Stuck in Vatican elevator until rescue

Where's the pope? He's stuck in a Vatican elevator. Thousands of people who were gathered in St. Peter's Square for the traditional Sunday on-the-dot-of-noon appearance by Pope Francis were watching for the window of the Apostolic Palace to be thrown open so they could listen to the pope's remarks and receive his blessing. But after seven minutes, people were looking at each other quizzically: no pope? Then Francis popped out and answered their question: "First of all I must excuse myself for being late. I was blocked in an elevator for 25 minutes."

Was he going up or down?

"First of all I must excuse myself for being late” ??? I must assume when one is royalty one is expected to excuse oneself rather than ask forgiveness of those inconvenienced. Or something!

It’s surprising anyone missed him. They should have sent out Ferris Bueller to tell everyone it was over and to go home. Every time we pray for him at Mass, it think to myself, ...”and put a piece of duct tape over his mouth dear Jesus!” Pity, indeed!

CHICAGO: Qatar is investing billions of dollars in American universities, cash-hungry lobbyists in Washington, DC, journalists, mainstream activist groups and policy think tanks in an apparent drive to soften criticism of its activities that researchers focused on terrorism say fuels violent extremism. The researchers argue that these concerns should have led the discussion that President Donald Trump held with Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on July 9 at the White House. Though in the past Trump has criticized Qatar over its support for terrorism, this meeting focused only on economic issues.

The US has deployed F-22 stealth fighters to Qatar for the first time, its military said Friday, adding to a buildup of US forces in the Gulf amid tensions with Iran. The Air Force F-22 Raptor stealth fighters have been deployed "to defend American forces and interests," the US Air Forces Central Military Command said in a statement that did not specify how many of the hi-tech planes had been sent. It's hard to know what constituency Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke is targeting by dropping F-bombs all over the media landscape. Normally, I'd guess high school hipsters but they can't vote. Maybe Beto is trying to sound "working class" -- power to the effin' worker and all that. But let's face it, Beto doesn't look or sound "working class." He looks and sounds like a nerdy folk singer -- which is exactly what he was. All we know is that Beto has been using a naughty word for making love a lot these last 24 hours. Daily Beast: Former Texas representative and 2020 hopeful Beto O’Rourke railed

HBO producer and creator of The Wire David Simon lashed out on Twitter asking God to wipe out President Donald Trump’s club at Mar-a-Lago with Hurricane Dorian. “After the last three years, the work of a just and righteous God cannot be considered credible evidence of His goodness unless He picks all of Mar-a-lago up by the roots, sails it across half of Florida and heaves it on top of Doral and its every last bedbug,” David Simon wrote on Twitter. This is the left at work today in America — spewing hatred and racism while offering nothing. A black pastor is defending a hateful sign displayed outside his Birmingham, Alabama Baptist church saying, “God motivates me to take a stand for what’s right.” On one side, the church sign reads in bold letters: “A black vote for Trump is mental illness.” On the other side it reads, “A white vote for Trump is pure racism.” This unhinged leftist is a church pastor? Here are some of the quarterbacks with whom the Colts, now in search of a backup quarterback to Jacoby Brissett, have visited in the week since Andrew Luck shocked the football world by retiring: Brock Osweiler, such a crackerjack at the position that he once got released by the Browns after they’d traded for him because they liked DeShone Kizer better than they liked him. Matt Cassel, who is 37, who had his best year 11 years ago with the Patriots when Tom Brady got hurt, and whose last start was with the Titans two years.

A man wearing a traditional Middle Eastern tunic told a barista at a Starbucks in Philadelphia his name was "Aziz." The employee wrote "ISIS" on his cups. Niquel Johnson told NBC News that he was dressed in a thobe — an ankle-length, long sleeve garment — when he ordered three drinks, one for himself and the others for two friends he was with at a nearby store. When he was asked by a barista for a name for his order, Johnson said he gave his Muslim name, "Aziz." "Abdul Aziz is the name I normally go by; it means servant of the

A Swedish municipality that took in one of the highest numbers of asylum seekers per population faces a crisis as natives move out and decimate the local tax base. The municipality of Filipstad took in many asylum seekers during the migrant crisis of 2015 and now are facing increasing costs as unemployment among migrants has surged and financial assistance rates have tripled, broadcaster SVT reports. Claes Hultgren, the local municipal manager, described the situation, saying of the migrant population: "In this group, unemployment and dependency are very high, while education levels are very low. This group runs the risk of ending in an eternal alienation that is already

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has said that the rise of nationalist politics shows that lessons of the Second World War are being forgotten. The Labour politician made the intervention in a column for The Observer penned as Europe commemorates the 80th anniversary of the start of the Second World War. Mr Khan claimed that “for the first time in more than 70 years, it seems the lessons of the Second World War are genuinely at risk of being forgotten,” with far-right politicians bringing “appalling new parallels with the horrors of the past.” He wrote: “A new wave of extremist far-right movements and political parties are winning
Biden: Constitution Doesn't Say 'Anyone

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, said that U.S. Constitution does not allow "anyone" to own a weapon and does not give citizens the right to buy "any kind of weapon" they want because every amendment has limitations. Biden positioned himself as the only Democratic candidate who took on the National Rifle Association nationally and won, citing the temporary assault weapons ban that was passed when former President Bill Clinton was in office. It expired under former President George W. Bush and Congress did not renew it when former President Barack Obama was in office.

Netflix seems to be on a mission lately to alienate conservative subscribers. On top of their producing partnership with the Obamas, the streaming giant is now reportedly producing a show about one of the least interesting topics in the world: Hillary Clinton’s lifeless attempts to win the presidency. (Photo) The show will be based on the book “Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling,” which was authored by Amy Chozick. Netflix won the rights to the book in a pricey bidding war. Despite being based around Hillary Clinton, the story will reportedly not have the failed presidential candidate as its main character.

This week, Bishop Antonio Yao Shun was installed as Bishop of Jining in northern China. There are thousands of Catholic bishops, but Shun’s installment was a groundbreaking event. Bishop Shun was approved by both the Vatican and the Chinese government. In the past, the millions of Chinese Catholics have been divided between the state-sanctioned “Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association” and the underground and persecuted Catholic Church, which is loyal to the Vatican. Shun is the first bishop to be appointed since a deal was made in September of last year, which gave both the CCP and the Vatican a say in appointments. While the deal is said to be a compromise
We Need to Talk about Joe Biden 24 replies

There are two possible explanations of Joe Biden’s inability to tell the truth about things: One is that his mind is failing him, the other is that his honor is. In neither case is Biden fit to hold the office of president of the United States of America, and Democrats would discredit themselves and endanger the nation to nominate him. Yes, yes, go ahead — “But, Trump!” etc. — and continue when you’ve completed the ritual of equivocation, and don’t think too hard about how far and in what direction that line of moral self-justification has carried the Republican party. Joe Biden is a plagiarist and a liar, among other things.
