Painted Bunting-
The beautifully colored painted bunting can be found in the Gulf Coast of the U.S. and between North Carolina and northern parts of Florida. Only males exhibit the smattering of vibrant rainbow colors on their feathers while females and immature males are a medium green.
For the most part, these little guys are ground foragers but will occasionally nibble at bird feeders. During mating season, males will take to consuming insects in addition to seeds as they prepare to search for a mate.
Nutria-
These semi-aquatic rodents (also known as coypu's) were introduced to the U.S. by fur farmers who had no idea the havoc the creatures

Several are invasive species brought in, mostly to Fla. The gemsbok (orxy) is a fine game animal, good eating, too. They need to offer more hunting permits at White Sands, they currently have limited hunting, need to increase it.
As to the Nile Crocs, kill every darned one of them. Invasive and aggressive species that needs to be eliminated.
I have lived and run bird feeders in N. Central Fla, and family is still there. I have never seen a single painted bunting.

Me neither, #5, and I've watched for one all my life. However, the backsplash tiles in our kitchen feature hand-painted birds and wildflowers of Texas. One of the birds is a gorgeous painted bunting.

I used to live in North Central Oklahoma and would see Painted and Indigo Buntings occasionally. They never came to the bird feeder. Never saw them on the ground, only in the trees and on the electrical lines.

We have a Painted Bunting come around, they're really cool, and way further south than NFLA.
So Nile Crocs kill 24 Americans every year? Really? Name one.

I saw a Painted Bunting once, at my backyard birdfeeder! I didn't know what it was, but it's color was striking. I later described it to my boss, and he told me it was a Painted Bunting. I thought it was a tropical bird of some sort, due to it's vibrant colors. So then, I looked it up in a bird book, and that's exactly what it was. And, I live in Nebraska. I've never seen once since, but I know a few people who have also seen them. Thanks, OP!

I had driven from Texas and Arkansas to california three times a year for years. A highlight of my trips was to see the gemsboks at a certain point of land each trip. A big buck was always on lookout on the tip of that point watching over his harem down in a shallow gorge near the highway. His twin antlers were often aligned to appear as a unicorn. I had seen this herd many times then they disappeared and I have not seen them for several years.
I often asked the natives what they were and the answer was always "I dunno." Many times I searched for information and finally found basically what is stated here. They can live on very little water getting sufficient from the plant life. They are gorgeous and I always looked for them.
Just a tidbit about a herd of bison that we always saw across a huge expanse of grassland that stretched to a low range of mountains in Arizona. I have stopped to count about a hundred of these beasts. Then some years ago, No Bison. That vast expanse of grassland is covered with hundreds of houses.
Our wildlife needs to be protected.

Never seen them. Been here several decades. People want exotic pets, realize they are time consuming and release them.

The painted bunting is beautiful. First time in my life I have a bird feeder in my yard. All we get are sparrows but now and then I see a Cardinal or Blue Jay. I'd love to see the painted bunting. As for sparrows, those little guys attack each other if they want the feeder stand another is on. It's hilarious to watch them fight and try to knock the other guy off. Who knew Cotamundi (sp) were in the US. Great reading.
