Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen warned Monday morning that major retail stores may be hindering the ability of smaller businesses to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic by not following guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.
"These owners are the engine moving the reopening of Texas forward so they can pay their bills and employees,” Bonnen wrote. "It is time we start calling out the retail giants for their disgusting disregard for the safety of others and the well-being of their neighboring businesses.”

My eyes are rolling. Navigating HomeDepot was like being a rat in a maze - plexiglass barrier everywhere, aisles blocked off and no one to answer my questions. It wasn't even crowded.
So are we supposed to stay at home and starve?

Yesterday I went to Lowe's. I had been previously when they had the 'waiting line' to get in - counting every person going in and out, making sure the people in the line were 6' apart, etc. Yesterday there was none of that. It seems that Lowe's had had enough of the politically correct garbage and just opened the doors! Yes, they still say 'observe social distancing' but YEA! I was able to get what I went for! I was quite proud of Lowes. Now how the heck this is keeping other stores from opening, I can't figure. It isn't Lowes that's the problem, it is the GOVERNOR who is shutting everything down. Speaker, you don't want to have to be in the same building with too many of us deplorables, DON'T GO TO LOWE'S! Again - explain to me how Lowe's not playing your 'limited number in store' game is keeping hair salons from opening???

Disgraced outgoing Texas House Speaker (R) Bonnen, not running for re-election because he offered to sell access/influence to a Texas Conservative, and then lied about pay-for-play.....has an issue with smaller businesses? I guess they did not pay his lobbyists enough to get a carve out.

I shopped at Home Depot here in the first weeks of this, employees wearing masks, nothing else different. I shopped at Lowes several times over a few weeks, but not in the last week or two. Plexiglass barriers between clerks and you, nothing else different.
I can't read the article due to my adblocker.....and I'm not particularly unhappy with Home Depot or Lowes, but maybe things have changed in the last few weeks. I haven't needed anything lately.

I've shopped at three different Home Depots, two Lowe's and two Walmarts in suburban Houston over the past few weeks. Bonnen is out to lunch with this nonsense. All these stores have their employees wearing masks, check outs mostly behind sneeze guards, with "sanitized" carts and hand wash generally available at the door. All I can say is Mr. Speaker, shut up!

Walmart and Lowes policies ARE disgusting. Counting people going in and marking aisles one way is STUPID. America wont develop herd immunity until we can move around freely. This corona mess is the biggest fraud ever perpetuated on the world.
Stupid Americans gave up our rights and freedoms without flinching!

Maybe in Texas, but not in Georgia. I've been going to Lowe's about twice a week for the last month to get landscape supplies. Everyone is wearing masks, they have disinfectant and hand washing stations at the entrance, and the check out line is roped off with distance markers. I'm not the least bit concerned.

To heck with that. Let small, "non-essential" businesses also engage in some of the "disregard".

I think it's probably their disgusting refusal to donate enough to Bonnen that bothers him.

I'm with #3!
Speaker Bonnen needs to SHUT UP. His disgraceful influence peddling behind closed doors to offer Michael Quinn Sullivan media access in exchange for TRASHING incumbent republicans to put in HIS OWN butt kissers was wholly unethical and not representative of the large majority of republicans.
Governor Abbott is doing a carefully (and painfully aggravating) PHASED IN re-opening of Texas businesses on a hard two-week at a time time line, and there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth! Mr. Bonnen has not resigned in disgrace because to do so would make a Dem the Speaker until the next election and he would be giving up too much authority granted to him by the Texas Constitution.
There is a fake meme going around that Home Depot sold a controlling stock interest to Nobama, which is one of those attempts to get conservatives to jump in knee-jerk fashion-- its simply not true and nothing but "bait". I was in Lowe's the other day and all went well.

Well there is a solution to that. Set aside your draconian arbitrary rules, let all businesses open on their own terms, and let people take their own risks.. LIKE ADULTS!
Your not our dad Dennis!!

I dislike having to shop at Home Depot these days. This queue outside the front door before they let you in is ridiculous. All of 10 people were in the store and we had to stand outside before being allowed inside. Then have to be "allowed" to leave. Going to try Ace Hardware and see if they have more common sense there. Ken Langone, what have your successors done to what was once a nice place to shop.

Consider the source -- Speaker Bonnen announced he wasn't running for re-election (in a safe Republican seat) after over 30 Texas House Republicans said they would not support him for another term as speaker.

I have nothing but everlasting respect and gratitude to Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes, all of whom have been there through our disaster after disasters occurrences along the Texas and Louisiana coastlines. They have always stayed open when nobody else did, and tried to get supplies to the people. The stores have adapted to almost anybody's fears. You can go in the store at Walmart, get it delivered, or pick it up. They have closed earlier to clean more thoroughly. I think that is about all anyone can do. The largest difficulty this disaster is that again these are the only stores open, and the disaster has gone on for months, and everyone is weary of it.

Forgot to say - was in Lowe’s in Dallas south of Love Field yesterday - not busy, no lines, nice employees. In and out w/o hassle.
Agree Abbott is dragging feet on opening all stores and allowing people to practice self-control.

What about the data? Exactly how many COVID-19 cases can be tied directly to people shopping at these businesses?

Note to Mr. Bonehead, If I wanna go and they are open
that is my choice and not yours to make. Texas needs less
like you and more like the leadership of those
companies you so did like.
And please be careful, your leftism is showing, some red neck
might take exception. Yes, I am native born TEXAN.

Even if there were 200 people in a Lowe's or Home Depot, it still wouldn't be crowded. Besides, I'm still trying figure out why with everyone wearing masks, why we still need to be six feet apart.

Politicians should not be paid when they shut the country down like this. They need to feel the same pain they are inflicting on everyone else.

I was in both stores yesterday and each time I was handed a cart that had just been sanitized, plus, every employee in the store was wearing a mask, though I was not. This dumbarse needs to pound his head into the dirt.

Well, bumb arse, open up other businesses and the big box stores wil not be overcrowded. Its one way to increase adherence to socialist distancing. There wouldn't be over crowding if people had other choices!

There has not been a single outbreak of this stupid virus at any big-box store in Texas!!!!! Not a single outbreak!!!!!
Nursing homes, yes!!! Big-box stores, absolutely not!!!!!
And the big-box employees are exposed to thousands of customers every day, since there is nowhere else to go.
I think politicians just have to talk to hear their own voices -- no matter how stupid the things are that they say!!!!!

How stupid. It's not these stores hindering smaller businesses from opening; it's the Texas House Speaker and others like him. The silly six foot markers are ridiculous. You're in the store, moving around close to people the whole time. Until it's time to check out; then, it's six feet apart, people. Then, at the register, you're within one foot of the cashier. But, the six foot rule is going to keep you safe. It doesn't make sense. I refuse to put my trust in something just because you tell me it's keeping me safe. Miss me with that!

FTA:"I’m tired of navigating a germ pool in an overcrowded Lowe’s, Home Depot, and WalMart,” Bonnen said. "They haven’t dealt with the devastation of having to turn customers away and yet their behavior might be what keeps hair salons and gyms closed and restaurants at restricted capacity.” This is SUCH A CROCK! Even the Republican pols are eat up with it!
