Fort Lauderdale - The state intends to buy a huge chunk of land in the Everglades currently permitted for oil and gas drilling, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday The 20,000-acre purchase from a Miami family who made their fortune in real estate would be the largest land acquisition in a decade and would prevent oil drilling close to Broward County’s western border. “This will permanently save the land from oil production,” DeSantis said. “With this acquisition, there will be nearly 600,000 acres of wetlands in water conservation area three that will be protected by public ownership for recreation and restoration.”

Comments:

This sounds like someone who sells the Brooklyn Bridge to some rube. Either that, or President Trump is going to move Capitol Hill after the 2020 elections into a real swamp.

DeSantis is using taxpayer money to buy a swamp. As one of those taxpayers, it sure would have been nice to have been consulted first.

"Save" the land from oil production? From their past performance, the most deadly threat to land is management by the government. Whatever they manage quickly degrades and is ruined. Forests burn, grasslands turn to barren wastes, and rivers are allowed to flow to the sea while farmland dries up. Leave it to the government to ban productive uses of our lands, and keep the swamps and wastelands.

If government quit subsidizing sugar growers there would be more swampland available than they could use. Would clean up the drinking water problem too.

I couldn't find any producing wells near the Everglades there were several dry holes. The governor must be buying the land for some other reason.

The Everglades is a national treasure. De Santis is correct . You can drill in other areas where the economy of a whole state is not at risk. Florida is famous for it’s pristine beaches not for oily beaches!

Maybe if there is oil there Florida could use it to relieve the people of taxes, and whay worry about oily beaches. There are hundred of well drilled in the waters off Florida, if the beaches were going to be oily---they would be from those offshore sites..

As Prince Harry prepares to be reunited with his wife and son in Canada, the country's biggest newspaper has told them they are not welcome to live there. In a scathing editorial, The Globe and Mail said: 'Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal.' Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau tweeted before Christmas that Harry, Meghan and eight-month-old Archie 'were among friends, and always welcome here'. But yesterday the nation's most influential newspaper condemned the couple's 'vague and evolving plan to move to Canada while remaining part of the Royal Family', adding: 'The Trudeau government's response should be simple and succinct: No.'

The National Security Agency (NSA) is starting the year off on the right foot by alerting Microsoft to a flaw in its Windows 10 operating system, instead of secretly weaponizing it. The intelligence agency discovered 'an extraordinarily serious security vulnerability' that could spoof the digital signature of software that could trick a PC into letting malware in that is posing as a legitimate application. The bug was uncovered in NSA's own research and by disclosing this information to the tech giant, the agency believes it is putting 'computer security ahead' of its own agenda. The NSA came under fire five years ago for weaponizing a less sever flaw found in Microsoft's technology,

Rep. Jody Hice said the most crucial principle to remember about America is that here, in this country, individual rights come from God, not the government, and that deviating from this path leads to cultural degradation, Big Government, socialism and, ultimately, utter governmental and societal collapse. He’s right, you know. The Republican from Georgia nailed it. “The more we kick God out,” Hice said, in an interview with The Washington Times for the podcast “Bold and Blunt,” the more frequently, the more habitually — the more frustratingly — “we see more and more intrusive government at the same time.” Hello socialist Rep. Several witnesses who testified before House impeachment investigators said President Donald Trump ordered the hold on the critical military assistance.
