Iain Murray grew up reading and writing by candlelight, not because he lived in premodern times but because he lived under democratic socialism. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and other contemporary American advocates of democratic socialism lean heavily on the democratic part, which is at least in part a matter of marketing. To take their talk of democratic principle seriously requires forgetfulness and credulousness: During the last great uprising of democratic socialism in the English-speaking world — in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, where young Iain Murray, now a fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, was doing his homework by the light of coals and candles —

Very thoughtful article, especially "We have the Bill of Rights to protect freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the free exercise of religion, etc., not because we expect that majorities will reliably support and protect these rights but because we expect that majorities will be hostile to them." We EXPECT majorities to be hostile to rights. Consider that many of the problems we have, developed because minorities exercised their rights in bad ways. YET, they were allowed to do so because they are Constitutionally allowed to do so. Conservatives accepted this as a necessary evil because the rights they used to do it were MORE important than the individual issues at hand. At the same time, dems bent or broke Constitution requirements, i.e. being required to pass laws, in dealing, for example, with immigration. Now, the dems want to eliminate the Electoral College, the methods of selection of Senators, and the balance of the Court system because they are not getting their way as Republicans follow Constitutional strictures and re establish good order. Dems use Constitutional rights to undermine society and then ignore Constitutional structures to get what they want. It CANNOT be allowed to be both ways. THAT well defines dem vs. Republican. Dems seek a pure majority democracy with little protection of minority rights. Republicans seek to protect the Constitutional Republic and the rights of ALL citizens. Dems seek rule by the elite and ignore flyover country. Republicans are trying to represent all the citizens, protecting their rights by observing the Constitution's designation of representation to protect those rights. The differences between a democracy and a Constitutional Republic are subtle but critical. Our public education system has dulled the ability to think critically and understand the importance of the differences and WHY rule by whim or a pure majority is such a terrible idea.

Well written Kevin. If you want a good example of the majority trampling on the rights of the minority you only need to look at the house impeachment process. If that is what you want for yourself then vote for a democrat.

Kevin D. Williamson is a creep. Attacking another creep doesn't make him less so. That he may intermittently say something sensible doesn't excuse stuff like this: https://www.nationalreview.com/2016/03/donald-trump-stupid-psychopath-ignorance-policy-complex-problems/ In 2016, Ben Shapiro said voting for Trump was tantamount to racism. Kevin D. Williamson called me a stupid psychopath. That ended them with me. Williamson's hatefully vile articles and books about people who supported President Trump are what's wrong with what's left of National Review.

I was an adult in the 70s and 80s and reasonably politically aware. How is it that if the condition of U.K. at that time was covered at all by the American press it was with a pillow until it stopped moving. Without the internet the press could cast a cloak of invisibility over anything that didn’t fit the leftist narrative , damn them, the bastids.

Thank you so much, #3. Clearly, Mr. Williamson is very much a creep. He can write all those nice things about why socialism is bad, and then turn around and fail to see how Trump is the only person right now standing for the US Constitution, and can stupidly, ignorantly, in defiance of the clear facts, call Trump a psychopath and worse. I will note that Mr. Williamson is not to be bothered with in the future.

With the Democratic presidential field beyond the New Hampshire primary in flux, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has become the subject of intense discussion. Might he save Democrats from a lackluster lineup of candidates? Is he the great centrist hope? Can he defeat President Trump? Maybe, maybe, and maybe. But there is another question: Would anyone be discussing Bloomberg absent his $55 billion fortune? The answer, of course, is no. But, for the moment, with Bloomberg having never been in a debate, with few voters having seen him, and with none having had a chance to vote when his name is on the ballot,

NEW YORK CITY Is it possible that President Trump has already beaten Sen. Bernard Sanders? Four years ago, Bernie Bros stormed Iowa and took over the Democratic caucuses. Party leaders for the second time had crowned former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee already, and for the second time an unlikely interloper swooped in and smacked the crown off the top of her head. Mrs. Clinton had already been denied the nomination once eight years before. Party leaders and the Clinton Mafia were not about to let that happen again. They unleashed all the political dogs of war after Mr. Sanders and his wildly enthusiastic foot soldiers.

Climate change hysteria has been dialed up to 11 over the last year or two. Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who knows little or nothing about the subject, apparently will continue being nominated for a Nobel Prize until she wins one. But, hype aside, what is actually going on with the Earth’s climate? Anthony Watts offers seven charts that show the effects of the last decade of alleged global warming. The first one has to do with the beneficial effects of increasing CO2–plant food–in the atmosphere. From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years

A joke going around Democratic circles: What’s the difference between Joe Biden, Jesus Christ, and herpes? Joe Biden ain’t ever coming back. Four nurses not in on that joke feverishly sought to resuscitate the ailing candidate on ABC several hours before the broadcast of General Hospital Thursday. Nurse Sunny warned that Republicans “play dirty,” announced that “I think Lindsey Graham should be ashamed of himself,” and assured her guest, “You are authentic.” Nurse Joy countered Biden assertions with “That’s right” and “That’s true.” All seem perplexed that the recent impeachment inquiry derailed Biden rather than the president. “People know me,” the fourth-place finisher

So much of the drama of the last three years of the Trump administration is about the conflict between the Constitution, which requires political oversight of the bureaucracy, and the Resistance’s strongly held view that political oversight of the administrative state is evil. The Russia collusion hoax was perpetrated by bureaucrats who admitted they were motivated by a a belief that their foreign policy vision was more appropriate and legitimate than the one chosen by the American people when they elected Donald Trump to be their president. Likewise, the Ukraine impeachment effort was ginned up by a group of bureaucrats who wished that President Trump had

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s defensive response Tuesday to the news that special prosecutor Dan Webb has re-indicted TV actor Jussie Smollett underscores that she still has no plans to explain why her office handled the case as it did last year. So allow me to offer my best guess: No sinister conspiracy. No backroom deal. Foxx didn’t collude with powerful people to try to give a break to a celebrity, as some have insinuated. She wasn’t trying to curry favor with the black or gay community — Smollett is both, and she is African American.

Commissioner Rob Manfred is mulling a fundamental change to Major League Baseball, a development that should not surprise anyone, given the obstinate disregard he’s shown for the traditions and inheritance of the sport since succeeding Bud Selig in 2015. The latest novelty entertained by his office is a proposal that would expand the MLB playoffs from their current ten-team format — with three division winners and two wild-card teams in both the American and National Leagues — to a field of 14. Per ESPN, the proposal would add “a reality TV-type format to determine which teams play each other in an expanded wild-card round,” the perfectly farcical cherry on top

The Democrats’ white knight, Michael Bloomberg, might be a good businessman, but he has exposed fatal political weakness even before his presidential campaign is off the ground. At the first whiff of criticism, he folded, apologized and repudiated the law-and-order policies that were his greatest legacy as mayor. No wonder President Trump called him “a lightweight,” as Bloomberg squirmed to dodge the fallout from an old speech justifying the NYPD’s crime-fighting stop-and-frisk program. “You’ve got to get the guns out of the hands of people . . . to stop [kids] from getting murdered,” Bloomberg says in leaked audio of a 2015 speech. Democrats seem to term everything racist, especially when it has anything to do with Republicans or President Donald Trump, whether it makes sense or not. Some of the things they’ve termed racist over the years are just downright silly. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) demonstrated exactly that during a Congressional hearing on the proposed Trump budget for next year. Russell Vought was answering questions for the Office of Management and Budget to Congress. Lee attacked the budget talking about the “racist roots of work” and then goes into a confused rant.
