Minnesota’s COVID-19 Graph

Minnesotans need accurate data. Data on COVID-19 infections and deaths—and the modeling of that data—is key to decision-making during this public health emergency. If this data is poorly presented, it creates a false narrative about the facts on the ground, contributing to incorrect perceptions of danger, overly burdensome executive orders, and a longer-than-necessary economic shutdown. On April 8, roughly eleven minutes into a video press conference, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz displayed a line graph created by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). This graph compared confirmed COVID-19 cases in Minnesota to confirmed cases

Comments:

An excellent example of how governments can finagle graphs to project what they want it to project. Despicable!

The logarithmic values on the y axis is to track whether or naught the rate of infection surpasses 2:1. A 1:1 infection rate means rate of infection is not increasing. it seems the infection takes around 14 days to run its course, so it is ideal not to have the infected person avoid infecting 14 more people during that period.

Why is it that the political party of Governors have suddenly disappeared from news articles? Is it because demonrat governors are the ones who don't know what the hell they're doing and want to create panic and sow even more hate for the President so he won't get reelected?

It’s very difficult to find data in a usable form for the states. There should be bar graphs showing daily new cases and daily new deaths. The site Worldometers has graphs like this for the US but not the states. What those graphs show is that the infection rate likely peaked several weeks ago.

Looking at the axes is critical in any plot of data. Unless there is a really important reason, which is inherent in the character of the data, log axes are not helpful. There are specific kinds of data where a logarithmic scale is more easily understood than a linear scale, typically working with log functions in math, but this is NOT one of those times. A log scale is seriously inappropriate for this kind of data. In fact, this is a time where a log axis is used to deceive. Another thing to watch for in "deceptive plots" is a bar chart where the vertical scale does not start at zero. This is a common ploy to make something look like a big change when in fact it is a small change. Never trust a bar chart which does not start at zero scale on the left. , you are being scammed if you find one.

#8, you are right. If you are interested in some pretty good presentation of countywide data, here is my county, and I am pleasantly surprised to find the data to be pretty useful. Select the "Key Trends" in the gray bar at the upper center if you want the more useful trend data. https://public.tableau.com/profile/mapper.of.the.day.mod.#!/vizhome/covid19_joco_public/Dashboard I wish we had this exact presentation of data for each state, and the whole country.

At least six people were killed in Mississippi on Sunday when severe storms and tornadoes swept through the region, officials said. The victims were from three counties that border Louisiana — Walthall, Lawrence and Jefferson Davis, according to Mississippi Emergency Management Agency director Greg Michel. Before ravaging Mississippi, the powerful system pounded the northern part of Louisiana with multiple tornadoes and damaging winds, wrecking hundreds of homes and buildings in that part of the state. The city of Monroe, Louisiana, was hit especially hard, with 200 to 300 homes destroyed when a tornado touched down around noon, the city’s mayor

With the coronavirus lockdown still in force across Germany, authorities in the state of Thuringia were forced to cancel multiple commemoration events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. To boot, emphasized Hume, it’s unclear how effective lockdown policies have actually been, especially when compared to other, more sustainable mitigation strategies.
