Paris - The team behind teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg's yacht voyage to New York on Sunday fended off claims that her trip will create carbon emissions because team members will take transatlantic flights. The 16-year-old Swede, whose school strikes have inspired children across the world to protest against global warming, refuses to fly because of the carbon emissions caused by planes. But she has been offered a lift on the Malizia II racing yacht, and set off on August 15 along with her father Svante and a filmmaker to document the journey, in order to attend the UN talks in

HARTFORD, Conn. — When University of Connecticut professor Thomas Craemer first began researching reparations for slavery, most mainstream white politicians weren’t talking about the issue. Now, more than a dozen years later, the idea that African Americans should receive restitution for the grievous legacy of enslavement and racial discrimination is sparking a political debate that is helping to shape the 2020 presidential race. “I’m surprised by this myself,” said Craemer, an expert on racial bias and a professor of public policy at the University of Connecticut in Hartford. At the most recent Democratic presidential debate in July, several candidates expressed

ON A LEVEE IN THE EVERGLADES — Beth Koehler stood on the Jeep’s console, her boots braced against the two front seats, half her body thrust through the sunroof. As the Jeep crept along a narrow gravel road atop a levee 60 miles west of Miami, Koehler’s eyes swept the landscape. Lights atop the car turned the darkness ahead as bright as day.
She had been at this for more than two hours Monday, and now it was nearly midnight. The humid night air was filled with a subdued chorus of hoots and ribbets.
Suddenly Koehler, 60, shouted, “Go forward!” Behind the wheel,

We conservatives tend to argue that “green” energy (wind and solar) is unreliable, inefficient, expensive, and virtually useless, even if we accept the climate change gospel*. But the truth is worse than that. Far from being well-intentioned, as most assume, “green” energy is the great corporate scam of our age. And green energy is not kind to the Earth as school children are taught. Rather, wind and solar are terrible for the environment.
It is time to get tough on “green” energy. I wrote about some of the environmental drawbacks of solar energy here. To perhaps an even greater degree than solar energy, wind turbines also damage the environment.

National Economic Council Chairman Larry Kudlow appears on NBC with Chuck Todd to debate the issues surrounding current trade and economic policy. (Snip) Kudlow makes two important points:
1. The Q3 CapEx (capital expenditure) spending reflects a domestic energy sector investment pause related to the dropped cost of oil. A fluctuation related to extraction costs and projected finished product price. [Energy companies pause on low price ] 2. The Sept. “Next Step” tariff delay relates to pre-contracted prices of holiday goods with the import price attached to lower dollar value at the time of contract. If you grew up in the 1970s, it was hard to escape Charles Manson. His gang’s grisly 1969 deeds were already legendary, and they left a lingering dread over middle-class America, to say nothing of Hollywood and other more privileged enclaves. The early and mid-seventies retained some trappings of sixties culture, and the climate that had fostered the Manson Family, or that Manson had used to foster it, seemed still operative. Older Americans, trying to exhale after the sixties’ Olympian paces, found themselves bewildered in a new, hungover decade that made not even a pretense of restoring the old verities.

Once upon a time in a universe far far away, the New York Times was known as "the newspaper of record." They purported to report "All the News That's Fit to Print." That was never true — like all such outlets it was written by humans, ergo biased — but it was a tiny bit more accurate than today, even with notorious contributors like Stalin-apologist Walter Duranty and Castro-apologist Herbert Matthews. The late Abe Rosenthal at least made an effort.
Now the paper is little more than a left-wing propaganda sheet — and not a very good one, notwithstanding its seemingly unbreakable and unremitting influence on the mainstream media

Taiwan-mainland China relations (also known as Cross-Strait relations) have been always complex and controversial. As Hong Kong unrest and China trade ties dominate the news, how the U.S. is dealing with Taiwan is worth a close look, too, given President Trump's muscular stance with China. And the news is good.
In 1949, as a result of a civil war, China was split into two entities: mainland China (People’s Republic of China/PRC) and Taiwan (Republic of China/ROC). The civil war merely stopped without the formal signing of any peace treaty and the two sides are technically still in a state of war.

Some months ago, I responded rationally (I hope) to a particularly snotty, generalized put-down of Trump supporters, the kind of thing you see posted all too often on otherwise informative discussion forums like Quora. Every day, it seems, both here and elsewhere, one or more individuals (always under assumed names) will post “honest questions” for comment. Like “Does anyone know why only cretins support Donald Trump?” The aim is to take out, via these denunciation invitations, any and all opponents a modern low-information Stalinist doesn’t like.

One of the great difficulties in perfecting technologies like radar and sonar revolves around the problem of distinguishing accurately between noise and the real McCoy. Is that an enemy bomber or missile out there, or is it just a flock of birds?
Donald Trump presents his opponents, and even some of his friends, with a similar problem. He speaks differently from most other statesmen on the world stage. He is not beholden to many of the principles of diplomacy (what some cynics like me might be tempted to describe as “nostrums”) that inform the usual script of diplomatic relations. What part of his behavior is noise?

Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” 2020 presidential hopeful former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) said President Donald Trump was engaged in a “concerted, organized attack against immigrants, against people of color.”
O’Rourke said, “From the outset of this campaign, even before this campaign, I talked about how dangerous President Trump’s open racism is, the Mexicans as rapists and criminals, the Muslims who should be banned from this country, how it doesn’t just offend us but it changes us. The rise in hate crime every single one of the last three years, the mosque in Victoria, Texas, burned to the ground the day after

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful South Bend, IN Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Americans who voted for President Donald Trump were “looking the other way on racism.”
Tapper asked, “You told me on this show two weeks ago that you believe President Trump is a white nationalist. Given that, do you think that it’s a racist act to cast a vote for President Trump in 2020?”
Buttigieg said, “Well, at best, it means looking the other way on racism. I think a lot of people are wondering what kind of deal even that is supposed to be.

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) both reportedly shared an antisemitic cartoon by an artist who participated in Iran’s Holocaust denial contest on their respective Instagram accounts on Friday, according to Forward editor Batya Ungar-Sargon.
Ungar-Sargon noticed that Omar and Tlaib had each shared the image on their Instagram “stories.” Both were barred from entering Israel Thursday because of their support for the “boycott, divestment, sanctions” (BDS) movement. Tlaib then applied for a humanitarian visa so she could visit her grandmother in a Palestinian village, promising not to promote boycotts of Israel while traveling there. Her request was granted, but she then turned down the offer Friday, claiming

Roving, cop-hating mobs erupted in violence, taunts and gunfire in Brooklyn overnight into Sunday, leaving three officers with minor injuries. At least some of the injuries were caused by “air mail,” objects thrown down at cops from rooftops, police at the scene in Bedford-Stuyvesant told The Post. By early Sunday, eight people had been arrested on charges of disorderly conduct.(Snip) At least six or seven gunshots rang out from a rooftop of the housing project shortly afterward, causing no injuries but sending scores of cops running toward the gunfire. The death of Jeffrey Epstein in the MCC federal jail has touched off no end of speculation. While the medical examiner’s conclusion indicating it was suicide has been made public, the report itself has not been released. Many don’t believe it. In many ways Epstein’s death reminds me of Sherlock Holmes’s mystery “Adventure in a Sealed Room” where a trained monkey was the culprit after lots of clues were sifted through. An online friend “Rocco,” a prison guard, agrees with me. He’s seen too much of this himself and knows how quickly and easily prisoners have killed themselves in locked rooms even when

WASHINGTON — Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III of Massachusetts is considering a primary challenge next year against Sen. Edward J. Markey, according to a senior Democratic official. Such a race could substantially alter the state’s political landscape and has the potential to elevate a fourth member of a Democratic dynasty to the Senate. Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, had publicly indicated that he intended to run for reelection next year. But in a conversation this week with the Democratic official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private deliberations, Kennedy, 38, said that he was

CNN’s Chris Cillizza tried valiantly to hew to the Party Line when writing about the story that President Trump is exploring the concept of acquiring Greenland from Denmark. We know that everything the 45th President does is bad, so the only question for CNN people is how to pick and present the data that tries to prove the point.
Alas for Cillizza (a graduate of Georgetown University), he chose (or more likely was assigned) the task of using the precedent of acquiring Alaska from Russia to comment on the possibility of a second Arctic acquisition, and he came up with this howler (snip) "It didn't work out so well..."

Roger Ogden at Patriot Fire videos went out this week to film the new border wall in Tecate, California. This clip below shows status of border barrier in Tecate, California.
Via Roger: On August 13th, 2019, I went to Tecate to see, if they had started building the planned new fence there. Tecate is about 20 miles east of San Diego/Tijuana. There is a contract with SLSCO Ltd. to build four miles of 30-foot-high bollard fence to replace the old, dilapidated landing-plate fence. I found that they had already started building the fence two months earlier. About a mile and a half of the fence had already been constructed.

I grew up in the countryside about 2 hours from Quito where I lived with my grandmother. I moved to the city where I met my husband and we had two kids. He was a mechanic and I worked odd jobs to help with the bills. My jobs always involved something to do with tourists from other countries. I would hear about a place called America and wanted to someday go see it for myself. I never wanted my kids to struggle or experience what I did growing up and knew that education was the way out. We placed my son in a private school

The Washington Monument will reopen to the public next month for the first time in more than three years, the U.S. National Park Service announced Friday.
Public tours of 555-foot-tall landmark will resume Sept. 19, the NPS said in a statement.
The world’s tallest building at the time of its completion in 1889, the Washington Monument was indefinitely shuttered in August 2016 due to issues with its elevator system.
Millions of dollars have since been invested in modernizing the monument’s elevator system and constructing a new security screening facility for visitors.
The monument had been previously slated to reopen this spring, but the NPS said in April that construction

The Trump administration announced long-awaited “public charge” immigration regulations this week, and the furor immediately kicked up to derangement level. Reason’s Shikha Dalmia called the policy a “complete abuse of the original understanding” of the law.
In the Washington Post, opinion writer Paul Waldman said the policy sends a message: “We hate you and we don’t want you here, and if you come we will treat you with all the cruelty we can muster.” CNN’s legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin went so far as to call the proposed regulation “un-American.”
There is very little nuance left in political discourse. Every administration policy is said to be the key

A movement by an enclave in the communist bloc to grant its people the greater freedoms enjoyed in the West — that’s the drama playing out in Hong Kong today. Yet as youthful protestors wave American flags and sing our national anthem, American support for their cause is being tepidly expressed, at best.
As Communist China’s strongman, Xi Jinping, deploys his troops at the border of the former British Crown Colony, clearly threatening armed intervention, the best President Trump has offered is to urge him to “quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem.” To what “problem” is the president referring? What prior example of the regime’s humanity is he summoning?

Perhaps when you think of the founding of the United States, you think of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Federalist Papers. Now, the New York Times wants to "reframe" your understanding of the nation's founding.
In the Times' view (which it hopes to make the view of millions of Americans), the country was actually founded in 1619, when the first Africans were brought to North America, to Virginia, to be sold as slaves.
This year marks the 400th anniversary of that event, and the Times has created something called the 1619 Project. This is what the paper hopes the project will accomplish:

As sailors and Marines are sailing in more contested waters, the blue-green team is getting creative about how to defend amphibious assault ships from enemy small boats and drones.
Members of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit were photographed sailing through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf this week with a Light Armored Vehicle on the flight deck.
The armored vehicle can be seen in the background of photos released by the Marine Corps on Wednesday, showing AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters flying off the amphibious assault ship Boxer. The LAV was first spotted by Phil Ewing, national security editor at NPR.

Jeffrey Epstein, inmate 76318-054, hated his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. It was cramped, dank and infested with vermin, so Mr. Epstein, long accustomed to using his wealth to play by his own rules, devised a way out.
He paid numerous lawyers to visit the jail for as many as 12 hours a day, giving him the right to see them in a private meeting room. Mr. Epstein was there for so long that he often appeared bored, sitting in silence with his lawyers, according to people who saw the meetings. While they were there, he and his entourage regularly emptied the two vending machines of drinks and snacks.

The Church of Scientology reached out to The Post Friday with an explosive response to word that Leah Remini’s A&E docuseries is going out with a bang.
News broke Thursday that the final episode of “Scientology and the Aftermath” will air Aug. 26, at Remini’s behest — it was not canceled. The former Scientologist-turned-anti-Scientology activist’s two-hour finale, taped in front of a studio audience of former E-Meter flock, will examine sexual assault allegations against Scientologist and “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson, who has not been charged with a crime and dubs the claims “beyond ridiculous.”
Remini, 49, will conduct interviews with two of Masterson’s accusers,

Back in June, California Gov. Gavin Newsom made an incredible claim about homeless people in his state. Asked why the homeless population hadn’t declined when he was Mayor of San Francisco, Newsom said, “The vast majority (of San Francisco’s homeless people) also come in from — and we know this — from Texas. Just (an) interesting fact.”Newsom’s claim was discounted by the LA Times last month but Politifact decided to investigate independently. This week the least reliable fact-checker in the business agreed that Newsom’s statement was absurd, giving it a “Pants on Fire” rating.

Text messages and emails from Nike executives entered in federal court on Friday paint a vivid portrait of the inner workings of grassroots basketball.
They include detailed plans to pay then-high school stars such as Zion Williamson and Romeo Langford, line-item accounting of alleged payments to the people around eventual No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton, and an acknowledgement by a top Nike executive that “the perception and resulting reality is that we dictate where players go to school.”
Controversial lawyer Michael Avenatti produced the exhibits on Friday that supported his allegations filed earlier this week that Nike has engaged in widespread corruption and under-the-table payments to high school players

As many as 50 vehicles were involved, but early reports indicated only one serious injury resulted after chain-reaction crashes in heavy rain in North Carolina on Saturday night.
The crashes happened around 6 p.m. along the Interstate 40/85 exchange in Mebane, northwest of the Raleigh-Durham area, according to local media reports.
Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions as the State Highway Patrol and towing crews responded, Raleigh’s WRAL-TV reported.

On Friday, Fox News’ “The Five” discussed the 2020 Democrats and how their campaigns are attempting to differentiate themselves from President Trump by endeavoring to be “boring.” Leftists (like Fox’s own Juan Williams) are under the impression that having Trump in the news every day is causing great anxiety among the American population. Their solution? Promises of being the “boring” president that you don’t have to think about every day.Given that most people only know the names of about 5 of the Dems running, that isn’t too much of a stretch.Williams – representing the left of center viewpoint –

In a Twitter message Saturday, U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw declared Saturday’s protests in Portland, Ore., “a sad showing,” and said the city’s Antifa activists paled in comparison to the demonstrators fighting for democracy in Hong Kong. “In Hong Kong,” the Republican congressman from Texas wrote, “antifascists wave American flags, demand freedom and actually fight fascists. “In Portland,” he continued, “ ‘antifascists’ burn American flags, demand violence in the name of socialism.”

Amazon employees and contractors from Costa Rica to India were caught reviewing thousands of recordings, of casual requests, private conversations and intimate moments, and sharing clips that they thought were funny in chat sessions with each other.
The Amazon product is always listening and maintains recordings of your conversations indefinitely.

Former CIA Chief John Brennan lashed out at President Trump Saturday morning following Trump’s wildly successful reelection rally in New Hampshire.Brennan is desperate to replace Trump in 2020 with a Democrat because Attorney General Bill Barr and US Attorney John Durham are investigating Brennan’s role in Spygate.
