The New York Post last week published an article with the ominous headline, “Pharmacists quietly panicking over looming respiratory drug shortage.” The gist was that in addition to the rush on personal protection products such as face masks, hand sanitizers, disinfectants, and rubber gloves, the supply chains for various important prescription drugs,(Snip), are fraying.(Snip)China has become the world’s largest producer and exporter of the essential “active pharmaceutical ingredients” (APIs) used in the manufacture of drugs, not only in China but also in other countries, including the United States. The United States imported $3.9 billion worth of pharmaceutical raw material from China in 2017, an increase

This scares me more than the virus. I hadn't realized, until about a week ago, that most of our drugs are made in China. This begs the question, why? Why aren't we making our own drugs here? I know the answer as well as you; because it's cheaper to get them from China. At this point, I'm willing to pay more than to have our drugs come from China.

And we HOPE that their drug quality is better than their pet food or infant formula.
"The United States imported $3.9 billion worth of pharmaceutical raw material from China in 2017, an increase of nearly one-quarter from the prior year, according to IHS Markit.
This is trending in the wrong direction.
We need a law requiring ALL pharmaceuticals used in the USA be made in the USA, it is just that simple.
Importing raw materials probably doesn't compromise safety, but it does put us at the mercy of the Chinese.
Even if you were to assume that the Chinese were entirely ethical in everything they do (clearly false) what do you think they would do if there was a worldwide need for some drug and they were the only supplier? A: Keep it for themselves? B: Multiply the price by 100X and hold us hostage? C: Continue to supply it to us at the normal prices, even if it were needed in China?
I'm not certain but I can tell you with near 100% certainty that it would not be option C.

#2, LOL! Nope, not likely.
When I see that whaler at Wendy's with a Big Bacon Classic Triple, the biggest fries they have, a large Frosty and giant Coke........more calories than I eat in two full DAYS, to be eaten at one sitting, I'm going to have trouble pinning that one on the ChiComs. Grin.
But I sure don't want any important medicines only available from them.

Should be there be a concern over the number of infections in China remaining constant since early January? That number has remained at 80,000 +/- for the duration. Further the infection rate in China soared dramatically but has now, according to the charts that I find, plummeted as rapidly to almost zero.
Food for thought: Indicators are that this is a man-made virus derived in China. Is China using this virus to get back at the US/Trump because of our tariffs, etc. Now take it one step further. Why the sudden drop in deaths and infections. Simple surmise; vaccinations. Whose to say China didn't cut this loose with a purpose knowing they had a vaccine to stop the onslaught in China and to be used to hold the world hostage.
This of course is pure speculation, but some odd data is being bandied about that leads to such speculation. One more tidbit. Two past administrations are responsible for shifting much of the manufacture of drugs to China along with massive sectors of our manufacturing. President Trump has brought back by the ship load our manufacturing to the detriment of China.
Put all this together and the speculation leads more and more to reality.
Finally, "Never let a crisis go to waste!" Factor this into the formula and the Damnocrats appear to have gotten their fourth impeachable offense and are prodding the media to capitalize on it.

Re #1, read the article again. The active ingredients are made in China. The drugs are made here. I still don’t like that...

When I was in the pharmaceutical business (over 15 years ago), many companies including mine produced drugs in Puerto Rico, primarily due to US tax breaks to spur investment and job growth. I know my employer closed their plant in the late 90s and moved production to Ireland because the US govt let those incentives expire (during the Clinton regime). Why not bring them back and build a US based generic drug industry again?

#7, now that US business tax rates are more competitive, it would seem that this is the perfect opportunity to bring pharma manufacturing back to the USA. How about a special tax break for US phama producers? The Dems keep screaming about "prices for prescription drugs are too high".....
I don't see it. I get a couple of different generics at Walmart, no insurance.....$4 for a month's worth. Even if you planned badly and are living on SS, $4 a month seems pretty cheap. I am sure that there are plenty of latest and greatest, non-generics which are really high, but the majority of us who have various chronic issues are on generics.
Get them made in the USA. Even if it goes up to $5 or $6 at Walmart. A 25% or 50% increase at retail at that price point is still CHEAP compared to a heart attack or death or whatever the alternative is.

#j1 Big pharma and the profits. Look at the advertisement on television - nothing but another pill that will cure everything.

# 4 - Not so fast. # 2 has a point. You don't really know what's in your medicine. I don't know what's in my diabetes pills but the last two gave me a 30lb weight lose in just a few months. And I never dieted. Because of other problems, we switched to another pill that acted the same without ugly side effects. So if some medications can help you lose weight, some can actually make you gain. Prednisone comes to mind. Aside from the ingredients in medicine, for whatever reason corn syrup has been added to a whole bunch of foods we eat and even in toothpaste. Its so nice you joined us to tell us you don't need to diet or lose weight but then to assume everyone's body is the same is rather naive.

I had to change my BP medicine a few months ago because the Chinese active ingredient was found to increase your chance of getting cancer (Valsartan). I had been taking it for years. Nice to know now but a little late.

Generic drugs sales are vast -- $200+ billion a year. There are five major manufacturers with plants all over the world, especially in Mumbai, India. This article addresses the raw chemicals that are used, which are often in China. But raw chemical companies span the world, and they can ramp up if demand increases.
Bats carry several strains of corona viruses. Covid 19 is closely derived from one of them. It shows no signs of being a "designed" by a human. The story that the first cases acquired the virus at the wet market has been closely studied, and there is no reason to doubt its veracity.

President Trump has been talking about bringing back US manufacturing jobs from abroad since he was running for President. US manufacturing, including much pharmaceutical manufacturing, went down the tubes after Joseph Biden and other DC establishment “Swamp” politicians passed NAFTA, and allowed the globalist investor class to close down a huge segment of US manufacturing thus send millions of American manufacturing jobs, including pharmaceutical related jobs, abroad to low wage countries including China. Resulting in today China having control of many pharmaceuticals used throughout America today, with China having the power to shutdown pharmaceutical supply chains between China and the USA at a minutes notice or no notice at all. So it should become one of Trump’s top political priorities to bring as much medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing as possible back to the USA.

It may be prudent to consider the quality control/safety of pharmaceuticals made in India as well as China and Third World Countries. No problem with pharmaceuticals made in Great Britain and Israel. Hopefully, this unfortunate plight will restore manufacturing of pharmaceuticals in this country.

The OTC medications seniors are getting in the mail are trash. In 2012 an innocent OTC medication burned a hole in my esophagus. Last year generic magnesium and acetaminophen were not properly coated and burned. When I called the insurer, I was referred to Right Source who passed the buck to the pharmaceutical company. Their response? "I am sending you a box with a label and I want you to return it to me" Sure. I said "You forgot to say you were sending a medical release form and I am not signing it. I would be happy to send you a few tablets." Never heard from them.
That heartburn you are getting is from your meds. I don't trust India any more than China.
