Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory, the first African American archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, condemned President Trump's visit to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. He said the visit "violates our religious principles.""I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree,"
“The first African” bla bla bla...
Can I wish for the LAST African?
I think everyone would be better off.

So this faux archbishop (a made-up title) equates the Episcopal Church with the Roman Catholic Church? I went decades thinking they were only Catholics who forgot their Latin. Thanks for settling the issue for us Protestants. Now, look up what is a Metropolitan.

The President was only outside the church and was commiserating with the sadness of the church being burnt. There is nothing anti religious in that act. We want more action by the president against the hoodlums rioting and stealing from the hard working Americans.

#12 makes good points. POTUS stood outside of the church, he didn't demand to go inside, he didn't give a speech there, it was a silent demonstration of the evidence of mindless violence and barbarism.
Gregory and Budde said basically the same thing... why didn't THEY take the opportunity to preach peace and forgiveness and condemn the orgiastic violence spread across the country? They complain about a ...photo op? Bill Clinton used to trot around with a hollowed-out Bible to prove his contrition.
One wonders whether Gregory and Budde take the WHOLE counsel of YHWH? Do they pick and choose what to affirm or delicately omit?
Last point, as far as we know, the grounds are PUBLIC grounds. And as President, I'm sure if POTUS had wanted to enter the Church he could have gone in and made a much more dramatic presentation. He didn't.
Weary of the sanctimony and arrogance and false piety, not just of these people (at least what we can know of them today) but of Sasse and Pelosi, Biden and Obama, Clintons with their southern twang when preaching to the congregation of Democrat voters, etc ad nauseum.

This LeftWing/EuroCentrictCommie/DirtBag/POS (Priest) , like many in the Church's Upper Echelons, is a Pant-Load of Pure BS.
Sixty years ago I walked out of a Catholic Church one Sunday morning because of the Crap being Spewed by a Self-Centered Holier-Than-Thou CrapHead who was just like this Bum.
This guy and his Pope are proof that the Holy Trinity is not a Catholic.
I believe that I'm closer to God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit than this man.
He is a Left Wing Politician who has "Aspired to his Level of Incompetency".
Is there any wonder why the Catholic church's followers have dwindled severely during the last 50+ years in Western nations?
We look, we listen, we leave and only return in a casket!
To this day I still respect the Religion I was born into, its Fundamental Teachings and its Holy Sacraments, but I Despise its Leadership with its LeftWing/Socialist teachings and New Age Philosophies.
AND: This Pope is closer to Lucifer than to Jesus Christ.........

If St John’s Church had been there in his days as President, I think Thomas Jefferson, who was not noted for being especially religious, might have made a similar walk from the White House to stand in front of the church if arson of the same sacrilegious kind had been committed while he was in office.

Crusy Rusty (#27) said it well.
My story is nearly the same, except I walked away 'only' 45 years ago.
The people running the Catholic Church - the Pedophiles, the people who hid and moved the pedophiles, the Left-wing Activist Priests (remember the Berrigan Brothers?) blatantly Violate and stand Against the Beliefs and Values that I understand the Church has stood for, for 2,000 years.
They have destroyed any confidence, any 'faith' I have that they will do the right thing.
They have no 'moral high ground' on which to stand and berate any of the rest of us.
The Church cannot be destroyed from Without, as long as one good Priest teaches and one parishoner is there to learn, but
These 'leaders' are doing an effective job of destroying the Church from WITHIN.

I think the President's walk over to St John's Episcopal Church was great. He was directly telling the barbarians: STAY AWAY FROM OUR PLACES OF WORSHIP since a pack of thugs had set a fire in the Cathedral's basement.
I don't know what Archbishop Gregory is talking about anyway. Trump did not walk to St John Paul II Catholic Shrine. He walked over to St. John's Episcopal Church which is across the street from the White House. I have no idea where Pope John Paul II Shrine is located. Why doesn't Gregory get his facts straight before he starts haranguing the President. And even if he did go to a St. John Paul II Shrine Church, what business is it of his?
Did Archbishop Gregory have anything to say about the Secret Agreement the Vatican signed with the Communist Chinese which does nothing but persecute practicing Catholics in China? I am a practicing Catholic and we are so sick of the hypocrisy coming from many in the hierarchy of the Church. It is like Pope Francis being more concerned about the state of the environment than the state of people's souls.

The lefties are increasingly attacking Christian's and churches throughout the world right now, even in America where we have the very First Amendment to protect us. But Rights are being abused these days by some public officials who swear an oath to uphold the Constitution, thus, our Rights. That is bad enough, but when even a leader in a major denomination does not welcome and give thanks for a President who is a Christian willing & courageous enough to value, protect & defend Christian's & churches in the midst of such tumultuous times, such a church leader should keep his eyes upon Jesus and, like Him, welcome ALL who come to Christ instead of judging & condemning him.
We thank the Lord for this President and his faithful leadership according to the Constitution and the Bible.

Dummy Bishop. The St. John Paul II shrine is 4 miles away from St. John Episcopal Church and about 4.5 miles from The White House.
St. John Paul II was a Pope who realized what freedom and liberty really was, having spent time under the oppression of the Nazis and the Soviet Union. When he had the opportunity to lead, he worked with freedom lovers like Lady Thatcher and Ronald Reagan to destroy the scourge of Soviet Communism.
With the Pope and the looney-tooney bishops that are in the Catholic Church today, I'm guessing that St. John Paul II is spinning like a pinwheel in his grave.

I'm Catholic and I have no idea what this bishop is talking about. He is using his position to vent his personal racism against people who disagree with his viewpoint. In an age when Christian churches are under attack and their followers humiliated, abused, arrested and murdered, it is gratifying to see a political leader show solidarity and visit a church that anti-Christians wanted to destroy. Another Catholic leader who will do untold damage to the Church. It's hard to say if the devil was working to burn the church down or to save it.

My mother's side of the family cleared the virgin land tract in PA in the early 1800s. Being German they build the Lutheran church I attended as a child. Maybe that is part of why I can't stand hypocrites and liars. The example of Martin Luther calling out the evil Catholic church and pope of his time, stuck with me. Stand up for God, not corrupt men who dare to speak for God. They will have to answer for a life of lies. I guess since they don't really believe in the religion they represent, they don't think it will matter. They are ONLY concerned with money and power. It really is the work of the Devil. He has found a willing accomplice in this horrible man and the institution that back him.

The final straw for me, born a Catholic, was during Mass in 1968.
yje newly minted priest, painfully and openly effeminate (he made Liberace sound manly) lectured the congregation about birth control. The lecture/sermon may have been related to the papal encyclical 'On Human Life'; and the gist of his fairy tale was that women were not sexual beings, and that any man wanted just one thing from his wife - sex, and a lot of it, and the pill would cause women to be sexually oppressed by their husbands.
there was not one word about the sanctity of life - just an angry rant from a sissy priest.
That had a lot to do with my departure from the Church - and the guitars and folksinging didn't help matters, either.

His Eminence might do well to listen to his own words: "our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree". Seems like President Trump fits squarely into that category for the Archbishop.
Wilton made a sacred promise to uphold those principles, while the President did not. What validity is there to judge Trump by whether he adheres to a promise he never made?
