Barack Obama’s endorsement

Anyone who doubts that Barack Obama has a sense of humor should take a look of his endorsement of Joe Biden to be president of the United States. Really, it’s a masterly performance, and delivered, mirabile dictu, with a straight face. Try it yourself. Grab a mirror. Assume your best ‘I’m-being-serious-and-sincere’ expression. Then say out loud that Joe Biden would bring ‘leadership guided by knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace’ to the Capital.

FTA - "Barack Obama’s better-late-than-never endorsement cannot save the campaign of this doddering political relic." For that matter, the dim party has become a political relic as has the msm. By the way, what's wrong with Obie? Based on the photo of him in Kimball's piece, Obie looks like he is in the advanced stages of a social disease or something.

Don't get too smug out there in Fantasy Land, "Folks," as Barry was want to say. Bear in mind that Uncle Joe at first said he would bring in a "Woman." He then amended it to a "Woman of Color." That could lead us to Michelle Obama. Then she (by "she", I mean Valerie Jarrett would be back in power as the de facto president) could bring us back to where we were before, in an economic pit, leading from behind, kowtowing to every third-rate despot on earth, America, no longer great. Barry would now blame our poor economic condition on Covid-19. It was all set up in advance. The only way they see to beat President Trump is to destroy the economy for the common good. Paranoia? Even paranoids have enemies. And the Obama's want to regain control. He's been promised this place of high honor all his life and no one is going to rob him of his megalomaniacal glory. Our only hope is prayer! And for Barry, there is always hell.

The truly tragicomic gold is in the fawning responses to the oh-so-presidential and mellifluous sounds of the august Fauxbama's seldom-heard voice. What is wrong with these people? That lovely voice--you know the one--that sweetly proclaimed that if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor; if you like your hospital you can keep your hospital; and if you like your health plan you can keep your health plan. Trump may sometimes act like a carnival barker and there's no question that he is a serial exaggerator, but the man does things. Good things. The Fauxbama, on the other hand, did nothing of any lasting value whatsoever and when he attempted to take over a sixth of our economy he made a hash of it. There are only three reasonable assumptions that one can draw from his promises re: Obamacare. He was detached from it all and, thus, totally incompetent and irresponsible; he was a complete and total liar (20x times); he was duplicitous in peddling something doomed to failure that would then lead to full-tilt socialized medicine. And they miss him. How? Why? I am grateful to God for helping us to survive those 8 years and giving us an individual who has the vision and the stones to repeal them.

I believe there are actually several layers to this. Michelle is looking to 2024, not 2020. By endorsing Biden now, Obama makes it more difficult for a serious candidate to step in and dislodge Biden at the 2020 convention, which could position someone like Cuomo favorably for 2024, lessening Michelle's standing. Better to have a loser democrat go down in flames in 2020 than to elevate any competitor for a 2024 run at it a second time. So Obama endorses Biden, and who will dare go against the Lightbringer?

For months now, it has been clear that Biden family corruption will be a campaign issue. The impeachment focused attention on ties between the vice president’s son, Hunter, and the corrupt Ukrainian oil and gas giant Burisma. But Hunter had equally close, equally profitable ties to Chinese state-owned banks. Those connections were formed when Joe Biden was leading the Obama administration’s policies toward both China and Ukraine. Cozy, profitable, and possibly corrupt connections with the Chinese government are the last thing Americans want to hear about their politicians right now. Those voters are closeted at home, worried about their future, thanks to a virus

" We may or may not have flattened the curve," Fox News's Brit Hume said recently, "but we've certainly flattened the economy." With that, Hume captured the fundamental dilemma of the nation's response to the coronavirus crisis. The methods federal and state officials chose to reduce the spread of infection — stay-at-home orders, closing "nonessential" businesses, limiting the size of gatherings — have involved enormous damage to the economy. After a period of early optimism in which some believed the disease could be conquered and then — presto! — the economy quickly turned back on, a more sobering reality has set in. What lies ahead is a long period of restoration,

Former passengers are suing Carnival-owned cruise lines and accusing company management and crew members of knowingly exposing them to coronavirus. In one case, the decision to continue boarding passengers caused a customer's death, lawyers representing a family said. The most recent case, filed this week, involves Susan and Michael Dorety of Texas, who boarded a Princess Cruise Line ship February 21. Michael Dorety became ill while on board, according to court documents. He later died from coronavirus complications and Susan contracted the disease COVID-19, said Rusty Hardin, a Houston lawyer representing the couple.
The Ventilator Shortage That Wasn’t 22 replies

In March, one of the most feared aspects of the pandemic was the widely reported coming shortage of ventilators. One well-publicized estimate, repeated by the New York Times, the New Yorker and CNN, was that the U.S. would need roughly one million ventilators, or more than five times as many as we had. Gulp. Ventilators are expensive, they’re complex machines, and they can’t be churned out in the thousands overnight. In the state that (as of today) has one-third of the country’s confirmed COVID-19 cases, New York governor Andrew Cuomo sounded the alarm for ventilators repeatedly. On March 27, he acknowledged “I don’t have a crystal ball”

First, it seems that the Wuhan virus has peaked in the U.S. This chart is from the CDC web site. It shows cases of COVID-19 by date of onset. I have posted it a couple of times before, with the caveat that this chart only included around one-quarter of the total number of confirmed cases. Now, however, it includes more than half of cases recorded by the CDC. I assume that no date of onset is available for the others. At this point, it seems clear that the epidemic has assumed the bell-shaped curve predicted by Farr’s Law in the 19th Century:

"The American food supply is strong, resilient, and safe," Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue assured Americans on Wednesday, "and in fact our food supply chain has shown tremendous agility in shifting production and logistics so suddenly from restaurant and institutional settings to retail settings" during the COVID-19 pandemic. There may be empty shelves now, he said, but "in the United States, we have plenty of food for all of our citizens." The new coronavirus is doing more than just creating logistical misalignment, though. Most meat is processed at giant facilities, creating a weak point in the production chain.

When the future author of Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville, arrived in Newport harbor, New York, at eight o’clock on the evening of May 9, 1831, it didn’t take him very long to realize that he was entering a country that was a New World in more ways than one. Tocqueville was immediately astonished at “the spirit of enterprise” that characterized the country. Americans, Tocqueville quickly realized, were “a commercial people.” The nation buzzed with the pursuit of wealth. “Almost all of them,” Tocqueville scribbled in one of his notebooks, are “entrepreneurs.” Hard work and meeting consumer demand were the path to economic success in the America encountered by Tocqueville.

Many US airlines are canceling 60 percent to 80 percent of their flights, and under federal law passengers on those flights are entitled to full refunds, Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal said in a statement. “However, many airlines have been obfuscating this right by offering travel vouchers as the default option, requiring passengers to take burdensome steps to request refunds instead,” they said.

As another five million people flood the unemployment system, the country faces a classic whodunit: Who killed the U.S. economy? The novel coronavirus must bear some of the blame. Social distancing has pushed millions of consumers and producers into their homes. A temporary societal shutdown means a temporary economic contraction. But the length of the recession—whether the economy bounces back post-shutdown, or whether we lose another decade of growth—is as much about government as the conditions on the ground.

President Trump’s decision to set the United States back on the path to work will be decried as mere politics, but it is the right decision. It is the task of politicians to consider the general welfare. This consideration sets the current emergency against the coming one, the need to reduce deaths from COVID-19 against the need to forestall the human cost of an economy in open-ended limbo. The data on COVID-19 remains insufficient and will probably remain so. The economic prognosis is, however, clearer, and we have the data too. The IMF is warning that a prolonged shutdown will lead to a Thirties’-style Depression.
