It would be difficult to overstate the magnitude of the challenge we are facing today. The damage done by this pandemic, and the certain knowledge that more lies ahead, is daunting. Its shocking human toll and as-yet-unmeasurable economic effects will shape us for a generation or more. But even now, it is heartening to see how New Jersey residents have risen to this moment.

teachers should then give up their super dooper vacay time & work like the rest of us . When this garbage about teachers being undervalued happens no one ever , ever mention the top heavy bureaucratic overloads who will gloom onto all the poor “ for the teachers” . balony .

Agree #1, the enormous bureaucratic overhead in our schools steals money from teachers on the front lines and our children themselves. As to this article - other than the author's praise, I can't tell if the bill is worthwhile or just baloney.

FTA: "there isn’t a moment to lose in implementing that plan"... It must be passed NOW, immediately, not tomorrow. It has to be passed this instant otherwise we will have to lay off teachers, police, and firemen by the thousands. By the way, new taxes fees and increases are on the way. Thank you for being caring Democrats.

You've done nothing but overstate the magnitude of this covid "challenge." Overstating the magnitude is what got us in to this mess.

NJ is so far in over their heads they need SCUBA gear. When confronted with this they claim they will be FORCED to lay off COPS, FIREMEN and TEACHERS instead of any other essential GOV employees in order to pay the COPS, FIREMEN and TEACHERS fat pensions.

I must be missing something. Aren't they getting paid during this whole pandemic? Now, they want more money for doing nothing.

Yet another reason public employee unions should be prohibited.

Allow me to say this... to hell with teachers. They're nothing but glorified baby-sitters these days.

Well, we wouldn't want a crisis go to waste. Name me one government employee that has missed a paycheck in this whole pandemic fiasco. None, Nada, Zero. What are they complaining about. When the "non essential" part of the economy is shut down, there should be an equivalent number of government services shut down as well. That has not happened. Go pound sand NJ! (:

Why should the teachers be granted special treatment? When they get the scores up to meet the rest of the world, maybe we can revisit this. Otherwise, they should sit back and prove their worth.

Dig deep; it's for the kids! The fat pensions surely merit a federal bailout.

If anybody should be classified as non-essential due to poor to no performance whatsoever, it is public school teachers. Sorry for the criticism if you are one of the good ones but you are a rare breed.

Abolish public education. Now! when every dollar counts and taxpayers are out of jobs with no money left to fund teachers' socialist health care plans.

“shocking human toll”. Is LESS than the typical number of lives we lose to influenza every year, and the losses are far more concentrated on the elderly than on children than the flu. The shocking toll is from the lockdown. Weddings, Graduations, Proms... nope, not in your lifetime kids.

My whole life no group has whined more constantly and freely than teachers. They can't be evaluated based on merit and performance. They can't be fired. They get more vacation time in one year than most of us get in 20 years. They have complete isolation from economic lulls. Then they retire when they're 55. Retired teachers also got stimulus checks. What kind of white collar professionals need a labor union anyway? Not one more dime until they ax the teacher's unions. This is our one chance to lay them all off and make them re-apply when we finally get around to opening up schools.

Sounds like a great idea to give more benefits to the people indoctrinating our children.

I am sure there are a lot of good teachers, especially in years gone by, but all the ones I have met in my area including a neighbor, are snowflakes. I wouldn't want them to teach my child. It's always whine, whine, whine. More money and a paid summer vacation. If parents are essentially home schooling now, shouldn't We pay less property taxes? Let's take away some of their "teacher" discounts. We are suppose to be "equal"

As a NJ resident, I am astounded how how much our education system costs and how little the children know when they leave high school. They seem ignorant of facts that, in my generation, we learned in grade school. Our school system is very expensive and very poor.

Did you know ??? In the great State of Stupidity, aka New Jersey, every town, no matter how small, has a board of education with several assistants, all making 6 figure incomes....even in towns with only one grammar school. Anyone like to guess why education costs are so high in NJ ?
