SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Joe Fatula left the Bay Area in 2017 wanting to settle down in the mountains somewhere quiet. He chose Colfax, a small town rich with Gold Country history, and became mayor last year with the goal of boosting business on Main Street.
But his sanctuary turned apocalyptic in October. Every gas station, grocery store and restaurant closed due to massive power shutoffs as part of the state's efforts to avoid a major wildfire. The mayor found himself loaning out his personal pickup truck and RV, which have built-in generators, to the town's 2,000 residents as they scrambled to save food in their refrigerators,

Maybe in the fire-prone areas. Although there was really only one power shutoff in Northern California that disrupted things. That gave the media enough to chew on for a while until something else comes along. I don’t believe we’ll see a trend here...

The effect is over the border into Arizona. Questioning an APS worker, I was told they have been forced into using california guidelines as to repowering after a shutdown. Instead of coming back on in minutes after say a lightning event, it now takes routinely 3-4 hours while they check all of the affected lines. This is in the desert.

So the gov blames Creeping Climate Change and the power company for the problem. Just once before I depart this value of tears I'd like to hear a politician say that the problem is that I am a moron unfit to run a lemonade stand.

If they would just let PG&E bury the electrical cable and build/re-open a few hydro-electric sites, thin some of the their forests and let residents trim and thin their property, the problem would be solved-and for about as much as just one of these 'fire seasons'. But if you're waiting for Gaia to cheer up......

Power shutoffs as well as gun control laws are certainly changing my life. We're leaving after 72 years.

PG&E is Satan!
Those convicted felons KILLED innocent people!
Involuntary cremation!
Because they refused to maintain their refurbished equipment!
Gave that repair money to their top executives!
That’s why they owe BILLIONS in compensation to fire victims!
PG&E are the NAZI’S of utility companies!
They should be disbanded and incarcerated!
We lost our home and all of our earthly possessions!
Do you know what that did to us?
Running for our lives!
Worse than Vietnam!

I must totally disagree with #4. California's only hope is to appoint a commission to thoroughly study the resumes of potential members of a new commission made up of family members of various prominent California politicians. These highly paid commissioners will be tasked with writing and rewriting new expansive regulations governing all energy used by California residents. These regulations will go into effect 1/1/2035 and be enforced by a regulatory commission to be made up of descendants of the current commission. Remember, all problems can be cured with more taxpayer money and more government regulation.

I would agree with #6, except PG&E's spending on executive compensation instead of safer equipment was approved by the state PUC. They should be locked up too.

If you search the internet you can get a list of pre-2000 fires in California. There was one from the 1930s that killed 29 firefighters. Nobody around then blamed global warming. What we will see next are tornados. They will be hyped as the most devastating ever then the hurricane season with all big storms declared the worst of all time.
I do think that if I lived in the Cali black-out areas. I would invest in a good back-up generator. Expensive but probably worth it if you keep getting your power shut off.

I thought everyone in California had a windmill. Couldn't they just remove all powerplants and go green. It would at least save the planet.

Guess I'd better buy a generator to charge my Tesla so it's ready when the fires come back.

You know, if you wanted to get a bunch of unimportant people to sell their very beautiful, very marketable real estate that important people REALLY appreciate and understand that the land should be returned to its pristine state so that the moutain lions and California bears could live in harmony with said important people... this might be the way to do it.

Teslas are already coal powered. Gasoline would arguably be an improvement.

Reading the comments after the article was sad. These people don't seem to understand, California's greatest problem is democrats. Vote them all out of office and watch things change.
