Soot darkens the letters on the sign for 7 Mile Fashion, months after rioters torched the Lake Street shopping center where it stands.
The store that thrived for 24 years is now a mass of debris. The buildings on either side are boarded, the ruins cordoned off by a chain-link fence.
The Ahn family that owns 7 Mile Fashion estimates they lost $2.5 million here and at two other stores attacked on Nicollet Avenue and W. Broadway. Yet insurance will cover just $600,000 because they had not updated their policy in many years.(Snip) More than half of 421 small businesses applying

I wonder what the Red Star will say when property insurance becomes totally unavailable? What will they say when the stampede of business out of Minneapolis due to lack of insurance becomes unstoppable? What will they say when the loss of business decimates tax revenue? Just saying....

It won't matter if they rebuild. The people that can flee will, and you downtown will be decimated for the next 50 years. See "Detroit 1967 race riots".

PS When will the insurance companies sue the organizations known to have started this. BLM, Antifa and others with names. That might give them a sense that riots are not a good idea. Even Alinsky said that tactics that drag on too long become a drag. How about a $$$$$$$$$$ drag...

I would bet that most of the small businesses have coverage that excludes damage from 'civil unrest'. So, as the mayor was saying 'insurance will cover it' his ignorance and unwillingness to deploy police assets to shut down the riots and limit the damage will cost his city many small businesses that simply cannot recover.

There is big difference between ignorant and stupid. ANYONE still defending rats for any political or judicial office is ignorant. They might be leaders in their field of expertise, they might have a successful personal life and one would think they are smart as a result of all that. The problem is they embrace the brainwash. Either from lifelong habits handed down by family and friends or by feeding the envious, vicious, emotional beast within them that is stoked 24/7 by a lying 'news' media and a sarcastic, snarky, hate filled entertainment industry. They either never read 1984 or they can't connect the obvious dots between the warning fiction and today's reality. Same with all objective world history since WWI. THESE fools are the cause of all this destruction. Their constant support of filthy rats put the current urban 'leadership' in charge. Without these criminal leaders, anarchist and the mob of violent losers would never have been able to move beyond a broken window or two. You want to see the real danger to western civilization, look within your family or neighbors who seem to be functioning adults, but are emotionally damaged children when it comes to civics, history or the future.

They say the so-called ignorant “peaceful protestors” who were goaded into perpetrating the rioting, burning out businesses, and looting were home grown residents of Minneapolis and were conducting those criminal activities under the auspices and direction of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement that is a Marxist political organization.
The right thing for the affected commercial insurance companies to do is for them to band together, in that they have the first class legal representation readily available, and to sue the BLM movement organization that is said to have deep pockets these days, on behalf of their business clients, to recover all the loses from the rioting.
If the insurance companies simply accept the loses, you can bet that in the future those insurance companies will effectively “red line” the areas where the rioting occurred by claiming that the future risk is too great for them to offer business insurance there for businesses that decide to rebuild or for new businesses.
When I entered the Army over 60 years ago one of the first things that I learned was the you never crap in your mess kit. Obviously the so-called “peaceful protestors” in Minneapolis were never taught that, so they simply destroyed the vital businesses like drug stores and grocery stores that served their “communities” that had nothing to do with the stated genesis for their protesting and rioting.
I’m sure that the leftist and liberal Democrats who have run that city for decades will have no problem raiding up the city taxes to as they will say repair the damage, but in reality much of those increased tax monies will end up in Democrat political coffers and in the pockets of Democrat political supporters. It’s up to the local electorate there to get rid of those incompetent Democrat politicians.

#1, never be underinsured.
#2 Insurance will be so prohibitively expensive in these areas even if they somehow miraculously rebuild, they won't be able to afford the insurance to be adequately covered.
As has been said, those with the means to flee, will flee. That goes for families and companies.

This is how cities are ruined by leftists. They continue to decay, businesses won't invest, middle class and wealthy move out and the spiraling occurs. The politicians blame Trump and anyone they can find. They have no skin in the game and still receive fat pensions and keep their campaign money from the corporations. You're an idiot to vote for the Dems this year. We'll see how smart Minnesotans are in November, won't we?

Surprised the insurance companies are giving them anything. All of the damage was self inflicted, a suicide. Like Portland, the leaders who the people voted into office allowed the riots to start and become violent. Its sad but when you're a brain dead democratic zombie this is what you get. Stupid has consequences. Got it.

Even if they get insurance payments, what moron would rebuild in an area prone to riots and with local and state government that does nothing to protect property. This happens over and over, that areas having undergone a riot become economic dead zones, places where cabs won't go.

The governments that sided with the rioters will accuse insurance companies of redlining, and compel them to write “affordable” policies in Bde Sbip B’du or else lose their licenses to do other business statewide. The insurers will then spread the costs out to everyone else, in the usual way. We’re supposed to say this is a free market.

The Strib ran an article yesterday about how there is a shortage of lake homes for sale that are 2-4 hours north of the Twin Cities. It seems that those who can, are looking for a place away from the Twin Cities but still close enough to return to, if necessary. One requirement of the lake home is that it has strong internet so they can work from home. The article stated that many who are seeking these lake homes intend to keep their Twin City home, but just don't want to spend much time there anymore. My guess is that it's a seller's market when it comes to lake homes, but a buyer's market in the Twin Cities.

The businesses may come back but I assure you the insurance companies will not. Now people who have deliberately underinsured themselves or gone entirely without are asking for tax payers to bail them out and demonizing the insurance companies. An insurance policy is a legal contract between two willing partners. It is what it is and both parties have to adhere to the terms of the contract. Any attempt by the state to abrogate those contracts will convince the companies to give up their licenses In Minnesota completely. It’s not worth it to be forced to lose money at the whim of communist mayors or governors. I have seen this before In California. If it becomes untenable to make a profit because of political grandstanding then the companies say to hell with it and leave.

Nobody likes insurance until they want a check for damages. Not sure I am buying their excuses unless MN is too stupid to require higher amounts. Locally, a friend who had a tiny storefront, said she was required to have a million in liability insurance to rent the space. When the insurer doesn't pay, they will look to the state. The state will start whining for federal money. Our money.
There are a lot of insurance companies with their HQ in MN. Guess they will be moving out too. Remember when the bridge collapsed ? This is strike two.
Good time to check your insurance policies. Go to "limitations and exclusions" first.
