The horrific spread of COVID-19 has filled hospitals and graveyards, shut down the global economy, and exposed deep fissures among nations. The international problems, such China’s rising threat and reliance on foreign sources for critical supplies, are not new. But the contagion puts them in sharp relief and will surely affect relationships going forward. Most changes won’t come until the crisis passes. Right now, policymakers are preoccupied with life-and-death decisions. They don’t want to challenge Beijing while they need its medical supplies and data. They also want to see if it will fulfill its promises in the Phase I trade deal or

Can't wait until I can start interacting with commerce again so I can NOT buy things from China.

We MUST quit relying on commerce from China for items that risk our national security.
Medicines are just one of many things we dependent on, and we have been seduced to do business with them. Other countries which are much friendlier to us such as Israel and India could fill this void.
The Chinese Communist Party is fully intent on world domination, and there is growing evidence that the "wet market" is only a ruse to create plausible deniability of where and how this pandemic began. The genetic code of this virus shows that is it NOT just from bats, and that it is really a recombinant creation variation of SARS.
What we are learning is that trade agreements and American business' effort to shed responsibility and costs to provide health care and company retirement benefits which had been offered to employees by shifting production to China in order to create profit for shareholders has greatly contributed to our over dependence upon China.

Godless, greedy leaders are a big part of the problem. Political and business leaders. Sure, you and I always want to make our hard-earned dollar go as far as possible. Nothing wrong with that, it is just good stewardship. If this virus fiasco does anything positive, I hope it shakes up people's thinking.

The article starts with monstrous lies so no need to read further. Hospitals are not filling up, the death count is way less than their stupid models predicted and governments have shut down their own economies, not the virus. Stop with the fake news, we are onto you.

The article is basically a rehash of everything we knew or have learned about COVID-19 and how we all are dependent upon China for much of our medicines, among other things. All these facts aren't worth repeating if we don't stop depending on China for so much. I want to see some actions taken, not the same old same old!

After this is behind us, there should be a thorough investigation of why the worldwide response was disproportionately greater than the actual threat. IMO. only two parallel reasons will stand out - First, China needed a fast response to the trade war which they were losing. and Second, PDT was seeking reelection and the only way to stop him was to slow down or wreck the US economy. Both 'problems' had a common answer - what we are seeing now.

FTA: "When Beijing did learn, it intensified the crackdown and enforced stay-at-home orders."
The author failed to continue with that statement, as the Chinese Communist tyrants clad in bio-hazard uniforms, busted down apartment doors and forcibly removed anyone with a fever, as indicated on their infra-red scanners. Many of those people were never heard from again. The Chinese rulers, going back 1,500 years, have always considered the peasants as expendable. From the building of the Great Wall to the COVID-19 outbreak, people can be replaced, but enlightened rulers are to be worshiped. I'm beginning to believe that this virus was supposed to be released only in the U.S. to "get back" at the strong POTUS, who belittled the "dragon" on the world stage. The mistake was not on the release of a bio-weapon, but that it was first released in Wuhan. Was it purposefully done to send a message to glorious leader?
It doesn't help that we have Drs. "Fraud" Fauci and Debbie "does Davos" Brick-x.

A misinterpretation of Trump's America First intent. The reality is that the world uses the US to its advantage and the US has accepted that since WWII in an effort to support our allies. Trump simply states that we are no longer going to be suckers and expect full access to and fair competition with people we trade with.
The whole point with China is that they are the WORST of trading partners, blocking their markets, stealing our intellectual property, being dishonest, and setting unfair tariffs. The interaction over the virus has highlighted their faults and will make it easier for Trump to push against them. Other countries with any sanity will as well.
The point matter is that if we have fair, open, and reliable trading with a partner, we CAN rely on them in times of crisis. For example, we could explicitly and reciprically codify in sales/purchasing arrangements and in treaties that medications in critical situations MUST be made available. That would prevent such issues as happened between Germany and Italy. It tells the manufacturers that they have an obligation to provide products and they must structure their businesses to do so. It may raise costs a bit but it is necessary. It makes business, partners in preparedness and that is essential since the governments CANNOT produce this stuff. Also, the businesses should be involved in the logistics of stocked materials. Moldy masks would be inspected and removed. The government is especially poor at this process. Business could warehouse critical products for 6 months and then move them to market; the warehouses being the emergency stockpile. Governments might foot the bill of warehousing, a fraction of actual purchasing. They could purchase product and draw down the warehouse when a crisis stuck. This kind of stuff is what business live and breathe. Governments, not so well.

If China has done this on purpose to harm the US economy and President Trump there should be a reckoning for their actions.
This should be a wake up call to reduce our trade for essentials like medical equipment and medicine to be manufacture in the US. China can be reduced to making Nike shoes with cheap slave labor is Nike chooses to do so the same with Apple. Reduce our trade with China to littler plastic toy police whistles, bamboo monkey hand back scratchers and other carnival items.
This should be a lesson to all countries dealing with communist who lie including Russia.
