Italy -- a country at the heart of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe -- watched its number of cases and deaths due to the novel coronavirus astronomically leap once again, up 793 deaths with 6,557 newly confirmed cases recorded in just 24 hours.
Saturday's jump marks the worst day for fatalities since the crisis began just four months ago.
The country now counts 53,578 diagnosed infections, up 13.9 percent, with 4,825 deaths -- the highest in the world.
More than 60 percent of the most recent deaths occurred in the northern region of Lombardy. Hospitals in the area have been reeling under a staggering caseload that has left intensive care beds scarce

Even with the country (at least theoretically) locked down and not generating new cases, there seem to be a huge number who got this before the government decided to shut things down.

This is what you get with socialized medicine and a very old population. The two do not mix well.

I only read one story about the connection between Italy and Wuhan, China. It's the high fashion houses that employ thousands of Chinese nationals as piece workers in the factories there. The are regular direct flights between Wuhan and Milan that were flying all through the early days of this outbreak. The large population of elderly were coming in direct contact with people coming right from the epicenter. Combine that with the local custom of kissing on the cheek when meeting someone and a system of socialized medicine, the death toll is a little more understandable.
I hope the Hollywood crowd think their new Gucci bag. It will be interesting if, they will stop buying after this is over.

An plder population and the fact that older people are left to fend for themselves.
When you literally refuse to help older people in an attempt to save the young, the old are up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

Is Italy over-classifying Corona for political reasons?

When Italy allowed China to send huge numbers of Chinese workers into Northern Italy to work in the manufacturing sector of the “Made in Italy” fashion industry, who travel back and forth between China and Italy routinely on direct airline flights especially during the Chinese New Year time, there is little doubt that Italy opened the barn door for some of those Chinese workers to be able to carry the Chinese corona virus from China into Italy. Talk about Italy shooting itself in the foot!

#2, 5, and 8 are exactly right. I was puzzled when I first heard that Northern Italy was the hardest hit by this virus until I listened to an interview of John Zmirak (The Stream) on Eric Metaxas yesterday. Italy sold its fashion companies to China, but they wanted "Made in Italy" to still be on the bags. So Italy imported Chinese workers, and here we are.
What is happening in Italy breaks my heart. I lived in Rome for over four years and dearly love Italy and its people.

The numbers from Italy and Spain are hard. And most other European nations like Greece, Germany, and most others are reporting many fewer cases and exceptionally few deaths.
Obviously the mass imported cheap Chinese labor, the Chinese insular enclave in Northern Italy with mob ties and no record of who was coming in and out, and the ancient population all being treated by a wholly inadequate socialized health care system were the main culprits.
What do these socialist countries spend their money on if not adequate health care? It's not like they field an army or have a grand naval fleet or a space program or really do much in the way of public works. Where does all their tax money go?

Those gregarious Italians exacerbated the problem by holding hug-a-Chinese to prove how unxenophobic they are. So add this Wuhan virus grim reaper to an already negative population growth scenario.
Among other bad side-effects of socialism/communism, is the enervation of the creative, competitive, inventive part of human nature, the part that has endured and then thrived after disasters of every kind, the Krakatoas and the Ice Ages and everything else in between, The will to live.
Then, there's the EU.

Italy was dying before the virus. Italy had one of the lowest birth rates in Europe. So you have an older population, heavy male smokers and direct flight with 16,000 chinese workers ,you have a disaster waiting. The communist pope must be happy about this. Maybe he can import more mooselims to fill in for the dying population. The elites should not buy any made in Italy products but they are soulmates. Goodnight Italy

#9, I lived in Napoli for a few years, two times, really enjoyed it in many ways. I became a real nut on Roman engineering and construction after seeing so much just laying around. The amazingly intact amphitheater in Pozzuoli, just a short drive or bus ride from our apartment was a real impetus to learn more. Love the food, real Italian pizza isn't something that Americans could even identify. So much art, architecture, history there.
Sad to see them going down, but no kids......your society is doomed.

If Hydroxychloroquine is supposed to work, why aren't they using it in Italy? I know we have our red-tape here to delay deployment, but that is another story.

What is happening in Italy is truly tragic. Will any lessons be learned from this? Doubtful.

This puts Italy's 'deaths per 100K population' up to just over 8. Contrast that with US rate of 0.1/100K, Germany with 0.09/100K.
But these numbers could change a lot by even tomorrow, let alone next week.
