Covaxin: What was the rush to approve
India's homegrown vaccine?

Original Article

How can a coronavirus vaccine be cleared for emergency use by millions of vulnerable people in a "clinical trial" mode? No idea, says Dr Gagandeep Kang, one of India's best-known vaccine experts. "Either you are doing a clinical trial or not". Clinical trials - a three-phased process - determine whether the vaccine induces good immune responses and whether it causes any unacceptable side-effects. On Sunday, India's drug regulator gave emergency approval of a locally produced coronavirus vaccine, called Covaxin, before the completion of trials. The government-backed vaccine has been developed by Bharat Biotech, a 24-year-old vaccine maker, which has a portfolio of 16 vaccines and exports to 123 countries.

A small group of House lawmakers came close to physically fighting early Thursday morning as the congressional count of electoral votes stretched into the wee hours and a Pennsylvania Democrat charged that Republicans had been telling “lies” about his state’s votes. Rep. Morgan Griffiths, R-Va., objected after Rep. Conor Lamb, D-Pa., said a breach of the Capitol by an angry mob earlier in the day was “inspired by lies, the same lies you are hearing in this room tonight.”

President Donald Trump defended his supporters who stormed Capitol Hill Wednesday, arguing that it was a consequence of his election being stolen. “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously and viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly and unfairly treated for so long,” Trump wrote on Twitter. [SNIP] The president’s comments about the afternoon protests were first restricted by Twitter from getting retweeted or shared but were later removed entirely.

A mob of angered Trump supporters has occupied the front lawn of Washington's Democratic Governor Jay Inslee's mansion as they also surrounded state capitols in Texas, California, Georgia, Michigan, Kansas and Oklahoma. While chaos gripped Washington D.C., where one woman has been shot dead and dozens of police officers injured, protesters made their way to Inslee's Olympia home where one state trooper stood guard. The trooper urged members of the crowd to stand back but they quickly surrounded the building chanting and he was forced to retreat to stand guard in front of the door.

Donald Trump’s supporters, including fringe groups like the Proud Boys, are expected to flood DC on Jan. 6 to protest the election results. Mayor Muriel Bowser has urged District residents to avoid confrontation and stay away from the rallies. But what if Proud Boys show up at local restaurants or other businesses? Do they have the right to turn them away? The short answer: yes. The DC Human Rights Act prevents businesses from discriminating against people for their political affiliation (as well as gender, race, religion, etc). But fringe ideological groups are not political affiliations, says Veritas Law attorney Scott Rome.

Multiple air traffic controllers in New York heard a chilling threat Monday in audio obtained exclusively by CBS News: "We are flying a plane into the Capitol on Wednesday. Soleimani will be avenged." The threat refers to Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general killed last year in a U.S. drone strike ordered by President Trump. It was made on the one-year anniversary of Soleimani's death, for which Iranian officials have long vowed revenge. It's unclear who sent the threat. While the government does not believe the warning of an attack is credible, it is being investigated as a breach of aviation frequencies, CBS News has learned.

It was one of the highest-grossing films of the 1970s and has been delighting audiences ever since. But now the hit musical Grease has become the latest target of ‘woke’ critics who have condemned it for racism, sexism, homophobia and ‘slut-shaming’. Outraged detractors have called for the story of Sandy and Danny’s rollercoaster high-school romance to be cancelled – and never shown on TV again. When BBC1 screened the movie on Boxing Day, 42 years after its cinema release, youngsters took to social media to label it ‘rapey’ and misogynist for showing how strait-laced Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John, transformed herself into a vamp to bag the man of her dreams...

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a blistering takedown of some Republicans’ first objection to the Electoral College vote, saying the presidential outcome was “not unusually close” and warning the effort to overturn the result could send the country into a “death spiral". “Nothing before us proves illegality anywhere near the massive scale that would have tipped the entire election. Nor can public doubt alone justify a radical break when the doubt itself was incited without any evidence,” the Kentucky Republican said as the Senate convened to hear an objection to Mr Biden’s victory in Arizona. “The Constitution gives us here in Congress a limited role.

Based on his rally speech this week, Trump apparently thinks he won the November election because there was a red wave for everyone except him. How else could all those Republicans win congressional seats on his “coattails,” while he lost?

It’s often hard to understand the impact an event will have in the future when you are going through it in real time or soon after. Today’s storming of the Capitol, including rioting, is one of those real-time events about which I’m comfortable reaching some conclusions.(Snip)The fact that we have seen violent conduct from the left in recent years also directed at key institutions does not excuse it.(Snip) And yes, it’s possible (but not clear) that some of the violent rioters were outside agitators. Politics is not fair, and it’s never been more unfair than how Trump supporters are treated by the media.
