A Mississippi church is suing the city of Greenville after police shut down its drive-in service this week in accordance with a city ban on the practice amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Attorneys with the Alliance Defending Freedom filed the lawsuit Friday on behalf of the Temple Baptist Church. The filing challenges Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons' April 7 executive order that prohibits drive-in church services until a statewide shelter-in-place order is lifted.
The suit comes after eight uniformed Greenville police officers reportedly issued $500 tickets to congregants who refused to leave a parking lot where a drive-in service was being conducted Wednesday, the ADF said in a statement announcing the legal challenge.
Wide headlines must be split.

Every one of these cops that was there needs to be shunned for life. And seriously, don't give me, "They were following orders from the mayor". That garbage got all played out in the 40's

I'm not religious and my religious upbringing barely qualifies me as a heathen, but I know lots of people who get satisfaction and peace from their religions. I'd mentioned to my wife yesterday how stupid this incident was and that it's time for people to start filing all the lawsuits that we're going to need to start filing. I'm glad this group is ahead of the curve. I just wish someone would sue Michigan and Rhode Island now. I live in the NYC area where despite all the problems, people haven't tried stunts like Michigan or Rhode Island have tried, so I have no standing to sue in those states. But I'd like to see people challenge the massive overreach by both of them.

Government entities will already have a gaping hole in their finances due to the lack of economic activity that they have mindlessly and overzealously enforced.
Lawyers, whether on the government payroll or not, are not cheap. But lawyers will be required to mount a challenge to or a defense against civil liberties lawsuits that can and will only increase once the panic subsides. Arbitrary closings of this or that and excessive enforcements or fines are low-hanging fruit for plaintiffs and the lawyer who love them.
So...Podunk USA will get to pay attorney's fees and the very real possibility of damages that will further crack the piggy bank. As usual, bureaucrats don't think things through.

I saw him & him & his lawyer on Fox last night. He said there were 25 police cars for 6 cars & the cop wrote a ticket & said he was cancelled. Falwell's University is representing him. A man in Virginia is also suing the Virginia governor for shutting churches. Freedom of religion is freedom from religion in Democrat states.

Somewhere in the constitution (you know the outline of how we live in this country) it says that you are free to practice your religion regardless of what it might be. Actually, I think it's at the top of the list. I'm a Jew, not a Christian but Christians … Happy Easter and God bless. If the cops come for you have your Easter services in jail and call a lawyer.

$500 fines for parking at church. Is it hackneyed to write again: 'First they came for the churches..'.?
Who knew so many of our 'betters' were closet authoritarians; they need to be reminded of their place.

Allowed to go shopping. But not allowed to go to church. In a stinkin parking lot. Seated inside a car. We are allowed to drive thru McDonalds. Drive thru a pharmacy. But damned if you sit in your car for a church service.

Whatever happened to freedom of assembly? Quarantining the sick may be argued, but quarantining the well? I was also unaware that viri could travel between closed parked cars

The pastor was on Tucker Carlson last night. Twenty cars with people inside each with the windows up listening to the pastor, when all of a sudden six cop cars roll up, and start ticketing people. When the pastor protested, one of the cops had the gall to tell the him he had no rights. $500 fine each car. I say sue the mayor, the police department, and every one of those cops. Especially the arse wipe one who told the pastor he had no rights.

#3. It isn’t about religion. It is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. I pray that you will come to know Him. He makes life worth living. We attend church to celebrate with our Lord. Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. Render unto the Lord that which is the Lotd’s!

There must be a tipping point. Maybe churches will be the tip of the spear.

My experience with cops is that many are absolutely clueless about the Constitution. So I'm not surprised that any of this is happening. I've been involved in placing nativity scenes i public places and other First Amendment activities. And many cops, sad to say, are as dumb as wooden posts.

I think it was David Horowitz who penned the line, "Inside every Liberal is a Totalitarian screaming to get out." So true. Liberals believe they are magnificent and all-wise. They also believe in the use of boots to the head of those who don't agree with their wisdom.

Good for them! This nonsense has to stop. The powers that be are observing and taking notes at how effective fear has been to control the masses. They’ve tried to scare everyone with climate change for years but it’s too long term. CV is immediate, and has given tin pot mayors, sheriffs, health “officials” and even governors unconstitutional power.

"church congregants stayed in their cars with their windows rolled up while listening to Pastor Arthur Scott preach from inside the empty Go Church building."
Was it being streamed over wifi, or were the church doors open with him yelling from inside? It doesn't say how they could listen to him preach in those conditions. (I'm not dubious, but curious... If this lockdown continues much longer, this might be one option for our church, and I'd like to know how it worked.)

In Mizsippi no less. Tell me again how cops are so connected to the community that they'll never come for your guns. Apparently, salary and pensions are powerful motivators.

IMO this whole thing could be settled out of court by simply tearing up the tickets and stop harassing the Church..
An apology might also be in order.

Barr said this has to be enforced equality...the governors cannot allow cars in parking lots waiting for deliveries, shopping etc & not allow churches to have cars in their parking lots.
