Measuring screen time doesn't cut it anymore, according to Stanford researchers who announced the launch of the Human Screenome Project this week. The project, as described in the MIT Technology Review, will study digital screen time by taking screenshots of participants' devices at five-second intervals. "Mapping the human screenome can be a critical and cross-cutting part of solutions and theories about social challenges involving media – from fake news to smartphone addiction to social media and mental health," the authors wrote about the project, which they compare to mapping the human genome.

For information use only. Will this "stealth" intrusion into your daily cellphone habits every end? Even legislation won't be able to stop the genie let out of its bottle. This is akin to the days when companies hired people to watch their employees to make them more efficient. This is diabolic, as using MIT is their "governmental" cover screen.

I choose not to own a smartphone or anything else that is labeled "smart". Like Alexa, or the appliances that do everything but change the oil in your car. All I want is to be able to make a phone call and send a text. That's it. I can turn my own lights or television off and on thank you very much. I certainly realize that if a person is disabled that these devices can be a God send. But I just don't want to be watched and listened to on a constant basis by who knows whom. I just find it all creepy and will participate as little as possible. I know most people love their phones and they look at me as if I have another eye growing out of my forehead when I tell them I don't want one. To each his own.

Never! This is the worst proposal to invade our privacy that I have ever heard. The American people have got to strongly resist this attempt to legalize universal surveillance.

They'd be pretty bored. I have TWO apps, Firefox to do Lucianne and other news, and GasBuddy for travel fuel stops. NOTHING else. I have uninstalled most of the garbage ware, and disabled all that won't let me uninstall it. Every once in a long while I try the pre-installed, non-uninstallable weather thing....and it is slow as heck. I want a phone that I can talk on, and check the news on the net. Nothing else.

I agree, #1, but unfortunately that genie is already out of the bottle. You'll have trouble buying a non-chipped appliance if you want one, and you've probably already been forced, even if you object, to have a 'smart meter' monitoring your usage of gas, electricity, water, or all three-- as well as when you come home, when you're doing a load of laundry, when you're brushing your teeth--often without your knowledge or consent as to what it does. Here in Ohio our faces are automatically scanned into a crime database when we renew our licenses-- even though most of us have never committed a crime. And supposed conservative Republican Mike DeWine, Attorney General, kept it secret for the first two years-- such is the new scope of our government-- and the death of all privacy. Creepy indeed.

Nearly a dozen U.S. troops were injured after two Iranian missile strikes on a pair of American-held bases in Iraq last week, the Pentagon reported in a reversal of what military officials and President Donald Trump initially said. The Defense Department said Thursday 11 U.S. service members were treated for concussion symptoms after Iran launched ballistic missiles at bases in al-Asad and Erbil, Iraq on Jan. 8. The strikes were retaliation for a U.S airstrike days earlier that killed a high-ranking Iranian military official. (Snip) He said they were taken to two hospitals in Germany and Kuwait and are expected to return to Iraq.

London - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday urged Iran to send the black boxes from the passenger plane shot down by its forces to France for analysis and said the first remains of victims should soon arrive back in Canada. Trudeau told a news conference in Ottawa that France was one of the few countries with the ability to read the flight and cockpit data recorders from the jet, which he said were badly damaged. (Snip) “Iran does not have the level of technical expertise and mostly the equipment necessary to be able to analyze these damaged black boxes quickly,” Trudeau said. “There is a beginning of a consensus

As Prince Harry prepares to be reunited with his wife and son in Canada, the country's biggest newspaper has told them they are not welcome to live there. In a scathing editorial, The Globe and Mail said: 'Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal.' Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau tweeted before Christmas that Harry, Meghan and eight-month-old Archie 'were among friends, and always welcome here'. But yesterday the nation's most influential newspaper condemned the couple's 'vague and evolving plan to move to Canada while remaining part of the Royal Family', adding: 'The Trudeau government's response should be simple and succinct: No.'

The National Security Agency (NSA) is starting the year off on the right foot by alerting Microsoft to a flaw in its Windows 10 operating system, instead of secretly weaponizing it. The intelligence agency discovered 'an extraordinarily serious security vulnerability' that could spoof the digital signature of software that could trick a PC into letting malware in that is posing as a legitimate application. The bug was uncovered in NSA's own research and by disclosing this information to the tech giant, the agency believes it is putting 'computer security ahead' of its own agenda. The NSA came under fire five years ago for weaponizing a less sever flaw found in Microsoft's technology,

If the Trump era has taught us anything, it's that large numbers of white people in the United States are motivated at least in part by racism in the voting booth. Donald Trump ran an openly racist campaign for president, calling Mexicans rapists and criminals, regularly retweeting white supremacists and at least initially balking at repudiating former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Trump made it clear in his campaign that "Make America Great Again" meant that America was greater when white people's power was more sweeping and more secure. White voters approved of that message by a whopping 58 percent to 37 percent.
