I’m 64 and have a congenital blood disorder. It causes pulmonary emboli – blood clots, especially in my lungs. Twice, it almost killed me. I have what the docs call “an underlying respiratory condition.”
Since I was diagnosed and began treatment with daily blood thinners years ago, this condition is manageable (so long as I avoid skiing into a tree which would likely cause me to bleed to death). In fact, I’ll probably live another 20 years. I’m not asking for sympathy, and I don’t need it.
Save your sympathy for our country and our world, especially for younger people like my daughters.

Mr Beaton; I assure you the country is not being destroyed for your sake and other high-risk people; it’s being done for the sake of getting rid of Trump. Remember, it wasn’t a national emergency under Obama.

I had a P.E. in 2009. At the time, science advancing as they had, only 3 of 10 people who had a P.E. died.
I was in the 70%. I take the mini aspirins because rat poiso... er... warfarin had a bad effect on me. I suppose I am one at risk.
But then, at 68, that was always the case. From flu or otherwise. And, yes, don't shut the country down for me.

Amen! I will self isolate and take care of myself. I am tried of being patronized. I want the rest of the country to go back to work. I want my kids to go back to school. The stress of this is throwing me into a massive autoimmune flare and frankly, that is way more concerning than the stupid China Virus.

I fear that, as Easter Sunday approaches, the virus seems to be stabilized, and President Trump ends the "national timeout," a number of ambitious state governors (I.E., Cuomo, Newcombe, Wolfe, Inslee) resist, and using their state authority, try to keep the shutdown going until the DNC,

I just had this conversation with my daughter. She thinks that I'm nuts. When she was little she read something about tornado season. She absolutely made herself sick every time there was a watch or warning. I told her that we listen to the weather reports, we have a plan on where to go if the sirens go off and do all we can do to keep the family safe. It's up to God after that. During that season, a tornado did touch down about 15 miles from us and 8 people were killed. Oddly enough, she was comforted by the fact that we had followed our plan and survived. She was okay after that.
Those of us who are a bit older have lived through hysterics before. Most never came close to happening. I'm willing to be aware, be prudent, take normal precautions, and give the rest to God. So many people surrendering their freedoms so easily, to me, is much more frightening.

Americans 70 and over already stay at home. Before this, Medicare was issuing advisories on how seniors should get out, so they would not get depressed. The politicians have gone insane. Businesses cannot be ordered to pay salaries, after being shutdown, and their revenue streams cutoff. All this because the doctors think it necessary to prevent medical facilities from being overran. Instead, they should be opening emergency medical areas, calling upon retired medical personnel to come back and help, and other options. By the way, many hospitals have closed, again due to government policy, allowing new emergency clinics to not take medicare or medicaid, while forcing hospitals to do so, leaving the hospitals with all the nonpaying or payment capped patients, and the emergency clinics with the private pay, or 100% paying patients.

My 89 yr old mom refuses to cooperate. Her neighbors, myself and my brothers have all offered to shop for her. She went out this morning (not the first time these past weeks) to a dermatologist appt (it could wait until this is over, routine), then hit the grocery store and THEN complained about the crowds. Her 93 yr old neighbor undergoing chemo has done the same—shopping! There is no excuse and my mom was an RN! I’m fuming. And, she lies about it. I took her groceries last weekend, talk with her every day—she said she had plenty last night and then goes out this am. Several of my friends are having the same issue with their senior parents. I’m sorry but if they don’t care, neither do I. The economy is more important than the stubborn ‘elder’ group we’re supposedly doing this for if this is their attitude. Those of you cooperating, thank you. The rest of you...you’re on your own. Sorry, not sorry. Flame away...

Well, #7, I'm almost your mom's age, and I don't intend to stay home and vegetate for what life remains. I applaud her for being independent and doing what she wants. We (people in my age group) went through troubling times much worse than this. We didn't know if we would end up speaking German or Japanese. Food, gasoline, tires and other essentials were rationed, yet we hunkered down and survived. Your mom has faced much more troubling times than this, so let her do her thing.

You elected Jared Polis to be the governor of Colorado so you need to send your pleas to him. The Federal government does not control the businesses in your state. I suspect Greg Abbott in Texas will be open for business long before Gavin Newsom and Jared Polis are.

Guilford county, NC just issued a stay at home order. My company is exempt. When I saw the list of exemptions, I had to think hard of what WOULD be shut down. OK, jewelry stores, candy and craft stores, used book and video stores... Restaurants have been kaput for nearly two weeks, except for take out. My point is: 90% of commerce is still going on, and this is supposed to stop contagion? Only in the fevered brain of a lib.

Love the comments in this thread. It’s about time. I am also considered to be in the “at risk” population, due to nothing more than my age. I kept a hair appointment last week (before my state shut them down) because I was determined to support as many small businesses as I could. I already live a fairly “socially-distanced” life, except for my work. The the younger stylists were truly freaking out, not about their health, but about harming the “at risk” population. I told them, “Here’s the thing: the ‘at risk’ population is probably the least concerned about all of this. So you don’t have to worry about me.” I have clients who are not showing up for appointments that are not coming because their kids and grandkids are on their cases.

This madness is starting to resemble those old movies where people would flee lepers. When I was young there was no vaccine, effective treatment, or much less a cure for polio. It killed million and they were the lucky ones. Other were in iron lungs or had braces on their legs for life. But we didn't hide under the bed. We went out and lived their lives. If you never leave your house you'll never be killed in a traffic accident, plane crash, eaten by a shark, etc. Is it worth it?

First, I don't think it was bats, it was chemical warfare. Second, I am at risk for health reasons and age. I have no one to be the go-fer, so, yes, I go out by necessity.
A couple of people have called the radio station and indicated old people dying are no big deal. One said we have nothing to do, so we should stay home and stop spreading the virus. Wow. What I didn't hear either say was how they volunteered to help their older relatives or neighbors. Things I have done for years.
