When Navy Pier opened as a re-imagined tourist attraction in 1995, it was a white elephant project 50 years stalled. Several mayors and many City Hall department heads had tried but failed to make retail use of the half-mile jut into Lake Michigan. When Navy Pier finally opened, its face-lift was behind schedule and over budget. Of course it was.
Love or despise its current personality — the gaudy signage, pricey thingamajigs, perpetual wafts of roasted nuts — Navy Pier is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Midwest and Chicago’s top attraction. Families flock to the pier for shopping and dining,

When you come to believe that the dim politicians will not protect its citizens and will in fact throw their support to the mob, it’s quite a different thing than enduring an economic slowdown.
The sad part is that the people who leave will keep the same politics not having the perception to see the connection between the conditions and the politics. They’ll doom us all.

Cities are much like living bodies. They are either healthy and growing or they are taken over by disease and decay. The older Eastern and Midwestern cities were in trouble long before the pandemic hit. The opportunities for robust growth were strangled by regulations, taxes, and mismanagement that accumulated over time to protect the empowered "status quo".
Its the problem young Vito Corleone encountered when he was just robbing houses. He was met with Don Finucci the neighborhood "capo" who had the muscle to demand a cut from the small time crooks just to "wet his beak". Young Vito decided his business plans for growth were not compatible with Don Finucci's beak and he assassinated him. Until a new generation of visionaries are able to replace the old "dons" with a more growth friendly environment that is not dependent on the obsolete centralized city model of the last century then the decay in Chicago and all the other "Don Finucci" politically run cities will continue.

This is a direct result of what happens when you vote for someone based on skin tone and what they do in the privacy of their bedroom instead of someone with experience and knowledge of how of law and order and how a big city works. Chicago wanted to elect the "first black lesbian mayor," inexperienced or not. Congratulations. You got her. Enjoy the suck!!

The people of Chicago get what they have elected for the past fifty or so years. The mayors, now and in the past, have been incompetent and unable, or unwilling, to confront and try to solve the problems of the city. Elections have consequences people, you get what you vote for.

FTA: Chicago, like its big-city counterparts across the country, is in survival mode, whacked by the coronavirus pandemic, looting and protesting that damaged hundreds of properties, and a deep sense of insecurity over safety.
Even the lakefront liberals who have supported Dems for decades know there's no hope for this city.

If the democrats are in charge, the simple answer is no. Wherever they rule, they destroy.

It won't be coming back. Once people get the perception that an area is no longer safe they will never come back. Even decent black people can see how feral and out of control the BLM bunch are and they are getting out too.

I drive through a part of downtown Chicago on my way to Grand Rapids in August ‘71. I didn’t like the look and feel of the place. It had a threatening vibe. I never went back to visit.

Long story. My husband did his internship at Pres St. Luke’s in 1969. Our first child, our son was born there in 1969. It was a difficult year and we couldn’t wait to get out. However there is a big radiology meeting there (or was), so my husband and I went. Time and a little more money made a difference and we enjoyed it. So we began taking the kids out of school every year to go. We decided they could learn more from the museums, art galleries etc than in school. An aside, given all the Shiite coming out from kids today, I don’t think we were wrong! Anyway, Chicago has always had a very special place in our hearts as a family. Time obviously has had an effect on our trips to Chicago, but we will not be going back. The danger is not something we are interested in seeing close up.
In response to poster #10, yes, wherever dims rule they destroy is correct. That is because whenever they gain office, their object is not like that of Donald Trump, make ______________ great again, it is to make ME richer! That can’t be done and help the local area. So we need to remember that when expecting Lori Lightfoot, or any other dim to help their local area. So to all who put Democrats in office and expect anything in return, grow up. It isn’t going to happen.

When urban dwellers break out of the cities, and move to the suburbs or countryside, they are shocked at the freedom and safety they suddenly have! Who knew life could be so good?

The Blue cities suffer because all of dem would rather crash into the mountain than see Trump re-elected.
The smart people are moving out.

I have a feeling that none of the big leftist cities will survive. Who wants to live in them? Who wants to open or own a business in them? Who wants to risk their family’s lives in them? Who can afford to live in them?
