work. Look at how much better things are now - - after spending trillions of dollars - - watching thousands be murdered - - millions of persons jailed - - oh, what a lovely war!
And the worst part is - - that some people who post on this forum - - who are otherwise great believers in personal freedom and Constitutional rights - - actually support this brutal, corrupt, and totally ineffective "war." Nice going, guys! Let's have more of the same!

There are two sides to this and I tend to swing between them. Legalize everything and you will get more addicts, more OD deaths, and more grieving parents. Mattie Earp, Wyatt's 2nd wife died of an opium OD (some say deliberately). Opium was legal in many places back then along with gambling, prostitution, and alcohol.
On the other side, you could put the cartels and dealers out of business and reduce crime. My guess would be substantially less crime plus freeing up prison space, courts, etc. You would have to make it available at attractive prices lest the street dealers undercut the legitimate dope shops. It's what happened in Cali when the greedy state saw a tax bonanza from weed, set the tax too high and are being outsold by 'Tyrone' and his street corner business.

I don't see how this will decrease crime. Just where will the addicts get their drugs from? Are the taxpayers going to have our taxes raised so as to give them away free? If not, addicts will still have to steal or sell their bodies to get money to buy the drugs to use in the so-called 'safe' places.
And what kind of country will we become when our elected officials want us all dumbed down and drugged?

Legalize It. Drug criminalization is no more effective than prohibition was. It empowers criminal cartels and corrupt politicians.
Just make it legal and let Darwin sort everything out

Liberty is perilous.
Either one is responsible for one's own health and welfare or the government is.
Demanding the right to control one's own chemistry is not the same as advocating drug usage......any more than owning guns is an invitation to homicide.
Liberty is for adults only.
Try to be one.
The gooberment is not your Daddy or your friend.
A dose of acid might do ya'lll some good.
I don't do it any more but it sure made me re-think my uptight upbringing.

I am sure the ordinary working Joe will have to foot the bill for all the devastation hard drug use will cause to our society.

The folks who imagine that ending laws against drugs will be beneficial are deluding themselves. Opiates are legal for certain pain, and even when legalized, tens of thousands wind up overdosing and dying each year. Legalize these horror show drugs and not only will the death rates climb, but the violence rate will climb a lot too.
Talk to a police officer who has arrested a PCP user. Insane, ultra violent and superhuman strength. Perfect person to meet in some public place, right?

"Brave New World"'s "Soma". Why are the Russians relatively lenient when it comes to alcoholism. "Soma". A drunk, stoned or whacked out populace is a lot easier to handle than one that's sober and knows what's going on. And in our case, armed.

Scott D San Francisco Wiener. There, fixed it for ya. But seriously, why would California need to legalize more drugs? They're already on heavy hallucinogens. Too bad they're not on antipsychotics. I wonder if we could put Pelosi on some kind of anti-Botox drug, like Antabuse for alcoholics.
