President Donald Trump called former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis “the world’s most overrated general” during a tense White House meeting Wednesday with lawmakers over the growing Syria/Turkey conflict, according to sources familiar with the meeting.
The incident wasn’t the first time Trump has attacked the popular former Marine Corps general, once one of his most highly praised Cabinet officials. But since Mattis announced his resignation from the top Defense Department job last December, the president’s view of Mattis has increasingly soured.

Generals want war... Trump does not. Commander in Chief wins... Ask MacArthur.

He can criticize other politicians, but when he starts criticizing military--particularly with no service record of his own--he is out on a lonely limb. He makes it tough for himself.

The phrase “according to sources...” is peppered throughout this article. The author quotes Chuck you Schumer about the meeting, another red flag.
As we have seen over the past two years, stories like these are either misquoted, taken out of context are made up out of whole cloth. Take with a grain of salt.

Gen. Mattis is the most revered General in the Marine Corps. A war hero, a selfless leader. Trump knows this. I can't believe he would say this. If he did, he has lost my support. Yes, I am a US Marine veteran.

Mattis is a "legend in his own time," ask the Special Forces team he refused to commit, because he was fearful of his marine corpse.

Having a service record or not is irrelevant. As CINC he can make the call. And BTW, he wasn’t criticizing the military. He respects and values our troops, an individual leader is a different matter. Truman was an artillery battery commander-a Captain- so that means he couldn’t make a decision to relieve a five-star? When generals are functioning or not in the stratosphere of the military I’ll never understand why some are held sacrosanct and given free reign to muck things up.

Sorry, but there have been very few "great" Marine Generals, and fewer yet who can handle anything larger than a Division. The Marine Corps gets the tidbits that fall off the Navy's table as their funding. As a result Logistics and Program Management are not their strong points.

What has happened to honorable Marines? He's no longer in command and he's not CnC, so Mattis should keep his mouth shut and be respected. Marine wife here, so I get to talk about family.

Trump probably did say it, because that's how he talks. It's just a toss-off, making the point that Mattis might not be as wise and all-knowing as he's made out to be. If nothing else, his tenure on the Theranos board of directors would support this view. There are worse insults than "overrated".
Trump was frustrated because Mattis did not support his strategy of quick decisive action followed by disengagement, and has lately been trotted out to (politely) buttress the argument that we have fecklessly abandoned our Kurdish allies, and you really need allies. It's a point of view, and you can see how it appeals to an honorable man with the background and connections that Mattis has, but I think Trump has the much stronger argument.

I have four Marines that I am close to, two officers and two enlisted, although one was KIA, so can't ask him.
The only general that they ever spoke highly of was Chesty Puller, never Mattis.
