Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says that Democrats will not supply a quorum with which to advance the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Schumer defended this move, saying that Barrett’s nomination is “illegitimate, dangerous and unpopular.” There’s no point debating Schumer on these partisan claims. The question is whether the Democrats can block Barrett’s nomination through this ploy.I don’t think they can. A quorum in the full Senate is 51 members. In the Judiciary Committee it’s nine members including two from the minority party.

Turtle McConnell may have a lot of faults, one of which is accepting the "Paul Ryan Playbook on How to Keep Your Chamber Republican in 2018," because it sure looks like he's using it in the Senate in 2020.
But give the devil his due on this one, he knows the Senate rules inside and out and this is going to work out well for the President, GOP, soon-to-be-Justice-Barrett, and America. Not so will for Crazie Mazie, Chuckie Schumer and their pals.

Nice try, Chuckie, but, boycotting the process won't work well for you either.

It is simply STUNNING how Schumer and the rest of the Dems are willing to destroy America just to regain their power. It's almost as if they don't care about We, The People, but only about themselves. I'm being sarcastic-of course they don't care about us. Does Pelosi care about the homeless in the streets of San Fran when she can eat $16 a pint of Jeni's ice cream...in her twin SubZero fridges, worth $24,000. God, please let the Republicans smash the Democrats in EVERY RACE this November. We'll then deal with the Republican traitor RINOs next.

At the end of the article the author says that a party trying to block the confirmation of a judge or justice by boycott would be "a sorry spectacle." The Democrats are getting very good at being sorry spectacles.

Too easy. Walk the republican committee members into whatever snakehole the democrats are hiding in, gavel the committee to order, count the yes votes, gavel the meeting out of session and walk out.

how? presumably out of the 51+ senators in favor they can get 51 to be present. my understanding is that is a quorum.

My neighbor, a retired Teacher and Democrat, loved Amy Comy Barret. She said she watched all of the Confirmation Hearings and she was so impressed with her! I don't think my Neighbor would be at all impressed with Slimy Chuck Schumer's latest threat. What a Guy! Threatening to kick this woman to the curb, like a BULLY! Nope! Chuckie, you are just confirming what a nasty guy you are! The fact that this confirmation WILL go forward, because the Votes are there to do it, would stop any DECENT person from doing dirty tricks just because they can, not because it would change the outcome! But then, we all know Schumer could never be mistaken for a Decent person!

Why do blue states even elect senators or representatives, if they're going to vote exactly like schmuck and nasty tell them to vote. Those 2 reprobates are, in essence, trying to run the country. Unfortunately, they're doing a pretty good job at it, from what I see.

@caveman...for the Senate 51 is a quorum. But for the Judiciary Committee a quorum requires 9 of which 2 are Democrats. There's a way around it... which presumably Mitch the Turtle knows. Bottom line: the nomination should go forward to a vote.
And something needs to be done about that RINO Sasse.

A meaningless exercise. The Judiciary Committee quorum requires only 2 Democrats. They have been there all along for the hearings. They can’t very well boycott the vote on the committee’s recommendation to the Senate….which is just a recommendation. In the past they have been for or against or no recommendation at all. The Senate and only the Senate votes on the nominee and we have a quorum there. It only takes 51 members.

I am surprised they didn't object because her last name is the same as that devastating .50 cal rifle. Of course that would require one rat to know something about firearms beyond the 'you can't have any and I need lots of bodyguards with a lot of guns.'

If tDemocrats block a quorum on Judiciary Committee, will the unconventional maneuvers needed to push this through give Mitt Romney a "principled" excuse to defect and kill the nomination?
I suspect and fear Romney's been waiting for just such a chance.

Will they slip out of town, as they've done in the past to attempt to gum up the political works? https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/wisconsin-democrats-get-bus-flee-state-daniel-foster/ But I see the Republicans have also used a version of this tactic, and Oregon's governor didn't think turnabout was fair play. https://legalinsurrection.com/2019/06/oregons-republican-state-senators-flee-capitol-to-protest-climate-change-vote/

For Republicans, politics is part of life, but not the whole. For Democrats, increasingly of the far Left totalitarian mentality, politics IS life.

S---head Schumer knows damn well the nomination of Barrett is not illegitimate, dangerous, or unpopular, but since he's an arsewipe from the hate America party, he has to use words that are just the opposite of what Barrett's nomination is.

The politicians who call themselves "Democrats" hate democracy. When they win an election, they over-reach. When they lose an election, as in 2016, they call it "illegitimate, dangerous, and unpopular." So of course they are betraying their oath of office and sabotaging the work of the U.S. Senate.
So I don't call Democrats by their chosen name. Neither do I call them Liberals, because they are the most illiberal persons in our fair-minded country. Nor do I call them Progressives, because they are reactionary and regressive to the core of their being. I call them Leftist Fascists because today's Democrats and their black hooded street militia would make Mussolini blush with pride.

I’ve heard Lindsey Graham say he voted for the two women sitting on the Court right now. He didn’t agree with their philosophy, but he thought they were competent to be on the Court. That is what a senator should do. Too bad Schumer and the other dolts on the committee aren’t going to do that. It’s shameful what they’re doing to one of the most competent persons to ever sit on the Supreme Court. I hope most Americans see how callous they are.

No hearigs necessary. Proceed immediately to a vote. McConnell and Graham knew this was going to happen. They could have spared the nation an ugly display of bigotry and hate from Democrats.
