Rhode Island's capital city is looking at providing reparations to residents of African and Native American heritage, Providence Mayor Jorge Elzorza announced Wednesday.
would examine the feasibility of providing reparations,
Elorza said it's the first step in accepting the city's role in the country's fraught racial history, including Black slavery and mistreatment of Native Americans.
"We're putting a marker on the ground and committing to elevating this conversation and using the levers at our disposal to correct the wrongs of the past," he said.
Eloza said two other cities in the country have taken similar steps to provide reparations, but haven't gone as far as what he is pushing Providence to do

A majority of the "people of color" in Providence are hispanic, primarily of Portuguese extraction.

Correction: A majority of the "people of color" in Providence used to be Hispanic and Portuguese extraction (I think Portuguese people may differ on the label 'people of color'. After this announcement, half the black population of Boston and Hartford will be moving to Providence very soon.

I guess now is the time to admit I'm 1/1024 African-American. My Grandfather 8 generations ago was a black and Grandmother 10 generations ago was a Native American. I'm blond with blue eyes but I want my double reparations.

Within 3 years, Providence will look like Detroit. Massive poverty caused by a massive influx of poor, uneducated, welfare-class people looking for "free stuff", combined with a massive outflow of businesses and middle-class and upper-class people escaping the rising crime and massive taxes that it will take to fund this.
Anybody with more than 6 active brain cells knows exactly where this is heading. But, of course, that leaves off all lie-berals -- especially lie-beral government officials -- since they all fall about 5 working brain cells short of that threshold!!!!!

This isn't reparations. None of these people to receive a wad of cash has been a slave. None of the native americans have been 'mistreated' as their ancesters. Hey, all the settlers native americans' ancesters raped, murder and took slaves, do white folks get reparations as well?

Here is the 1860 census population of Rhode Island:
rank state pop. free pop. slave slave percentage
29 Rhode Island 174,620 174,620 0 0
There's a nice graph of each state, and the territories, by rank, and includes slave population with the percentage of that state's total population.

Everyone is free to live wherever they wish in the country. Anyone who continues to live in the leftist and liberal Democrat cities had better be prepared big time to hand their cash to others who claim they have several hundred year old grievances. That’s how the Democrats intend to maintain their political power.

California assembly already approved reparations here....of all states too! About the only racism they can claim it for would be for housing redlining. But that affected Hispanics too. My dad got around it by saying his family was from Spain. The town we lived in didn't get rid of it until 1969. So, do I have to pay reparations or do I get reparations?? Just kidding....

I am Jewish. My people were slaves in Egypt thousands of years ago. Egypt is in Africa. I demand reparations from people of African descent -- with lots of accrued interest.

Yeah, I think it's absolutely everyone's right to live where they want to. If they choose to live in Providence, and are okay with paying reparations to people they don't know, that's fine with me! As long as THEY know the money comes out of THEIR pockets and THEIR Taxes! Nobody else in the country is responsible for THEIR decisions! Just so ya know!

I believe the U. S. has already paid reparations. It was 40 acres and a mule. If anyone can show that they were a slave in the United States they should be able to claim that.

#15, the P-Town you refer to is actually Provincetown, on the Cape. But the sentiment is really the same.
A New England anecdote. I have a friend who will soon inherit a two bedroom house on the water in CT. I asked her if she was prepared to assume the property tax burden and she excitedly exclaimed that the taxes were only six hundred dollars per year. Yay!
Knowing this was virtually impossible, I zillowed the house. The taxes are $28,000 a year.
Moral of the story, Democrats in New England are brain damaged which explains a lot.

Who died and made this buffo the King of Reparations? If it comes out of his pocket that's fine but I have a feeling that the people of Providence are going to object to participating in this feel-good gesture. How do people of today who never knew a slave know how much they are owed?
