When I was a kid growing up in New York, California beckoned as an idyllic place of beaches, wine, wildflowers, and beautiful people. It was the land of “good vibrations,” “surfer girls,” and little “deuce coupes.”
I distinctly recall watching the Rose Parade from a cold couch in the winter of 1978, wondering where on Earth they had gotten all those flowers. Years later, after driving cross country in my 1992 Suzuki Samurai, I sat atop a sand dune in Malibu and thought I had reached paradise.
I took in the natural wonders of California like air: Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Redwood Park, Death Valley, Half Dome, Monterey, Napa, China Beach.

Progressive democrats destroy everything they touch. They are so corrupt that they believe that taxpayer money is theirs to spend or steal The needs or wishes of their constituents mean nothing as long as they can line their pockets and hold on to their power. What the democrats have done to California is their strategy for the rest of the country. You can see it creep into our big cities as we witness their descent into a Mad Max world where anarchy reigns. The rest of us want nothing to do with it and we certainly do not want out tax dollars going to bail these awful places out. When you feed the beast of lawless corruption it will eventually devour you. Welcome to Hotel California, indeed.

I lived in Los Angeles in the 90's, and I understood exactly what Dan Quail ment when he said "closet republicans". He was mocked for it. I was labled a racist for supporting legislation to deprive illegal aliens state funding. I was labled an extremist for being pro-life and a nazi for not buying into dame sex marriage.
Between the wild fires, earthquakes, dive by shootings, gangs, illegal aliens, high cost of living, taxes, regulations, air quality and the states politics, one home invasion, several vehicle break ins, vadalism and graffiti, I couldnt leave fast enough. I never felt safe, even in my own home and I had to watch everything I said. I lived in a city where even the police chief was denied a concealed carry permit.

I think a more fitting epitaph for the State of California is the final track on the Hotel California album. It's called "The Last Resort." The final verse:
They called it paradise
I don't know why
You call some place paradise
Kiss it goodbye

We're still in, yet out. Twenty years ago we moved to our bastion of sanity; 40 acres inside a private wildlife preserve, gated subdivision of 6,000 acres in the wilds of Mendocino County. It takes 10 minutes to get to Hwy 101 with a good-sized town (pop 5,000) twenty minutes south, or a smaller town (pop 1,500) ten minutes north. We have solar inter-tie with PG&E on private lines, generator back-up (and a back-up generator) that is connected to our propane tank so we're not dependent on gasoline. We also store 40 gallons for use in our vehicles. Everyone around here has "blackout" stories from last week. We have our own well and water system, and septic system. We have long-term food and water storage in the house, the workshop and the cabin. We are active NRA members. TK has done everything to make sure we can hunker down when needed.
Twenty-six years ago we decided to stick it out in California and purposely bought our property. We will ride out the storm and be ready for the rebuilding. The commie's are going to lose California because their are millions, like me, who will not give them our birthright.
MAGA - Its for all 50 states.

This article is a Must Read. We love visiting California every chance we get. We have traveled its length and breadth multiple times for many years. Each time we head back home to flyover country, we remark how thankful we are to have grown up in the Midwest. The decline of this enormously beautiful state is nothing short of a travesty.

“...residents are checking out and leaving en masse — to Arizona, Nevada, and Texas to escape high taxes, unsafe neighborhoods, failing schools, a wall of debt, a pension crisis, and a political ruling class that has neither the guts nor the will to effect change.”
And then they inflict their political idiocy on their new states.

P.S. I grieve for my hometown of Los Angeles. I pity my fellow citizens stuck in the cities. It was after the Rodney King riot that we decided to buy property and get out of LA. We saw the writing on the wall. Its just all so sad. LA was a great place to grow up in the 50-60-70's.

We will not leave California because of Liberals any more than we would leave our Country, America, because of Liberals. We have chosen to stay and fight. There are plenty of Conservative areas to live in California. For us,the Klamath River is across the road. Elk Creek is a short walk down the street. We are surrounded with the Siskiyou Mountains. Hiking trails are numerous and lead to untold beauty. No traffic signals within 60 miles. We have a grocery store, gas station, post office, two restaurants, six churches and no bar. Folks, keep your priorities straight, God, Family, Country, and life can be awesome no matter where you live.

Outstanding article. Brought back still vibrant memories of growing up in California when it was still paradise, and nailed the list of reasons why we now finally moved out.
#7,I wish you and TK the best of luck, but I'm not sure you can out-hunker a tsunami. Even in Mendocino. The Democrats have not just opened the floodgates, but have cranked up the wave machine. NO place in California (or eventually the entire US) is safe any more.
I am now sadly convinced that it's going to take more than just an election to stop what the evil Democrats have unleashed on this great country.

What the leftoid democRAT progressive liberal communists have done to kalifornia they want to do to the rest of the country. I am on the downhill side, however, I feel for the coming generation of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If we don't wake up very soon, it's all over for America.

Sad story but like many other people and places that can officially be named tragedies, California will have to hit rock bottom before any hope of recovery can take place. They aren't quite there yet but the fat lady is warming up for her song.

Born in Cali, left long ago, still visit about once a year, sometimes skip a year. Each trip back is sadder and madder than the last, seeing and experiencing what has become of a formerly great state. SO, SO sick of the damned Mexicans everywhere, and then the leftist insanity slopping over all of it. Lots of beautiful country still, but too many crazy people. Always happy to leave and go back to Kansas.
Flying home during the King riots, looking down and counting over 60 individual fires along the edge of the huge dark brown smoke column rising from many, many square miles of LA.....I was never happier to be leaving a place. Being on the ground with only 15 rounds of ammo was not a good feeling.
