President Donald Trump is appointing a new “Opening Our Country” task force today to jumpstart the economy by early May. But the White House cannot succeed unless it persuades governors to cooperate. By dividing power, the Constitution creates resiliency in emergencies, but also demands cooperation between the federal and state government.
Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have rendered the trade-offs inherent in public policy only more acute. Even though the coronavirus has killed more than 23,000 Americans and sickened a half-million more, strict lockdowns have held deaths significantly below worst-case projections. On the cost side of the ledger, however, just one month of shelter-in-place policies has thrown more

My guess is the people will take Trump's side. Believe it or not dems .... There is people who really do want to return to work! It was reported yesterday in some states people are forming protest rallies to return to work.

Of course the national review would come with that opinion. A never trumper rag. The emergency declaration act is a good read.

Maybe so, but I'd hate to be a governor who opposes an order to reopon and is on the receiving end of a Trump Twitter storm.

It's a National Emergency... I wouldn't want to fight this in the courts... The Feds rarely lose these type of battles.

So, the north Atlantic and north Pacific states (and a very few in-between) don't want to join in the recovery of the country ? Oh well-good luck...
Let us know how that works out.

The government produces projections that vastly overestimate the infection and death rates and then claims that the suspension of the citizens constitutional rights has been effective in preventing disease. The actions, particularly of the governors, has not been commensurate to risk of the disease. This is tyranny.

Let's face it the DC NY media sewer will never change it's all about them. Let's see how people react when some governors drag this out...after all they are losing billions in sales tax, gasoline tax & $$ for unemployment payments.

Punishing those in your state who want and or need to resume gainful employment is hardly a way to ingratiate yourself with your voters. Perhaps, come election day, some blue states will be a little less blue. Maybe just baby blue...or pinko.

Under the National Emergencies Act that Trump invoked he has virtually unlimited powers and all the federalism stuff goes out the window. He can nationalize the state police or send in National Guard troops to enforce actions. FDR interred 44,000 Japanese Americans in WWII. Truman nationalize the steel industry when they went on strike in the Korean War. What part of "plenary" powers do the authors not understand?

Follow the money. If PDT turns off the spigot, they'll open up real fast. At least here in Cali where Newsome never met a $$$ he didn't want. He talks PDT up in public, but he's all talk. Me thinks he has his eyes on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and just wants Cuomo's publicity.
In either case, I think #1 has the right idea. Most people don't want to be slaves to the state. We were created to work and the people I know want to get back to business. The people are saying it's time to open America back up and get back on the TRUMP TRAIN to prosperity.
MAGA!!! KAG!!! TRUMP 2020 AND BEYOND!!! Open up! Open up! Open up!

If the President decides to order the Government worker back to work, they will go back to work.
IMO there should be some sort of way to allow Government workers with pre-existing problems to stay home, but most will return to work.
I don't believe the Governors have much choice as people will be on the move in such numbers that the Governors stay home orders cannot be enforced.

First, Trump's critics complained that he did not unilaterally shutdown the entire nation. Now when Trump wants to reopen the nation, they are all shouting state's rights.
What a bunch of hypocrites.

So, if the governor of my state reopens business and the economy is booming, and the people in the state next door are still shut down and financially underwater, what is ultimately going to happen in the state next door? Exactly.

IMHO this is a "briar patch" statement by our Very Stable Genius President.
DimRat governors across the country: "You can't force us to reopen! We're going to reopen ourselves, not because you make us! Nyah nyah!"
The result will be the same.

Tarrifs and threatening to withold funding has seemed to work well for the President in getting countries, international organizations and major manufacturers, why won't it works with the states? Bam! Trump in charge of when we open.

Another ignorant from the anti Trump National Review who needs to read the constitution. He acts like he did, but did he really? People who are wanting to go back to work will indeed back Trump, for this is something that should never have happened in the first place outside of NY/NJ/CA. The rest of the nation was doing just fine.
All governors who oppose reopening need to explain to all of us why they favor economic disarray and people committing suicide thanks to their own greedy grab of power.

Just let one of the states block intersate highways across their state and see hjow long it tkaes them to get opened up. Better not blink or you will miss it. a governor might shut down his , her, or its state: but block interstate commerce across it and it won't be closed for long.

Trump just needs to announce the re-openings. Most states will re-open. The states that don't will starve, or re-open.

FTA: "Congress can control commerce that crosses state lines, and even prohibit wholly intrastate activity that affects the national markets. It cannot, however, force individuals and businesses to engage in business in the first place. " How many businesses would refuse to open? Are they on a suicide mission? And don't most of the interstate ones, at least, have shareholders that they have to answer to?

Simply pathetic reasoning by National Review. Has anyone there every managed a business or owned one? They don't seem to have a grip on how capitalism works. The market for effete snobs is drying up and articles like this speed up the process.
