A Florida grandmother claims her 6-year-old granddaughter was arrested by a resource officer after throwing a temper tantrum at school — which she says happened because the child suffers from sleep apnea.
Meralyn Kirkland says the child, Kaia Rolle, was acting out at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy, a charter school in Orlando, as a result of lack of sleep. The 6-year-old was then brought to the principal's office. Kirkland told WKMG-TV that while there, a school staff employee grabbed Kaia's wrists, sparking her to lash out and kick her legs. The school resource officer — Officer Dennis Turner, of the Orlando Police Department —

Why is this news? A local story about a kid who has problems. A school resource officer who is probably sick of dealing with these people’s problem children.
Not worth our time.

A story where everyone but the child is at fault. I hope the officer is fired, but I hope the child's family situation is fully investigated.

There are differences between pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and adult sleep apnea. While adults usually have daytime sleepiness, children are more likely to have behavioral problems. The underlying cause in adults is often obesity, while in children the most common underlying condition is enlargement of the adenoids and tonsils.
Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications that can affect children's growth, cognitive development and behavior.

So she has a medical problem. She is six years old. Did it take this long for her “family” to get her treatment, or did it take her arrest to get them moving?

fta: Turner also reportedly arrested an 8-year-old that day in a separate incident on Thursday, according to WKMG. Baker told the news outlet Turner did not request permission for that child's arrest, either. Authorities said an internal investigation is ongoing.
A 6 and 8 year old arrested by the same officer on the same day? Not making excuses for bad behavior but since when is arrest the preferred method of discipline instead of maybe calling a parent or guardian into the principal's office. I know times have changed and momma or grandmomma may not be responsible parents but I fail to see the benefit in wasting tax payer money on these silly arrests and processing of literal children.

I'm going to guess that the school resource officer was white and was sick and tired of dealing with mouthy little Amish kids that have no respect for anything.

A six year old assaulting someone at school and people are outraged that she's taken to juvey? Cheez-n-crackers.
I got a paddling in 3rd grade for accepting the dare to draw a picture of the school principal, Mr. Bernard, churning the butter with my homeroom teacher, Miss Kuhlman. That one paddling put an end to my discipline problems. Just sayin' . . .

A rotten brat violent kid, getting treated like a rotten brat violent kid. Maybe, just MAYBE she will learn to not physically attack others. Another example of a violent subculture. And now with excuses.....sleep apnea? Right, yeah, sure. Not buying that BS for even one second.

There are presumably 25 other kids in the class and have been disrupted by one undisciplined girl, Kaia.
Multiply that by several occasions a day in some schools and I can understand the cop's frustration with trying to stop it.
For those who think the officer should be fired; who do you think would benefit by his removal? Obviously not the cop or his family, nor the other children in the class, but the undisciplined girl and the kids who would act up later because nobody did 'nuffin' to them.

I know you anti-Catholics will disagree, but here goes. There's a reason why young children, even babies, should be baptized. Huge segments of society don't. Also, it took multiple generations of Europeans being baptized and given minor exorcisms upon entering Mass before pagan demons were removed. A certain segment of society never had this, lacking Catholic ancestors and Traditions. Those pagan and demonic influences remain. Just sayin'.

I'm sure that "resource officer" was in the school by popular demand to provide law and order in a new public charter school that is tuition-free with students in grades K-5. The school describes its academic focus "to provide students with a rigorous academic experience based on the Florida Standards, while also placing a strong emphasis on the integration of S.T.E.A.M. education."
Cops in elementary schools? Really? Arresting kids? You asked for it, America. The hammer met the nail, twice.

There is something terribly wrong in the world when we are arresting six-year-olds.

Go ahead and keep arresting infants; it beats killing them in the delivery room. That said, whatever happened to the policy of Spock Them, don't Spank Them? (It didn't work any better than my mom and dad tanning my britches), but I only got one or two 'whuppin's'

There is no excuse for arresting a six year old. I actually think the child was right to kick the adult who grabbed her by the wrists, if that is what happened.

There is something wrong, #14, and it’s the breakdown of families. This kid has maybe been in school for a year out of her 6 years. The people raising her have spent far more time with her than the schools and the police, who arrested her, yet some want them to get the blame. Unbelievable.

Most schools in FL have community resource officers. The real problem is she is spoiled, probably stays up late, and sent to school insisting teachers raise these kids. The officer was suppose to call the commanding officer to the school. He has been suspended and will probably lose his job. I would not want to trade jobs with these officers. These kids disrespect not only the teachers and staff, but anybody available.
Grandma will sue.
