ELY, Minn. — At the edge of a vast wilderness ringed by lakes and woods, a surprise discovery provided a rare jolt of optimism for a struggling mining town now known mainly as a prime destination for canoers: Massive deposits of nickel and copper — minerals that power cars and smartphones — lie under the earth.
Many jubilant residents of Ely and nearby towns are now hanging their hopes on a plan to build a massive mining facility under a patch of national forest that’s a stone’s throw from one of the most verdant watersheds in the world. But the project

Ely, fond memories of Boundary Waters Canoe basin, 1975, when the Boy Scouts were boy scouts. The A&W rootbeer drive-in at the end of the USA. Very cold water when you had to wade in, up to your....belt buckle, to get in your canoe first thing each morning to paddle on to the next adventure.

Yes, it's getting tougher because all your life you have been supporting those who love to kill babies and let all kinds of vermin into the country and then feed and house them with our tax dollars. You would rather support Bernie, who would take those $80,000 to $100,000 salaries you worked for and give the money to illegals and lazy welfare people. Same with the democrats you have voted for, and let them continue to place criminals' needs above yours and your families. You asked for it; you got it!

It's sad to see the hard line dems in Minnesota trying to justify a Leftist dem party that has almost nothing to offer them. Instead they use boilerplate dem talking points to falsely attack Trump. The union head says Trump " doesn’t believe any of the stuff we do" and is not "pro-labor" but the economy, pre virus, was the best in over 50 years and labor sure as heck benefited greatly. No, Trump doesn't believe in union socialism of pay for longevity or seniority protection for goof offs. Trump does believe in opportunity and good pay for good work. The things the unions/dems believe in killed their industries and their jobs because they demanded pay and benefits that are not justified/earned by the level of their contributions but instead won through intimidation. The things Trump believes in builds industry AND labor as a partnership where you get back according to what you contribute.
Apparently 75% of union MEMBERS see the truth; Trump is closer to what they need than the dems are. Union leadership and politicians know they probably have no positions in a Republican future and desperately attempt to cling to their power.
Even Reagan lost Minnesota in his election landslide. If Trump wins it, it will be amazing and crushing to dems.

Mining that nickel and copper will be a good thing. If a small area of lakes has to be lost for a while, then put back, OK. I saw huge gold dredging operations in Alaska that, if they had just been leveled back out when they were done, would be just fine after entire stream valleys were literally turned upside down. The mining itself was distruptive for a while, but the real failing THEN was the failure to relevel the gravel and rock when they were done. If it had been simply releveled, today you would have no idea that anything had ever been done. The same can be true for these other mines.
I have seen it in WVA. Knock the top off of a mountain, get the coal, then recontour it. Ten years later it is beautiful country, meadows, trees and you never would know it had been a mine. Twenty years later and it is good hunting country, and beautiful woods and hills, just a bit lower and a bit more rounded than before.

I have a friend who married a die-hard dem woman from Minnesota. Sitting at the dining table, she declared she’ll always be a democrat, to stay true to her parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. She had no clue about how politics work, but she’d rather die a democrat than “betray” her political heritage. That’s what Trump is up against in that Scandinavian-settled part of the country.
