The great triumph of recent American politics is for the people of your fine country to have elected as president a man who is the precise embodiment of what supercilious Europeans think Americans are really like. Pig-ignorant, arrogant, jingoistic, contemptuous of foreigners, loud-mouthed, badly dressed and irredeemably bumptious. So consuming is the European antipathy toward Donald Trump — he’s never read a book! He eats steak with ketchup! — that it afflicts leading politicians across our continent, people who would be better advised to button it a while and show a little bit of diplomacy to the leader of the free world. But they can’t: the contempt always bleeds through.

PS. As someone who has travelled a fair amount of Europe and known Europeans (including Brits) in fairly high places, that “description” of our President is so far off the mark it is pathetic. Beyond supercilious. Europeans know that, was it not for Americans, they would ALL be speaking German about now. Or worse yet, Russian. They consider our patriotism to be jingoism because they have little when it comes to their own countries. We are upstarts who not only took off, at great peril to those who had the courage to do so, and founded a brand new nation, conceived in liberty. You can stop right there, as they don’t know that. Their nations were all monarchies. Forget about liberty.
To make matters worse, we upstarts succeeded. Then we became such a strong nation that we were able to take care of other nations - some even former enemies.
Europeans don’t have TDS. They have AMS. Always have had. The Brits even envy our strong “American teeth”… A highly placed Brit banker friend (HSBC) said that the IMF is American money. He knew because he attended IMF meetings.
Look at them. May, Macron, Merkel, the list goes on. Envy. Jealousy. How dare we…. But dare we did and dare we will continue to do.
I have a zero humility hunch that if our courageous President reads my Reply, he will disregard their supercilious schoolyard taunts and nod his head approvingly. Having seen what he is - a real patriot - I could vote for him for as long as I live. The other Republicans all look like midgets by comparison. And to the supercilious among us, and there are a few here at L.Com, I am no cultist, never have been. Just recognize the real deal when I see it.

The author needs to be reminded that we defeated England and started our nation in direct defiance of what he is claiming is “euro normal”, then, when they did not accept their defeat, we had to fight them again in 1812. After soundly handing them their weak....hineys .....we then had to bail his nation out during 2 world wars. Note to Rod Liddle: think big.

PS. When I see a piece like this (which I didn’t bother to read) I am curious to know who wrote it. Liddle is a counter-culture type who looks like a drag queen version of Theresa May as a slob. Homely as a mud fence. The description of PDJT that he gratuitously tucked in as the opinion of supercilious Europeans could very well be applied to him. He covers his ignorance with a penchant for shockjockism. He does look like a pig, though.

I spent two weeks in England very recently, and had a good time. But it is a jammed and fading place, kind of sad to see. So few "Brits" in London now, probably about 2530% of the people you see on the tube had a relative in England during WW2.
Interesting to visit, but terribly glad we sent them packing in 1776 and the years thereafter.
As for Trump, I don't buy the rude adjectives that the author applies to the President, or most Americans.

Some of the posters are missing Liddle's point. He wasn't making fun of Trump but the supercilious Europeans who despise him. This is hilarious. Please take the time to read it carefully. It's a real put-down of European 'elites'.

I have had very little sympathy for the Brits since they voluntarily became Britanistan but receiving their own version of Barack Obama was not a deserved curse. The writer cleverly but pleadingly asks us to take her back. Nope, once you accept the touch of the vampire it's all on you.

"...liberal narcissism dressed up as compassion," and "...leftish and repulsive political grandstanding by people who are as rich as Croesus" we are very familiar with. The left and the elite constantly lecturing us on our boorish and racist behavior, how deplorable we are, with our God and our guns. We should all give up our God and our guns, submit to the progressive state, and sacrifice our children to the worship of Moloch.
We supposedly don't have a monarchy in America, but some are obviously above the law and continue to walk around free.
Sounds like Harry and Meghan have become firmly controlled, and now have clinton and hussein handlers to guide them along the right (leftist) path.
I wouldn't mind if England became a Republic, rather than a parliamentary monarchy, but hope it never (God forbid) becomes a democracy. The demos are already (as in America) running wild in the streets.

You Brits are so ignorant. Obama's momma was 100% white and you were happy to call him black. Meghan's poppa is 100% white and you call her black. Now you have elected a muslim mayor in London and allowed this murderous gang to to begin conquering England.
Manny years ago at a prize fight in Las Vegas, I witnessed 6,000 Brits boo and disrespect the U.S. Star Spangle Banner for five minutes. I predicted destruction for your country. And I ani't very smart!!!

For those who believe we misunderstood Liddle, no. We didn’t. But perhaps they haven’t noticed how many licks these writers get in against our President and against us as they are going after little fish like Meghan Markle. I would not change a word of what I wrote, nor do I imagine the others would either.
I am sick of articles on dumb little subjects’ being used as Trojan horses to carry in a lot of nastiness toward our President and toward us. My experience with people like Liddle and with his Europeans tells me I am right.

People. It is better to read a whole article before commenting on it. Writer of this article only quoting what people, including Megan say about Trump. Recall the Queen would not let her come to the state dinner for the Trumps. Writer said every time some thing bad about Trump was posted, more people go to the voting booth to vote for him. The writer then ended by saying he hoped Trump would win.

Thank you #13 and #20, and all other posters who actually "got" what Mr. Liddle was trying to convey. I have the benefit of having lived in England for 6 years, so I can understand the dry humor. To wit: "...although there may be some faded, fusty glamour attached to the British royal family, like a slightly foxed first edition smelling faintly of corgi urine..."
Brilliant! I must read more from this man.

I thought he pegged Markle perfectly. However, you gotta admire a gal who can hook a Prince and a wedding ring.

Not sure Nutmeg's lawsuit will fly. Once her father received her letter it becomes his property does it not? It is my understanding that he gave the newspaper Nutmeg's letter although I'm not quite sure why he would want to do that.
The Brits are probably thanking their lucky stars that Harry is not the older son. And no....... we do not want her back!!

Markle gave a copy of The Letter to five friends to give to People Mag. After People Mag printed it, The Daily Mail then contacted her father for his side, and he then gave a copy of the letter to the Mail. She and the dimwit are now saying the Mail didn't print the letter in its entirety which the Mail denies saying the full letter was printed.
It is reported they followed the advise of their recently hired former Clinton PR operatives and didn't discuss w/the Queen, Charles or William prior to filing.
Why they're bringing this up now when it had been forgotten is yet to be revealed.
