CLEARWATER — Residents delivered a historic election result Tuesday by voting into office the first candidate to so publicly address alleged fraud and abuse by the Church of Scientology in nearly four decades. Mark Bunker, a filmmaker and longtime critic of downtown’s largest property owner, narrowly defeated four opponents in the race for City Council Seat 2. His platform included his desire for the city to urge the IRS to revoke Scientology’s tax-exempt status and hold hearings for city officials to understand the financial complexities and alleged abusive policies of the institution. “This clearly shows that Scientology does not have the power they think they do,” said Bunker,

Comments:

The interlopers have sunk their foul roots deeply into downtown Clearwater. How much did Miscavige and TCOS pay the Clintons for the "church's" tax exemption. Inquiring minds want to know. At any rate Scientology involves some of the most egregious celebrity dupes ever spied. Hubbard was a comprehensive sicko.

The second author is Kirby Wilson. After three tries at correcting the byline, it wouldn't correct properly. So let it be.

Bunker must be a brave guy. Scientology has a long history of vicious attacks against its perceived enemies, using scurrilous lawsuits, blackmail, and violence . And I'm sure it has pumped millions into politician coffers for protection.

This sounds cool, from a distance. Scientology was always a scam, created by a sci-fi author, and it just was such a successful scam that it has been growing like a cancer for decades and decades. Needs to lose it's "church" status. It's just a scam.

The Justice Department has filed a statement of interest in a case challenging a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) policy that enables biological males to compete against biological females. Attorney General Barr explained: "In our pluralistic society we generally try to accommodate how individuals desire to live their lives up to the point where those desires impinge on the other people’s rights. Allowing biological males to compete in all-female sports deprives women of the opportunity to participate fully and fairly in sports and is fundamentally unfair to female athletes. Sports are an important part of education and character development and provide

My dear old statistics teacher used to say that relying on any model however good but founded on past data was like driving by looking at the rearview mirror; fine as long as the future looked like the past. As governments struggle with their response to the Covid-19 pandemic the $64 trillion question is 'which past does the future look like?' Science Mag writes how models have become supremely important: "Entire cities and countries have been locked down based on hastily done forecasts that often haven't been peer reviewed. ... President Trump this afternoon signed a $2 trillion spending bill to respond to the health emergency, while the Federal Reserve spent the better part of a trillion dollars this week buying bonds of every description and lending money to foreign central banks. That avoided a financial crisis and stabilized the stock market. When I proposed a massive fiscal stimulus on February 27, I looked like a wild-eyed alarmist, and many readers on this site accused me of playing into a Democratic plot to panic the country and wrong-foot President Trump. When academics were asked to predict the most probable risks to humanity they concluded "human extinction is more likely to result from anthropogenic causes than natural causes": man rather than nature was to be feared. The top candidates were a malign artificial intelligence and a runaway biotechnological event. The Covid-19 crisis may be a biological threat but few anticipated a pandemic could also increase the demand for greater artificial intelligence powered mass surveillance from a frightened population desperate for safety. The fear of contagion was compared by Angela Merkel to WWII. "Not since German reunification, no, not since the Second World War has our country faced a

On Saturday morning, deranged anti-Trumper George Conway took to Twitter in hopes of having a real gotcha moment by showing a screenshot of a memo from White House Physician Sean P. Conley, which indicates that he is not an M.D. "So the White House physician isn’t an M.D.," he tweeted. "Good Lord. Someone sneeze on me now and just get it over with." (Snip) After this initial tweet, Conway probably googled what a DO is before making the follow-up tweet, "Betcha the first patient, who fancies people with the best degrees (until they tell him he doesn’t know what he’s talking about), doesn’t know, and doesn’t know what a DO is."

Even though the Covid19 infection is still on the rise in much of the world there is some hope it can be slowed down to where it can be managed as a chronic public health problem. (Snip) Should it ever settle down the lasting impact of Covid19 will probably be cultural. Physically the pandemic has seemingly left the world's infrastructure untouched. The accumulated deaths, while tragic, appear thankfully few compared to war. What obviously died was the confidence of the End of History. What Covid19 ended was the illusion of control. Before the virus world leaders had big plans for the

Talking about when baseball was a game, the “most awesome game,’’ back when he was dominating in the 1970s and ‘80s, relishing his time in pinstripes, pegging the 1978 one-game, Bucky F-ing Dent, playoff in Boston as the ultimate highlight. And talking about how it’s all so different now. “I don’t even watch the game anymore,’’ Gossage said. “It breaks my heart that I can’t sit down and watch nine innings of baseball because it’s not the game I was brought up playing

In a 2015 video Microsoft's Joseph Sirosh described the advantages of wiring up a herd of cows to the cloud application via a motion sensor. One of the farmer's problems is determining when a cow is in estrus so it can be artificially inseminated during the short period it is fertile. Motion sensors can pick up the abnormal restlessness of cows in heat with 95% accuracy leading to immense benefits for the Japanese farmers who implemented the system of connected cows. The Chinese Communist Party used the same system to inform and guide its quarantine during the recent Covid-19 outbreak.

While it's tempting to think of every epidemic as a unique event, a disruption of 'normal' life which will eventually return to the old routine, professionals know that it part of an endless struggle between humanity and disease, a struggle that has lasted -- and will last -- for as long as the species exists. "Every outbreak provides an opportunity to gain important information, some of which is associated with a limited window of opportunity ... Critical to moving the field forward, even in the context of an outbreak, is ensuring that investigational products are evaluated in scientifically and ethically sound studies."

Chris Matthews, one of the longest-tenured voices at MSNBC, announced his retirement during Monday’s night’s airing of his talk show, “Hardball.” Matthews, 74, said he and MSNBC had mutually agreed to part ways. The decision followed a series of events that resulted in criticism of the host’s statements about Bernie Sanders, African-American lawmakers, and comments he had made to female journalists and coworkers. “I’m retiring,” Matthews said. “This is the last ‘Hardball’ on MSNBC.” Matthews was due to retire in the near future with the events of the past week playing a factor in the timing of the move, an MSNBC spokesperson said.

Bernie Sanders is on the go all the time -- which seems to have given him a momentary case of a campaign brain fart as he accidentally boarded the wrong jet. The Democratic front-runner was spotted Saturday making his way off of a private Gulfstream between campaign stops in South Carolina and Massachusetts -- the latter being where he held a rally at Boston Common ahead of Super Tuesday. Fact is ... the S.C. primary looks like it's gonna go to Joe Biden, as he's well ahead of everyone else in the latest polls. Looks like Bernie's cutting his losses and moving on. As for this little mix-up here, it's kinda funny.

You’ve probably heard the expression those who can, do, and those who can’t, teach. A Rhode Island public school teacher perhaps gave that chestnut a new meaning by allegedly taking to Twitter with an offer to pay someone infected with COVID-19 to cough on President Trump. The educator in question, who has subsequently deactivated her Twitter account that purportedly operated anonymously under the handle “Proud Teacher,” is said to teach English as a Second Language to middle schoolers. She previously taught in neighboring Massachusetts. Chutzpah is a Yiddish word meaning incredible audacity. The most famous example is the man who murders both his parents and then throws himself on the mercy of the court because he’s an orphan. Neither Prince Harry nor Meghan Markle is Jewish, and it’s doubtful if they even know the meaning of the word “chutzpah,” but they’ve sure got it – and Trump was not amused. One of the things that was immediately obvious about Meghan Markle was that she was “woke.” That is, in keeping with her “B” level actress status, she eagerly copied all the political shibboleths of the big Leftist stars
