In a piece originally titled “There’s A Sinister Reason Coloring Books Are So Popular In Quarantine,” a professor who teaches the history of art, ideas, and technology at Stanford University and also writes for The Guardian and Vogue posits a unique take: “What if the recent popularity of coloring books comes not from the creativity they purportedly inspire, but from the submission they induce?”
In the piece, later retitled “The Dark, Forgotten History of Coloring Books,” Emanuele Lugli asserts, “This, after all, has been their mission from the start. It may be lost to the fans of coloring books that their success peaked in the 19th century,

Even my prog to the max boss LOVES coloring books. I never liked them, but children and grandchildren did. Leave it to an academic to take the joy out of every single thing.

Please, wypipo...refer to them correctly. They aren't "coloring books." They are "books of color."

Well, professor, stop coloring those books. That will show those gremlins that are trying to make you submissive.

I never gave my kids coloring books.. or rarely.. blank pages and crayons markers color pencils paint to create!
However, the prisms and intricate coloring books for older students and adults.. therapy! Calms the mind, soothes and quiets...
If we re label coloring books as Art Therapy- I sure wonky liberal prof would be mollified..

All of those years in musty classrooms and all he could get was a degree in art? No wonder he is angry. He should have stayed with basket weaving.

I really just want to get theses nuts in a room and scream “WHO CARES?!” Take the time you wasted on the drivel and teach a kid to read or fix the gutter on an elderly person’s house.

Oh Emanuele, you're so blinded by your liberal bias that you can't see goobernment ordered mask, socialist distancing and confindment to home are a Hades of a lot better at causing the citizens to submit to the will of the goobernment than coloring books. Blaming coloring books for submission to the goobernment is like blaming flatulence for global warming.

And by extension, everybody should discard their 'submission' coloring books and submit to the Leftist's psycho-babbling expertise... Yeah, right.

I object to what this moron said. I colored for 15 years and loved it. I always wanted to be able to draw and never got past kindergarten skills. But when I have a pretty line drawn picture in front of me and about 500 color pencils in the basket, I love it. If the picture comes out nice, I love it even more. Harmless fun and I finally learned to see shades of color that for 50 years I called red, blue, green, yellow. Now it's sage, teal, carmine, etc.

When coloring books for adult kids came out, I was in the ER waiting room sitting near a young woman with a coloring book. She seemed possessed. I assure you she wasn't relaxed and there was no fun going on.
