Nine-year-old Lawrence “Buzz” Bailey and two neighbor kids ran excitedly toward a large balloon floating to earth on farmland in North Dorr, a rural community in Allegan County south of Grand Rapids. It was Feb. 23, 1945, and they didn’t realize they were discovering the remnants of a Japanese attack on the U.S. Bailey went on to serve in the U.S. Army in Germany in the early 1950s. "I tell the guys in the VFW post I'm a part of that I was in the Second World War at age 9," says Bailey, now 84 and living in Newaygo. "I was a balloon expert." November marks the 75th anniversary

Same as #1, I knew about their desperate balloon bombs but didn't know any made it as far east as Michigan. Seems like most came down in the Pacific NW and caused pretty much negligible damage, if any at all. Desperation, like their Seiran "bomber" which folded up and stored in a "hangar" on a special big sub. They could surface, open the hangar, roll out the aircraft, unfold the wings and lock them, and since the engine oil and coolant were linked to the sub's diesels, it was all warmed up already, and they could launch. Sounds menacing, but it carried IIRC two 500 lb bombs and a sub had only 3 aircraft. No harm to the US was done, even though they built two of these huge subs, and they were at sea on missions. They flushed a lot of resources down a ridiculous rat hole, just like the balloon bombs. The war ended before any mission was done. One Seiran is restored in the Air & Space Museum.

IIRC, a couple of these balloons started some forest fires in Oregon, and a Japanese sub shelled the coastline with its deck gun one time. Futile efforts of a dying empire, similar to a German SS Mountain company raising the swastika on a peak in the Caucasus and then getting back to the reality of the real fighting elsewhere. Pointless.

CNN reported Thursday evening that top Democrats are privately acknowledging that the impeachment hearings will do little to persuade the vast majority of the public that President Trump committed an impeachable offense. According to CNN, in a private meeting earlier this week, "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her top lieutenants were skeptical about the prospects of a dramatic shift in opinion even as public impeachment hearings began this week, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter." Nevertheless, they intend to carry on, in the hopes that things might change. Democrats have tried various shifts in narratives in order to find something that would stick,

Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified Friday that the Obama administration was so concerned about Hunter Biden’s job on Burisma’s board of directors that she was asked prep questions about the issue by White House staffers before her 2016 Senate confirmation. In response to questions from GOP counsel Stephen Castor, Yovanovitch testified at the House Intelligence Committee’s second public impeachment hearing that she had been informed about the lucrative gig Hunter Biden landed with the petroleum producer — which paid the son of then-Vice President Joe Biden as much as $50,000 a month despite his seeming lack of relevant experience —

The Trump administration is preparing to submit court filings as early as next week as a necessary step toward seizing private land in Texas for its wall on the border with Mexico, NBC reported Thursday. Administration officials still haven’t said how much the government will compensate affected landowners. “I still think we’re on track to get the land we need for 450 miles” of border wall, Acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Mark Morgan told reporters on Thursday. The government may file to appropriate the land in federal court in Texas under the Declaration of Taking Act, which would expedite the appropriation process.

A familiar sight during the holiday season is the iconic red kettle used by The Salvation Army for donations. Volunteers stand next to the kettle and ring a bell as passersby walk into grocery stores or retail stores. Who would protest when a British singer announced her agreement to partner with the international charity? The perpetually outraged Twitter mob, of course. Singer Ellie Goulding set off a firestorm on social media among LGBTQ activists when she posted the announcement of her collaboration with the Christian charity. She agreed to sing as the halftime act for the Dallas Cowboys – Buffalo Bills Thanksgiving Day game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled Thursday that Hoda Muthana, a US-born woman who left the country to join ISIS, is not an American citizen, and therefore the government has no obligation to facilitate her return — or that of her 2-year-old son. Judge Reggie Walton said there was sufficient evidence that Muthana had been born while her father, who once represented Yemen in the United Nations, still had diplomatic status in the US. Federal regulations and international law state that children of foreign diplomats born in the US are not subject to the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees birthright citizenship, because they are born

Former rivals Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke joined mounting calls from Texas politicians urging Governor Abbott to halt Reed’s execution in light of new evidence and witnesses who can corroborate some of Reed’s claims. It has been apparent for weeks, but on Wednesday it will become official: Julián Castro will not qualify for the November debate stage. It’s a sobering reality for an already struggling campaign. Last week, the Democratic former San Antonio mayor’s team slashed staff in two early states. Last month, he threatened to end his White House bid if he didn’t raise $800,000 in the final 10 days of October — a goal he narrowly hit. His campaign insists he’s not exiting the race now, but staying afloat with months to go before February’s Iowa caucus will be a tall task.

To mark its birthday, the Marine Corps has created its first ever birthday running cadence, honoring Marine history and celebrating 244 years of service by Marines past and present. While the cadence doesn’t inspire making the grass grow or running to Iraq in one day, it is full of imagery that will be familiar to all Marines. The new cadence has three distinct parts: The first covers the founding of the Corps and the esprit de corps derived from the service’s fighting record. “There comes a day in every year ... of pride we shed a tear,” the cadence goes. “In 10 November when it began...

Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s much anticipated report on his investigation into the FBI’s probe into President Trump’s campaign is expected to be made public before Thanksgiving and the outcome is alleged to contain several criminal referrals, according to sources who spoke with SaraACarter.com. Horowitz’s investigation on the bureau’s probe into the now debunked theory that Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 presidential election will more than likely result in the declassification of documents — requested by senior Republican lawmakers for more than several years. By most everyone’s judgment, the Senate will not vote to remove President Donald Trump from office if the House impeaches him. But what if senators could vote on impeachment by secret ballot?
