Tulane University's "Victory Bell" has been removed from its pedestal on the school's Uptown campus after officials learned it was originally used as a plantation bell. In a letter emailed to the Tulane community, President Mike Fitts and Board Chairman Doug Hertz said they were informed last week that the bell was originally used to direct the movements of enslaved people on a plantation. "It is terribly disheartening to learn that it is, in fact, a vestige of a horrific part of our nation's past," the letter said. "Now that we understand its history as an instrument of slavery, continuing to use this bell

The Gramscian communist plan - erasing history to make the American populace ignorant, ashamed and vulnerable to fundamental change, continues apace. Joseph Buttigieg is smiling, wherever he is.

Yet another example of re-writing history. Instead of using the bell as a centerpiece for learning...let's bury our head in the sand so we aren't reminded of what occurred in the past.

Should every dwelling connected to slaves at one time or another be burnt to the ground?

These people are slaves to stupidity ignorance and racism. Liberty set them free. This is the bell of freedom and liberty in their honor and it should be rung regularly.

Even worse OP, there were blacks in the pre Civil War South that kept slaves. When is that ever going to be admitted to? I have no problems with a bell. How else are they going to communicate with the people on the plantation? The snowflakes forget this is way before telephones were invented. So how else were they supposed to communicate? Sometimes a bell is just a bell.

The bell is not a sentient being and is in no way responsible for the institution of slavery. You could make an argument that the bell which was chattel property and was totally controlled by the plantation owners was in fact also a slave. When the slaves were emancipated, so was the bell! I think it would make sense to continue ringing the bell in joyful celebration of the end of slavery in this country.

Not only burn every building and structure that was associated with slavery but salt the soil of the one-time plantations so nothing can grow again and fence it off with high solid fences so no one can be offended by seeing it.

The whole nature of redemption seems to elude these people.
The entire concept of redeeming that which was meant for evil and using it for good is a rather central feature, dare I say dogma, of Christianity. People of old more rooted in what was then the ubiquitous presence of Christian teaching in and out of church would never have questioned the usage of an instrument of slavery being repurposed and thus redeemed by a black institution of higher learning. No different than the repurposing of an old plantation house into a black school. It would have been cause for joy.
Thank God for redemption or else the whole world would wallow in darkness and ignodance. Sadly, that is exactly what these people propose.

Tulane is nothing but a playground for wealthy Northeasterns. I think 8% of the student body is from New Orleans.

New Orleans, the slave market of the South, is far more deeply tied to the vestiges of slavery than an old plantation bell. Slaves were bought and sold in huge numbers citywide. Its rich slave history, particularly in the old French Quarter, pre-dates by a half-century the American Revolution. Should't the SJWs wipe New Orleans off the map?

The Old Slave Mart in Charleston, SC, by the same standards should be torn down except that it is a huge money-making tourist attraction. Now there's a dilemma for you.

Its a Victory Bell, for the victory in the fight Against slavery. It was probably taken from a plantation by force of arms during the Civil war. Are these people pro slavery, they sound like Democrats.?

I thinking it was just a dinner bell, used in more places than plantations, to call people in to the house when the meal was ready. We left NO for the North Shore almost years ago, and don't regret it one bit. The best thing, we missed Katrina, Ray Nagan and the statue warrior, 'Baby' Moon Landrieu!

So tiresome.
How about destroying all the rivers that carried goods that were grown by slaves? Maybe they can
"blow them up".
Destroy all roads that were used by wagons which carried slaves or slave grown goods?

A bell was used to direct "slave workers" it also told overseers what they too must do, does that make them slaves to the bell also? yet bells were used for many other things and still are, calls to church, naval time, warnings and not to forget the dinner bell; how does one know what "the bell" in question was actually used for. The person that wrote and complained (without seeing the letter and providence) may assume it was to shape the minds of doing certain actions at its sound i.e. Pavlov and his dogs. open your minds does not God with nature do the same daylight and we rise the dark of night we sleep, winter we dress warm and summer we don't. Dose that too make us slaves. To erase history and the mistakes that have been rectified is but to repeat them over and over for not knowing.

Shouldn't we rejoice that we no longer have slavery and can now use the bell for good purposes? Why dwell on the use of the bell in the past? Celebrate the present. Celebrates the bell's use as a call to class or worship or whatever. Celebrate that there are white and black students together on campus. Get on with living in the present and be thankful!

Well then tear down Mt. Vernon and Monticello. No one should be subjected to seeing the homes of slave-owners.

Have a question: Were the Confederates democrats and if they were, why do the democrats want to remove every detail of the civil war? It makes sense to me that they were probably democrats, seeing that they voted against abolishing slavery. Just askin.

Why don't all those "offended" by the historical existence of plantations in the south just leave and head on up to the frigid north... for good?

Asinine manipulation, which will get worse the longer we put up with it. At some point just say, "That's silly. Now go back to the kids' table."

Shouldn't it be considered a victory that the bell has been repurposed? Wouldn't removing the bell be like 'whitewashing' history?
Just asking.
