Madison Brengle seems to be enjoying her US Open bubble experience. Brengle ran into the stands to crack a bottle of wine on Wednesday night after her 6-2, 6-3 upset of No. 19 seed Dayana Yastremska in the second round of the US Open. According to tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg, Brengle was greeted by fellow competitor Arina Rodionova with a mini-bottle of Sutter Home. Brengle, 30, promptly shouted, “Alcohol!” and hustled into the stands after seeing her prize. Brengle defeated the Australian Rodionova in the first round of the event. The veteran will now face fellow American Shelby Rogers in the third round on Friday.

A California district attorney is requiring her prosecutors to consider looters’ “needs” when weighing criminal charges against them. The new mandate, set forth by Contra Costa District Attorney Diane Becton, makes it tougher to prosecute looting cases in the county, which sits just outside San Francisco. Investigators must now consider “was this theft offense substantially motivated by the state of emergency, or simply a theft offense which occurred contemporaneously to the declared state of emergency?” according to the policy reported by local outlet East County Today. In making that determination, they must also consider five other factors, including “was the theft committed for financial gain or personal need?”

Chicago faces a 2021 budget deficit of $1.2 billion as the coronavirus pandemic decimates the city’s revenue with businesses shut down due to social distancing while recent unrest hurt reopening efforts. Next year’s projected gap comes on top of a 2020 deficit of nearly $800 million for its corporate fund, which accounts for many of the services the city provides, (Snip) Lightfoot’s administration will likely need to cut headcount, control spending, refinance debt, borrow and ask for more federal aid. The city has not ruled out raising property taxes and is also looking at a personal property levy on computer leases, which may help raise money as telework expands.

I am a member of a community of Catholics that has thought for months on whether to reopen our diocese schools this fall. As with any decision that relates to health and safety during the pandemic, it was not an easy one. But in the end, the diocese chose the path that was true to its purpose: The church exists to serve the community and minister to its needs. We do this in many ways. We operate institutions of healing — there are roughly 600 church-sponsored hospitals nationwide and 1,400 long-term care facilities. And during this pandemic, they have sought to save lives. We also operate 7,500 schools for 2.3 million students.

The NBA playoffs inside the Orlando bubble averaged 1.875 million viewers for the first week, down 20 percent from last season, per data from RealGM and ShowBuzz Daily. Industry insiders mostly chalk up the decline in viewership to the abnormal season, with games being played in August and often during the daytime hours, when television viewership is generally down across the board. That said, SportsBusiness Daily reported in February that ratings for regular-season games had declined by 12 percent since the end of the 2018-19 season. Northwestern University’s campus in Evanston is going to feel less crowded this fall, with residence hall capacity reduced to about 70% and more than half of all employees still working from home, school officials said Tuesday. But those estimates didn’t fully assuage concerns from residents that students will instead move into neighborhood apartments and throw raucous parties, potentially accelerating the spread of COVID-19 in a suburb that has so far avoided an uncontrollable outbreak. Residents raised the issue Tuesday evening during a 90-minute Zoom meeting, billed as a “community town hall,” to discuss NU’s plan for repopulating its suburban campus when classes begin next month.
