President-elect Joseph R. Biden said Thursday that there’s almost no such thing as spending too much money right now given the “twin crises” of the coronavirus pandemic and the associated economic fallout. “There’s no time to waste. We have to act, and we have to act now,” Mr. Biden said in a speech in Wilmington, Delaware. “We cannot afford inaction.” Mr. Biden unveiled additional details about the $1.9 trillion rescue package he released Thursday.(Snip) He said “a growing number of top economists” are saying the long-term debt situation will be more stable “if we seize this moment with vision and purpose.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed concern that her own colleagues in Congress might have shared her location to the mob of fanatic Trump supporters while they were storming the Capitol last Wednesday. Ocasio-Cortez's remarks comes as other Democrats have sounded off on the possibility that some GOP members of the Congress abetted the rioters as they stormed the building. Lawmakers were instructed to head for a designated 'extraction point' to seek protection from the chaos, but AOC asserted that that wasn't really an option 'because there were QAnon and white-supremacist sympathizers and, frankly, white-supremacist members of Congress in that extraction point

President Trump served up a brief summary on Thursday of his achievements in stopping U.S. involvement in “endless” wars, days before he is to leave office. Cut off from Twitter and other social media platforms, Mr. Trump issued a statement via a White House press release calling attention to his efforts to bring home troops from various theaters of conflict. “United States military troops in Afghanistan are at a 19-year low,” Mr. Trump said. “Likewise, Iraq and Syria are also at the lowest point in many years. I will always be committed to stopping the endless wars.” U.S. troop levels are scheduled to hit a low

The California law professor who drew outrage for his fiery speech with Rudy Giuliani before the Capitol riot and his unfounded attacks on Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ citizenship has agreed to retire. Chapman University announced John Eastman’s departure Wednesday night after the private college in Orange County previously condemned Eastman’s remarks but stopped short of firing him. “Dr. Eastman’s departure closes this challenging chapter for Chapman and provides the most immediate and certain path forward,” Chapman President Daniele Struppa said in a statement.(Snip) Eastman appeared on the rally stage with Rudy Giuliani last week and made false and incendiary claims that election officials

The White House on Wednesday released a 10-page document outlining the Trump administration’s strategy as of 2018 for countering China—stressing the role of India as a new ally in Asia. The document contains few surprises, outlining plans to support allies and boost the economic and counter-espionage efforts of neighboring states. But US cooperation with India features prominently in the assessment. “A strong India, in cooperation with like-minded countries, would act as a counterbalance to China,” it says.
“China aims to dissolve US alliances and partnerships in the region. China will exploit vacuums and opportunities created by these diminished bonds.”

President Trump and his supporters were likened to dictators, despots, terrorists, and genocidal maniacs this week by dueling cable news competitors and elected officials. MSNBC viewers watched programming on Wednesday with analogies to the Ba’ath Party under Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, while CNN’s were warned about large amounts of “Nazis” and “Klan” members permeating the Republican Party. The cable news punditry was punctuated by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California likening Mr. Trump to the terrorist who orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks—Osama bin Laden—during an interview with “PBS NewsHour.”(Snip) CNN’s Don Lemon went rhetorically darker by bringing up the Third Reich.

It was the first blockbuster case to surface in the federal corruption probe of Los Angeles City Hall—a multi-count indictment accusing former Councilman Mitchell Englander of taking envelopes of cash, lying to the FBI about that money and obstructing its investigation. Englander, while serving in office, made false statements to FBI agents during three separate interviews, prosecutors said, providing untrue information about his dealings with a businessman who gave him $15,000 in two casino bathrooms.(Snip) But now, prosecutors are voicing objections to the sentence recommended by federal probation officials: three years’ probation, a $9,500 fine and no jail time or community service.

A Texas woman is accused of bringing a child overseas so doctors would mutilate the girl’s genitalia, a disturbing case that marks the first time federal prosecutors have brought such a charge in the U.S. Zahra Badri, a 39-year-old Houston resident, was slapped with a federal indictment this week charging her with “knowingly transporting a minor from the United States in foreign commerce for the purpose of FGM,” or female genital mutilation, authorities said Wednesday. The practice of removing a child’s genitalia—a brutal procedure that has been reported in dozens of countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East—has been banned in the U.S. since 1996.

Baseball star Curt Schilling has claimed his insurance policy has been canceled by AIG after the Donald Trump fan tweeted in support of the Capitol rioters. The Red Sox legend tweeted: 'We will be just fine, but wanted to let Americans know that @AIGinsurance canceled our insurance due to my "Social Media profile".'(Snip) After some followers questioned his claims about AIG Tuesday, Schilling replied with a screenshot of his alleged correspondence with the company. He later said he was a 'AAA customer with zero claims in our 17 years with them'. The screenshot read in part that canceling Schilling's insurance plan was 'a management decision

The city of St. Paul apologized for its role in institutional racism on Wednesday and agreed to form a new commission to study reparations for Black residents whose ancestors were enslaved. The City Council voted 7-0 to form the St. Paul Recovery Act Community Reparations Commission as a way to promote racial healing. The resolution creating the commission also apologizes for slavery at Fort Snelling and the destruction of St. Paul's Rondo neighborhood in the 1950s. The US designation of the Houthi movement in Yemen as a terrorist organisation is likely to lead to a famine on a scale not seen for 40 years, the UN’s most senior humanitarian official has said. Mark Lowcock, director general of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs called for the decision to be reversed, saying the cost of food was likely to rise by as much as 400%, way beyond the reach of many aid agencies. The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, designated the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah (Supporters of God), as a foreign terrorist organisation on Sunday,

Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin has endorsed social media comments demanding Donald Trump’s cameo in the film’s sequel be digitally removed and replaced with one of an older version of Culkin himself. Culkin replied to a tweet that asked “petition to digitally replace trump in ‘home alone 2’ with 40-year-old macaulay culkin” with the single word: “Sold.” Culkin then followed up by responding “Bravo” to another tweet that contained a comic edit of Trump replaced by empty space. Trump appears briefly in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York when Culkin, as its hero Kevin, asks him for directions to the lobby

It's OK to be white? Not in New America, buster. No white guilt? Horrifying. White men need to step aside in favor of advancement of bLACK lives, experts say, adding that diversity and inclusion is for everyone, except for white people.
