New Jersey's comprehensive ban on single-use plastic and paper bags was signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday, marking what some claim is the "strongest" measure against single-use plastics in the nation.
The new law prohibits all stores and food-service businesses statewide from using such items, as well as disposable food containers and cups made out of polystyrene foam, starting in May 2022. (Snip) New Jersey lawmakers say the state would be the first to ban paper bags. "Paper bags require resources and energy to produce, contributing to pollution," Murphy said in a statement, adding that moving forward, the state will focus on switching to reusable bags.

"Sir, would you like to purchase a bag for your groceries? It's only 50 cents."
This is actaully a veiled grocery tax if you don't bring your own bag. Growing up I remember my Mom and Grandma had these folding metal cage shopping carts to haul their groceries home from the store. It's time to start making them popular again I think.

This is how socialism works. All the decisions are made by government officials. They take your property, and liberty, and if you want something, you have to beg for you own money back. It is becoming apparent that most people want to live in a commune.

Reusable bags can get filthy, and people put them up on the counters and conveyer belts. The governor is a small time tyrant.

Sheer, utter stupidity! So typical of the leftist cesspool that NJ has become.

What are they talking about? "Single-use" plastic bags? After I take my groceries home, we save the plastic bags and use them for all manner of things. There is no substitute for them. If we didn't have them, we would have to buy some just for the many uses we put them to.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe even (hard left) Consumer Reports warned against reusable bags because they harbor bacteria unless you wash them regularly. And what about my dog's poop?

Let me make sure I have this straight. You want to mandate face diapers and shutdowns to avoid the spread of a virus but then mandate that people re-use germ infested bags at the same exact time. Do I have that straight there comrade?

What is a single-use plastic or paper bag? When we bring home a bag of groceries or other "stuff", we generally re-use the bag to line our trash cans before disposing of it. Therefore, that single-use plastic or paper bag has been converted to a multi-use plastic or paper bag.

UK study shows reusable bags consumes so much energy to produce they must be used 131 times to break even on energy. And that doesn't cost the energy needed to wash and dry the bags after each use. If not done, they become bacteria havens. And the soap to wash them comes in plastic bottles!
Like masks, banning plastic bags and cups are about fear and control

During his campaign for governor, Murphy said that he wanted to make New Jersey like California. He's well on his way to doing that. This state went for Biden with 60% of the vote and my usually Republican district reelected a Democrat for a second term. He got 56% of the vote. Spartacus got nearly 60% statewide. NJ started getting infected with Democrats when people from New York and Philly moved here after the war, and now more refugees are coming as they flee NYC. No mention is made about the plastic bags that newspapers are delivered in. Those are the only bags left for dog owners to use to pick up the dogs' poop. And we recycle those plastic bags, so what is the problem? Jeff Tittel of the Sierra Club is behind most of this and is a pure econut. I'll bet he goes around in a polluting SUV!

This is meaningless moral signalling. We still have plastic containers and wrappings for lucheon meat, cheese, bread, milk, soft drinks and many other food items. Also made from oil: my car's interior, my laptop's exterior, my car tires, my athletic shoes, my polyester clothing.....The Green New Deal is an idiot's pipe dream. The vast majority of plastic pollution in the ocean and comes from China and SE Asia....not the US.

In CA they did that as well. Now we have plastic bags that cost 10 cents each and they are many times thinner and heavier than the old thin ones. It hasn't done anything except enrich the plastic bag makers and stores that sell them for a dime. I am sure the stores' cost is 1 cent apiece if that so do the math. They are still made from petroleum and still go into landfills and all that. So well-intentioned as it is, it is still a lame idea. Had enough yet NJ? Well, you voted for Joe, so get ready because this ain't nuttin'.

As others posted, we save ours for multiple uses. Onion peelings will stink up your kitchen if you just toss them in the garbage so I put stuff like that in one of the bags and knot it. There is one in my car for trash, they make good dog poop sacks...they are great for all sorts of things and they are cheap for the grocery store and help keep prices lower. With all due respect to any L-dotter friends who live in NJ, I think I would rather live in a trailer in Alabama than live there. My late aunt lived in Montclair. When her husband died she moved back here to Georgia, bought a house and was floored when she found out her property taxes were one third of what they were in Montclair. I once met a corporate headhunter on a flight into NJ. She said they had to offer twice the salary to get an executive to even consider moving to places like Newark.

If Joe bans fracking and drilling you won't find plastic bags.

Its time for South Jersey to become a separate state. We have very few things in common with New York minded North Jersey except our money that they take and keep.

He recommends using cloth grocery bags, how about he makes the same recommendation for using cloth diapers. I am sick and tired of pulling into a parking space and finding a dirty diaper when I step out of my car. These disposable diapers wind up in a land fill and they do not disintegrate.
