Epic Systems is requiring its 9,000-plus employees to return to work in person at its sprawling campus outside of Madison (WI) by Sept. 21.
The health software company is one of the first large employers in the state to no longer give employees the choice of working from home. Epic workers decried the order Tuesday, saying company CEO Judy Faulkner was ignoring public health advice.

EPIC IS A NIGHTMARE. It's a glorified cash register. The "electronic health record" is a patched over joke that makes doctors and nurses stare into a box rather than engage with their patients. It's the worst thing that ever happened to health care.

Poor babies. They prefer to pretend to work at home while out shopping, golfing, vacationing.

Maybe it is the nightmare of in the medical field, but at least this company is getting their people back to work and saying enough is enough. You either come back or find other employment. If a majority of the companies start to do that, maybe we get back to somewhat normal times again.

Notice the article says, "Epic workers" but doesn't specify how many. May have been two for all we know.

That company is Fantastic....the campus is eco-friendly, a dream job for programmers, what do they have on their campus 25 office buildings?? All PRIVATELY owned, If I was a young programmer graduating college this would be tops in my list, vs Kalifornia w the nastiness and deceit out there.

I guess my thought is, if you don't like the Job requirements, find another job! I would suspect EPIC has the right to fire those workers and replace them. That's the way it's always been and will always be! Same with Teachers. If they don't want to go back to work because they're '"afraid", then resign. There are always Young Teachers looking for a job! It's time go get back to normal! Yes, it's great working from home, you can sleep in, wear Sweats, run errands during the day and generally enjoy life. Nobody WANTS to go to work every day, but most of us didn't have a choice, so we sucked it up and went! These people should do the same!

Quit if you don’t want to work in person. I do not understand why they are any different from the grocery store stockers? They are deemed essential workers supportIng the medical community, aren't they?

So resign and give up your unemployment check. It's all rather simple.
Most healthcare and medical insurance software companies are in the same boat, shaken up by the ravages of Obamacare, the challenges of forced diversity, the communication with offshore and contract programmers and the many government regulations that hamper the development of software. Working from home does not work for many people because it takes a little discipline that many millenials simply do not have. They have a hard enough time being productive in an office or cubicle. Computer programming requires a good balance between working with the user community and quiet, uninterrupted time for programming, something which many in management do not understand.

There's a huge investment in that campus...and it needs to show some return. Imagine the overhead that would be eliminated if EPIC found it wasn't needed, that the work flows just fine from employees' home offices. Once the wire goes into the wall, it really doesn't matter where it comes out.
