Get ready to scream for ice cream—with a brand-new song. RZA, of the Wu-Tang Clan, has partnered with Good Humor to write a cheerful new ice cream truck jingle in place of “Turkey in the Straw”—an earworm with a troubled history long criticized for being racist. “Remember that ice cream jingle?” the rap legend, 51, said while introducing his new song. “Of course—we all know it. I’m not gonna play it right now because we come to find out that it has racist roots.(Snip) In 2014, NPR documented the history of the tune, which was used in racist minstrel

Not one in 100,000 people thought of racist alternative lyrics or minstrel shows from the 1800s when hearing Turkey in the Straw. Good Bye Good Humor.

Paint every truck black and play any HIP HOP song that glorifies cop killing and big butts.

It's from 2014, but it's a good response to the stupidity of the NPR story (but I'm redundant) that started all of this.

Day-yam! I loved hearing that song from the Good Humor ice cream truck! Being just a 50’s kid, I had no clue of the vile racism of that music. I now hang my head in deep shame. (Not really)

Re #4. My ringtone is “Dixie”. It turns a few heads but they can kiss my rebel patoot if they are offended. It’s a beautiful tune that was written by a Yankee. I am an ancient old coot and really don’t give a damn what other people think anymore.

I read the lyrics, as a fan of old folk/Americana I saw *nothing * racist. What is wrong with these people? Are they just making things up? I assume they forgot all about the Irish slaves and other indentured servants.

I don't see the problem. Locally, the ice cream truck drivers don't seem to understand English and play seasonal songs on the wrong season.
Lawd have mercy. There is a racist under every rock. The only solution is to pack up and move to Liberia or South Africa.

I wonder what it’s like to spend every minute of every day seeking to be offended by something. Leftists are completely miserable - I’ve never met a happy one. Have you?

Other than the dialect, which sounds Southern to me: how is this possibly racist?
As I was a-goin'
On down the road
With a tired team
And a heavy load
I cracked my whip
And the leader sprung
I says day-day
To the wagon tongue
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll 'em up and twist 'em up
A high tuck a-haw
And hit 'em up a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
Went out to milk
And I didn't know how
I milked the goat
Instead of the cow
A monkey sittin'
On a pile of straw
A winkin' at
His mother-in-law
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll 'em up and twist 'em up
A high tuck a-haw
And hit 'em up a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
I came to the river
And I couldn't get across
So I paid five dollars
For a big bay hoss
Well, he wouldn't go ahead
And he wouldn't stand still
So he went up and down
Like an old saw mill
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll 'em up and twist 'em up
A high tuck a-haw
And hit 'em up a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
Did you ever go fishin'
On a warm summer day
When all the fish
Were swimmin' in the bay
With their hands in their pockets
And their pockets in their pants
Did you ever see a fishie
Do the Hootchy-Kootchy Dance?
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll 'em up and twist 'em up
A high tuck a-haw
And hit 'em up a tune called
Turkey in the Straw

Is this the racist, minstrel show version of which they speak???
I went down to Sandy Hook the other afternoon

And the first person I met there was Old Zip Coon.
Old Zip Coon is a very fine scholar.

And he plays upon his banjo "Coonie in the Holler."
This version was in our school folk song book in Florida in the 1950s along with Old Folks at Home and Fooba Wooba John.

So much for humor, good or otherwise.
The funny thing is that 100 years from now rap will be considered racist and the minstrel show of our times.

Thanks, #12, nothing even slightly racist about those lyrics.
And if some puke took a popular song and wrote different lyrics....SO WHAT? That doesn't permanently smear a fine, harmless song.
Racist blacks are really insane. Literally.

We were in a Tijuana bar in early 1958 when the emcee told the sparse audience that Lt. Buddy Knox was in the house and asked Knox to come to the stage and sing "Party Doll". Knox graciously loped up to the front of the band, spoke a few words with them and then grabbed a mike. All these years later, we smile to remember Knox belting out his gold record song while the clueless Mexican band played "Turkey in the Straw" behind him.

Hah! For #18, I was getting ready to play at a pre boda in Hermosillo many years ago and one of the groupies was doing a Mic check, exhorting (in a most serious tone of voice) for all the women to take their black panties off. I guess you had to be a gringo to find the humor.

So he's writing a rap jingle full of hos, pimps, the "n" word and f bombs?

Ice cream trucks are usually white, they sell vanilla ice cream, and they probably don't even accept EBT. What could be more racist than that? Meanwhile, slaves were imported on ships that flew Old Glory; how long before our flag and national anthem become "problematic," like the so-called white supremacist Betsy Ross flag?
