No other group has shown as much contempt for its own work during the coronavirus crisis as teachers.
Their unions are actively fighting to keep kids out of the classroom and also to limit remote instruction, lest it require too much time and attention from people who are supposed to be wholly devoted to educating our children.
This has been a wrenching time in the U.S. labor market, with tens of millions thrown out of work. It’s been an inspiring time. Workers we never would have thought of as essential before — grocery-store employees, delivery guys, meat-packing workers — have kept absolutely necessary parts of the economy operating

Time to start firing the ones that won't work and hire new young teachers with the understanding that if they don't come to work, they too are out of a job.

Yes, and they will be ready to go back to work November 4 - if they get what they want - which is Trump gone.

Richie Rich just CAN'T pass up a chance to smear our president. Little Dick could have enlightened readers with information about how it is that anyone gets paid for not working-but no, he just wanted to see his name in print, again.

Make no mistake. The Teachers Unions have killed more young black men than the Police.

Teachers as a whole are the biggest bunch of whining, complaining spoiled brats ever. Now, they have discovered that they can sit at home and work less and still get paid the same. If schools don’t reopen this fall, demand your tax money back. Go to school board meetings, township meetings and raise hell. Two thirds of your property tax bill is for schools. They don’t deserve to get paid. Many years ago a teacher friend of mine told me the best thing about being a teacher is June, July and August. That says it all.

I love how Rich just has to trash Trump a couple of times to "qualify" his piece.

you people should separate out college teachers from public school elementary and high school teachers.
college teachers know that their jobs, and colleges, might be eliminated because of Kung Flu. therefore, college teachers are making requests on controlling Kung Flu, not tryi9ng to shut down their employers.public school elementary and secondary teachers know that their public schools will not get eliminated, and their unions can make outrageous demands, secure in that fact. And the teacher union leaders have the separate agenda of knocking DJT out of office.
finally, some of the public school elementary andf secondary teachers know that their product is inferior. therefore, opeining schools doesn't seem important.

Unions in general are a scam, on both their members and the rest of the population. A small number of “leaders” profit mightily, while the rest are fleeced, convinced they are being “helped”.

Teachers unions have not been on our popularity list for decades and the current generation of ignorant brats is living proof of their failures. Teachers consider themselves to be valuable professionals yet they need the protection of a democrat-cozy union to maintain their working conditions. This situation calls for nothing less than outlawing the unions, firing of all teachers who refuse to work and the cesation of paychecks that come directly out of the taxpayers pockets but yield no benefit to them or their children. Enough of this state-sanctioned robbery. Enough of the liberal takeover of education.

Every year, our local small town paper shows us the 'teacher of the year', as does my American Legion post. Every year, I question why no other work discipline is honored. I'm always told, are teachers are not like 'big' city teachers. Yet, we are now looking at a 2 days in class, 2 days on line school and a 3 day weekend. When kids graduate after 13 years (pre-K thru 12) and can't read at an 8th grade level, less time in the classroom is not the answer. My grandchildren tell me that most of the teachers collected previous days homework at the start of class and assign the following days home work. Then the students have the rest of the class to do that assignment. When I was a student in the late 50's and early 60's, the teacher was in front of the class or at the blackboard, actually teaching. I imagine you'd be hard pressed to find a teacher like that today. Every year, we get an automatic millage increase, for education. I won't be holding my breath waiting for a reduction this year. Schools are the first 'non-essential' places shut down at the threat of inclement weather, and you can then find teachers and students at the biggest shelter in our Parish, the big box store. Sorry for the rant, but property taxes are too high and they say they want more, to 'build' better schools, while they have millions in the bank. Strangely enough, teacher salaries go up whenever they get the new money. Plus, books and a list of supplies as long as your arm are required to be purchased by the parent, unless you're designated as one of the 'poor!'

Certainly agree with the premise of this poorly written article. As an anti-Trumpet, Rich Lowry repeatedly doubles back and trips over his own “prose”.

The teachers unions are just like you, Richie. Be you; you'll either like or hate yourself better; the squishy middle just doesn't fit.

As a former principal of mine once said just because you went to school, that doesn’t make you an expert. How many of you have actually been in a school lately? When kids are finally back in school, I urge you to go and volunteer. You’ll see dedicated teachers doing their jobs and caring about the students. I am a retired elementary schoolteacher and most of my fellow teachers were conservative and hated the union, so we opted out of the union. Two of my daughters are elementary teachers and have been raring to get back to school with the kids in attendance, but have to wait for permission thanks to our elected leaders and the media scaring too many people during this pandemic. They have worked from home trying to reach as many of their students as they could. They have been tied to their computers and phones every single school day with a 30 minute lunchtime like they had before the shutdown. Neither one belongs to the union, are conservative, and will be voting for President Trump. Most of their teacher friends feel the same way. They hate hearing the union jerks spouting their nonsense, but that’s the media giving them the microphone.
