A California board voted to enact tougher energy efficiency standards for lightbulbs, pushing back against a rollback from the Trump administration.
A new rule from the Department of Energy (DOE) eliminates energy efficiency standards for half the bulbs on the market, a move critics say will make the U.S. a dumping ground for energy-sucking, cost-ineffective bulbs.
The vote from the California Energy Commission essentially bars sales of incandescent and halogen bulbs by adopting stronger energy efficiency standards. The state banned the sale of such pear-shaped bulbs in 2018, but the rule will now extend to all other shapes of bulbs —

Ii think it's wonderful that California doesn't have more important issues to deal with! It makes the job of legislators much more fun when they can deal only with things they are personally interested in...

There are fixtures for which there are no led bulbs that fit. If I still lived in CA my stock of “bad” bulbs might pay for some nice dinners. Thankfully for Californians there is Amazon.

You are correct, #2. And we were told that we would save 8 gazillion barrels of oil by switching to light bulbs that are biohazard risks, if broken.
We are slow learners.

If there were any real comedians left. Instead of self loathing humorless Trump haters. A California standup bit would write itself!
“Higher Standards Than The Rest Of Us”LOL
That’s Exactly what we think when CA deems public peeing and pooping and solicitation as A-OK.

I’m so sick of California. Lived here for 69 years and I’m ready to pack it up and bust out of here. The land of stupid idiots and illegal aliens. Can’t stand it any longer.

If Trump issued a regulation mandating milk for infants, California woul A: contest it in court, B: pass legislation mandating soy.
I swear, California seems to have a knee jerk reaction to anything a republican president attempts and do the exact opposite. The entire state government is just contrarian.

I intensely resent being told what light bulbs to use. Also being told that I cannot use plastic grocery bags, what I cannot say, what I cannot think, what soap to use in my dishwasher, what car to drive, that I cannot use straws..… on and on and on. Liberal do-gooder, busy-body loons don't give up on controlling ever aspect of our lives.

Hey, they don't even have reliable electricity in California, who cares about bulbs?
LOL! I have a lifetime supply of normal light bulbs, a literal closet full, purchased on sale at about $0.59 each. I have a few LEDs where they make sense, like in my solar powered cabin, or where the bulbs are really inconvenient to change like at the top of the cathedral ceiling, but mostly normal incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, like kitchen and workshop has long tubes to light large work areas.
More Cali insanity, more Trump sanity.
MAGA!

Not only are the curly bulbs hazardous, the light they produce is awful. I’m a professional hand embroiderer and those bulbs are useless if you actually need to be able to see something.
I honestly don’t understand why anyone with a functioning brain stays in Kalifornia.

I'd love it if oil companies decided to stop selling gas to California because of the special blend(s) of gasoline they mandate.

Hmm. #14, not very realistic, who in the world actually runs all their lights 24/7?
A more sane calculation would be that each bulb probably runs 3-5 hours a day, or less. Say 5 hrs per day, times 365 days per year is 1825 hours per year. So, 675 watts gives you 1,232 Kwatt-hrs per year used. In Kansas we pay about 10.5 cents per Kw-hr, so that would be $129 per year. That is a touch over $10 a month. I'm perfectly OK with that. Even at California electricity rates of 17.4 cents/Kw-hr, (yikes, 70% higher than Kansas!) that is under $18 a month.
And LED bulbs have very 'notchy' spectrums of light, and cause many people problems. Not going to go into a detailed tech explanation, but each LED produces an extremely narrow color band, and they put a number of different color LEDs together to try to approximate the smooth spectrum of all colors that sunlight or an incandescent bulb produces, and we see as "white light". But huge chunks of the spectrum are missing in LED bulbs. Many people don't seem to be bothered by this unnatural, patchwork, notchy spectrum light, but a lot of people see it as "weird light", "odd light". Because it is.
I use LED bulbs where I have a very limited power supply at my solar powered remote cabin, used to use all fluorescents, and I save about 15% electricity with the LEDs. But at home, with mains power available at reasonable rates, I prefer normal light, incandescents or long tube fluorescents.
The LEDs do save some money, and if that savings pleases someone, they should CHOOSE to buy them. But we should NOT be forced to buy ANY product, ever. I object to the totalitarian force issue far more than I do to the bulbs themselves.

It's not about the relative merits of different types of light bulbs. It's about you being able to use what you want rather than what the government wants. I like playing with new stuff. But the curly que bulbs aren't bright, produce a strange light, are expensive, and unreliable.

Californians elect their wacky politicians, so they can live with their wacky ideas. But I dread the day that the Socialist State of California will come whining to the federal government for a trillion dollars to bail them out of bankruptcy caused by all their foolishness.

I bought a whole cabinet full of incandescent bulbs when they started banning them. The compact flourescents hurt my eyes over time. Then I found the yellowish leds. No I have migrated over to mostly them. Far less heat, the light seems just as good and they last a lot longer. But I do agree with the other posters. It should be my choice.

Why does California need a light bulb standard. The state keeps turning off the power.

As I said, #18, if you like them, and want them, I do not criticize or object. And you make a good case that there is a monetary savings. I would point out that LED bulbs very recently cost ~$25 each. And I do use them where electricity is limited in my solar powered cabin, where long life is particularly valued.
But I insist that the damned econazis not force me to buy any product because THEY think it is best, whether I want it or not.

Other than this is the typical push back by Kalifornia of all things President Trump has the right to declare, it seems ironic why they claim to do it. The modern day Luddites, socialist pigs who want to wallow in slop, call them "energy-sucking, cost-ineffective bulbs". Why should they care with all the green energy they report to produce. They shouldn't be hooked into the grid. BTW, I have never once bought to use one of those curly fry looking light bulbs here in Texas.
