You can tell someone is smarting from an inferiority complex when he insists on being addressed as “Dr.” on the basis of holding an academic doctorate rather than being a physician. Ph.D. holders who have genuine accomplishments don’t make you call them “Doctor,” which is why you never hear about “Dr. Paul Krugman” and “Dr. George Will.” None of the professors I knew at Yale, even the ones who were eminent in their fields, insisted on the title, and I think most of them would have scoffed if someone had addressed them as “Dr.” The only reason

It’s not just Germany with the “doctor” thing. The Brits list their degrees after their names on the return address of the letters they mail, among other places. No wonder that country is in the toilet.

I wonder how many mediocre students got Ed.Ds based on the now-discredited theory of "whole language" for teaching reading? Once a theory is discredited, shouldn't they be required to relinquish their discredited degrees?

I believe it’s not even called a “Dissertation”, but an “Executive Position Paper”. A dissertation requires some original research which is supposed to add to the corpus of knowledge in the field of study and must be defended in front of a board of experts in that field. There is no corpus of knowledge in any “education” degree and an executive position paper is no more than a high school term paper.

USC compares their EdD and PhD programs in Education. The EdD is like an MBA for teachers, a program for practitioners to be completed in-service, burnishing their credentials to move up the school system hierarchy. The PhD program is for people who want to do original research into educational theory and become professors of education. The title "Dr." makes sense for an EdD to use at the district office or at conferences to give oneself a little more professional cachet, but it's just a silly pretension when used outside that context. It's also more than a little condescending for the media to insist on it.

I couldn’t finish this article. Kyle Smith is a sly one. Making the point that exhibiting one’s academic bone fides is gauche he then smoothly works in the fact that he went to “Yale” instead of just plain “college.” He may be right that accomplished and distinguished PhD’s rarely use the title “Dr.”but to then cite the odd and perhaps sexually predatory academic fraud Paul Krugman and the exceedingly pretentious, tedious poor judge of character George Will as “distinguished PhD’s” reveals a lack of perception. Academia is in dire enough straits without scholars of the hambone variety further embarrassing the whole enterprise.

#3-- a personal story. I used to show purebred dogs all over the country, and into Canada. At one show in the NE US, I met a guy named "Fred" (let's call him). I asked how he preferred to be addressed. His answer, "I prefer to be called Doctor." He was an MD. He looked demanding. I answered, "Okay, please call me Major, or Sir." (that was my military rank at the time).
He was not amused. We didn't become buddies.

Please remember that her degree is an EdD. NOT a PhD. EdD is Not nearly as much work or research as a PhD. As you can see from reading her "masterpiece," there are no original ideas. They string together the ideas of others with copious footnotes -- very little more (so they can't be called plagiarists; her husband can be clawed that, but I digress). Please don't confuse the two. I earned a PhD and teach at a university, where we are addressed as "Professor..." by the students. I quite like that, but b/c of the hierarchical rankings (Full Professor, Associate, Assistant), some of the more pompous fulls don't like the associates or assistants being referred to as "Pofessor." Some students call me "Mister..." and I don't mind that, just as long as the students don't call me by my first name.

You say 'Doctor' for about a week after someone gets that kind of doctorate, as a way of celebrating their achievement. And even then, only the first one or two times are serious, any after that are a form of teasing.

Adulterous Jill has positioned herself as an expert on Community College education. She will have clout in Washington on the matter, just as Barack's husband, Michelle, got involved in the school lunch program.
Adulterous Jill ignored the welfare reform of Dollar Bill Clinton in the 1990s, and its impact on community colleges. The welfare reform required recipients - usually single ,mothers - to get a job or get job training, in order to continue to receive welfare cash.
Community college enrollment was the logical place to go for baby mommas. Many of them would enroll, collect their Pell Grant and student loan cash-out during the semester, and then withdraw from classes. The following semester, they would do the same thing. (My late best friend taught English at a community college in Upstate NY, and talked about seeing the baby mommas on the first day of classes only, then reappearing at the first class of the new semester.)
Retention rates were profoundly affected by the in and out stuff as described. In addition, open enrollment will guarantee a relatively high attrition rate. There is no reason to retain students who cannot learn.
How silly can community colleges become?
In Erie County, Pennsylvania, a community college was estabished in the 1970s. It had no campus, no faculty, just administrators, and contracted for teaching by placing cc students into local university classes. The attempt failed, soi a replacement community college was created, same approach, went bankrupt.
A few years ago, a regional community college for Northern Pennsylvania was created, covering Erie County and other counties. Distance education was the model.
Yet Erie County is moving ahead, creating the third version of a community college, competing with the regional community college. The Erie County version will have a campus and a faculty and administration. Estimated cost? 125 million dollars.
Who will pay? With Adulterous Jill's foot on the gas pedal, the federal government will pay for both versions, or at least a big portion of the cost.
We are looking at an impending rainwreck.

In the education field, edD's insist on being called "Dr". I taught at a high school and we had three teachers who insisted that all their students refer to them as "Doctor" .... that included two elementary teachers. Is there anything more ridiculous than third graders calling their teacher "Doctor"?
