This year’s Nativity display in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square has drawn sharp criticism for its unconventional features, which range from the bizarre to the hideous.“St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican has hosted a few unorthodox nativity scenes over the years, but this season’s entry looks like it came from outer space,” reports Reuters. “The futuristic ceramic crèche – which includes an astronaut and a character reminiscent of Darth Vader from Star Wars – has received so many terrible reviews that, if it were a Broadway play, it probably would have closed on opening night.”Here are just a few photos:

I'm convinced that the current Pope doesn't believe in God.

Nothing says Christmas like a Nativity display with Egyptian styled figures. What lame brained adult approved of this display? Did the designers of this display ever see a Nativity before? Ugly only scratches the surface of this mess, and it's outside the Vatican in St. Peter's Square. What an insult.

This is not a spiritual man. I remember Pope John Paul XXIII. What a blessing he was to the church. This so called pope is not a holy man and has no business being pope. He's destroying the church on purpose. I read the pope before him was threatened with death if he didn't quit and I'm betting Soros picked this one.

The person occupying the altar of the pope is going full Pachamanca on the catholic church. I say this as a catholic who does not subscribe to the belief system of Jorge Bergoglio...

Art has lost the spirit of trying to illuminate our world and capture evanescent beauty for someone who just wasn't there to be their own witness to creation. This display is a perfect example of modern artists being lazy and indulgent children whose product is admired only by other children who desire praise for their own indulgent crap.

#7, I think you’re mixing up your numbers. It was John XXIII and John Paul II. The former started the disasterous Vatican II Council but died before its completion. The latter, along with Reagan and Thatcher, destroyed the Soviet Union and the Communist Bloc, though our media gives all the credit to Gorbachev.

It's very much of its time - 1968ish. There's a whole lot of soviet public art still around in the genre. I actually think the *symbolism* of the astronaut, like a fourth wiseman bringing the then newly-conquered moon to lay at the baby Jesus' feet, is sweet. No idea what the orc is supposed to be, who invited him? The angel is ribbed for pleasure. The Holy Family looks ticked off. The neon lighting and hideous flashlight-under-the-chin uplighting makes it straight up depressing instead of 60s faux naive. But it's all SO VERY UGLY in that outmoded willfully in-your-face style of 55 years ago "modern". There is no joy in it.
