Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green has died. He was 73. According to a family statement released on Saturday, the English singer-guitarist died in his sleep. "It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep," the statement reads. The London-based law firm Swan Turton Solicitors said a further statement will be provided in the coming days. The blues rock guitarist formed Fleetwood Mac with drummer Mick Fleetwood in 1967. Green, to some listeners, was the best of the British blues guitarists of the 1960s. B.B. King once said Green “has the sweetest tone I ever heard.
On the Mount Rushmore of blues/rock guitarists. RIP

Some guitarists achieve fame. And for some of those, it's well-deserved.
Other guitarists who are deserving of fame go through life relatively unnoticed. Peter Green is DEFINITELY one of those. I admired his work in both the early Fleetwood Mac and prior to that with John Mayall. The evidence would suggest that his career was derailed by consciousness-altering chemicals... it's a fine line between genius and insanity.
Condolences to his family and friends. I'll miss him.

Hallucinogens did a major number on all of the original three guitar players in that band.

I can't help it 'bout the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to
When I talked to God I knew he'd understand
He said, "Stick by Me, I'll be your guiding hand.
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to."
R.I.P. Peter Green

Kudos to all the music fans above.
Peter Alan Greenbaum aka Peter Green played guitar (and bass*) and sang with such passion and focused emotion that he knew it wouldn't last very long--he would burn out. No wire has a filament that strong. The psychedelics given to Peter, a schizophrenic, and his talented bandmate Danny Kirwan, a paranoid schizophrenic, in Germany in early 1970 brought everything to a head, and Peter quit the band in May 1970. As the rest of his bandmates knew, Peter was irreplaceable. Fleetwood Mac would never be the same.
The next year FM was in America on tour with Kirwan heading up the band--many of us fans loved FM with Kirwan--and guitarist Jeremy Spencer suddenly quit the band, throwing things into confusion. They couldn't complete their tour. After a hasty meeting, they made an emergency call to London. "Peter! Help!" Peter picked up his 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard with the upside down top humbucker and the reversed magnet and flew to his mates' aid. He completed the tour with his old band, culminating in a date at Fillmore East in NYC in which the band played a four hour version of Peter's "Black Magic Woman"--sadly, a recording wasn't made--in which Peter played with genius, never repeating himself or playing hackneyed notes. Gosh, to have been there!
May the Lord bless Peter. He had a lot of gifts that he shared with us. B.B. King said Peter was the only guitarist who gave him cold sweat. That's an ultimate compliment. I'd give up a few years of the life I have remaining to be able to play some of the things Peter played. He was a master. Music is life.
*Listen to the minutes long bass solo (w/ MickFleetwood's percussion) Peter appended to the long version of "The Green Manalishi" in the Boston Tea Party concerts of early 1970. Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie didn't play that style of bass.

Re #8: A bunch of uncomfortable stuff has happened, including (cervical) spinal fusion of (C) 4-5, 5-6, and 6-7. Wearing a hard Miami J collar that prevents 95% of head movement. The operation happened on August 31 afternoon, so I'm less than ten days out. (In 2018 I had two lumbar fusion operations.) For months I literally could not sit at my desk. Patience is necessary during this recovery. Glad to be back.
