VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis apologized Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve.
The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media. A personal apology followed. “We lose patience many times,” Francis confessed. “It happens to me too. I apologize for the bad example given yesterday,” the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican.

The woman was wrong, she had waited in thatline to touich the Pope and he walked away just as he got to her, she grabbed his hadn and pulled him and threw him off balance. She was wrong.
But two wrongs don't make a right, and Francis was wrong too.

I think this must be a first. Not even the Borgia popes are reported to have slapped an admirer in public.

Apology not accepted, Frank. Your initial reaction to any surprise reveals your true feelings. You are not a real Pope.

"Usual Suspects"
The headline does not mention that the Pope slapped her HAND away. when she would not let go.
...and the story is from the Arab (Muslim) News.

It's unfortunate if it's just that some random overexcited woman clutched the Pope and jerked him back towards herself, and he vocalized the spontaneous equivalent of "Ow" and slapped her hand to make her let go. Unfortunate, irascible graceless, but not exactly damnable.
But it might be more than that. Some are saying she was urgently trying to get his attention because she's from China and she wants the Pope to protect the Chinese Catholic Church, which he has pretty much thrown to the wolves. If that was the case, and Pope Francis knew that, it makes things 10000 x worse.

Having a report from an Arab source exaggerate his reaction as "slapping devotee" (when Arab customs and laws approve of beating women) deserves a smirk and eye roll. And plenty of NeverFrancis folks (a sampling of whom hang out here) are happy to have another easy excuse to blast him.
There doesn't seem to be much room between the irrational admirers and irrational haters for this pope. Not that much of a Bergoglio fan, but give it a break.

Not exactly how the kosher Rabbi from Nazareth responded when the woman with the issue of blood, which made her ritually unclean (and forbidden to enter the temple, thus isolating her socially), touched the tzitzit on the kosher Rabbi's tallit. She "shouldn't have" done that, either. She contaminated him by this action and could have been stoned for doing so. Yet Jesus said her faith saved her, and she was healed. Jesus took on our contamination, our sin, on the cross.
The Pope comes nowhere close to the kosher Rabbi from Nazareth.

As pope, he should be adept at handling desperate people wanting to touch him. I imagine it is regular occurrence— and something JPII dealt with to a much greater extreme. (I saw him once at the Vatican. He was very old and I was just a teenager, but even I felt a pull towards him and half a football field away.)
Just as the Queen, President Trump and any number of extremely famous people who deal with large crowds are expected to be able to appropriately manage strange people, the Pope is too. His security failed, which is not good, and it may have hurt him or made him nervous. But his reaction was inappropriate (to put it mildly) and extremely unsettling.
Sometimes I find myself marveling at how we are witnesses to such a notable time in our vast church history.

The woman had no right to pull the Pope towards her like that. He's 83 years of age, and his arm tendons can be easily torn or sprained. Arm tendons that are torn can cause agonizing pain for months and months. The Pope seemed quite happy up to that point.

Maybe the slap is an omen of things to come for Francis: On Judgement Day maybe St. Peter will swat away the Pope's hand the same way when Francis tries to grab it on his way down to the Netherworld?

The Pope smacks a woman and then smacks her again for good measure and then gives the first mass speaking out against violence against women. He had to apologize so on one knows if it was heartfelt or not, so we assume the best. But isn't that what 80%+ women beaters say - they are sorry but she made me do it - I told her to let me go and she wouldn't so I smacked, but, hey, I hit her with an open hand, I didn't punch her, heck I didn't even hit that hard, she's just faking she's hurt to get me in trouble, I told her I was sorry. So now every woman beater will say - the Pope did it and he didn't get in trouble so kit must not be that bad.You know what they would have done if he was "just a man"? The just a ,man would have been arrested, locked up and condemned by everyone and attend anger management classes.
His behavior is unacceptable and his apology is weak. Did the crime, do the time.
Sorry about the rant.

I dont care if hes the pope or the garbage man. If you grab someone's arm and pull them, you are entirely in the wrong. His attempt to disengage the grip is justified. Lets not let our hatred for this guy cloud our perception of right and wrong. If we do, we are no better than the democrat/communists.

I think #35 response hit the nail on the dead. Pope Francis’ “angry” face might have been a pained expression which is understandable when an 83 year-old man is nearly yanked off his feet, and Francis made a very public apology for the incident. The pope-hating responses here to this story are pretty disturbing. St. Peter himself, the first pope, got very angry at the High Priest’s servant, and may have used angry, colorful language later that evening when accused of being one of the Nazorean’s followers.

* original report by AFP. Posted the Arab News news version since it has the video of the incident at the bottom of the article. On the one hand, the woman should not have grabbed his hand like that. On the other hand, the Pope's reaction was not one of patience or understanding. He could have said a few words to her instead of slapping her hand and walking away with a hateful scowl on his face. The guy is real piece of work.
