Trump Isn’t a Nazi. He’s a Failure.

Nancy Pelosi’s fecklessness has ensured that Americans understand impeachment to be a purely political matter, and as a purely political matter impeachment is as dead as your leftover Christmas turkey. Only a few days after the impeachment vote, President Donald Trump hit his best job-approval rating ever in the Quinnipiac poll. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is ready to slap the process around like a housecat tormenting a sparrow. The magic bullet missed, and now Democrats have to make a more ordinary case against Trump. The problem is: They don’t know how. The case against Trump in 2016 was that he is unfit for the office.

Kevin Williamson Isn’t a Writer. He’s a Frigging Imbecile. Lowest unemployment rate in years, especially among minorities. Highest holiday sales in years thanks to the tax cuts. And that wall would have been up already if not for histrionics by the Democrats (Taco Barbie beating the fence with her hands complaining about kids in cages-but there weren't any!). But even an imbecile like Kevin Williamson has to eat too, so if a rag like National Review prints inflammatory crap and they pay for it, he can order cheese with his whine.

Conservatives of good faith may have had legitimate reasons to oppose Donald Trump during the Republican primary. However, to continue opposing him after he secured the nomination was to help Hillary Clinton become President. Sensible conservatives would not have done that. They should have cut their losses, folded their Never Trump cards, and followed the Buckley Rule. Instead, Williamson and the rest of the Review Crew pushed all in on three bad bets. First, they expected Trump would fail to win the nomination. Then they expected him to lose the general. Lastly, they waited for President Trump to betray his conservative supporters once in office. They were wrong on all three and forfeited their credibility as a consequence. What intrigues me is why Kevin Williamson keeps doubling down on such a dumb bet. The easy answer is that he is an idiot. After all, he gets big things wrong, writes stupid, self-destructive articles, and appears to be incapable of learning from his mistakes. However, I don't think it's that simple. I no longer believe he is a good faith conservative. I think he is a guy who made his living pretending to be conservative, and Trump called his bluff. I think he keeps upping the ante on Never Trump because he can't afford not to. What use would we have for a professional conservative who professed so many erroneous opinions? Ask Stephen Hayes and the rest of the "formerly of" boys at their new venture into subscription-based, on-line Never Trumpism. Williamson's not a conservative. He is a failure. He failed to understand anything that mattered in 2016. He still refuses to understand President Trump or his supporters. And he continues to betray his claim to be a conservative by opposing the most conservative president since Reagan. Time to fold, Kevin.

The Chinese communist government increasingly poses an existential threat not just to its own 1.4 billion citizens but to the world at large. China is currently in a dangerously chaotic state. And why not, when a premodern authoritarian society leaps wildly into the brave new world of high-tech science in a single generation? The Chinese technological revolution is overseen by an Orwellian dictatorship. Predictably, the Chinese Communist Party has not developed the social, political or cultural infrastructure to ensure that its sophisticated industrial and biological research does not go rogue and become destructive to itself and to the billions of people who are on the importing end of Chinese products and protocols.

For years, Mitt Romney had a reputation as a flip-flopper, an opportunist, a politician who would tailor his beliefs to fit whichever group he was trying to please. Running for office in deep-blue Massachusetts in 1994 and 2002, he pronounced himself strongly pro-choice. Running for the Republican presidential nomination in pro-life Iowa and South Carolina, he became just as strongly pro-life. As governor of Massachusetts, he produced a universal healthcare program that prefigured Obamacare. Appealing to GOP voters deeply opposed to Obama, Romney renounced his signature accomplishment.

From early in our nation’s history, America’s intellectuals have mostly looked down on their own country and yearned for it to be like someplace else–someplace more sophisticated, and more in tune with “modern” intellectual currents, whatever they might be at the moment. That is a long history, which I will skip over. In our own time, American intellectuals have claimed that Soviet Russia, Germany and Japan were harbingers of the future that the U.S. needed to imitate. In each case, the point was that we had to shed our archaic freedoms and enter the brave new world of central planning under the control–benign, of course!–of intellectuals and bureaucrats.

The lessons presented were well worth the tens of thousands of dollars I had to pay for them. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred.
