You can’t walk through the streets of Manhattan these days without smelling weed.
Even as evidence mounts of the health problems associated with marijuana, New York has insisted on joining other greedy states scrambling to legalize this deceptively dangerous drug.
It makes no sense at a time when American youth is suffering from an unprecedented mental health crisis.
And, in all honesty, we cannot rule out a connection between increasing marijuana use, mental illness and the recent spate of mass shootings by disturbed young males.

Not denying the possible link, but once this becomes a "red flag" then so will anti depressants, anti anxiety drugs, etc... Now we are into a persons medical records...

I may be wrong about this but, isn't is already not legal for a gun to be purchased if you are an illegal drug user. I believe the question is on the back ground application you fill out at the dealer. Your state may make it legal. But it is still a federal crime. You can lie on the form and be guilty of perjury. How about we enforce this?

Pot used to have a reputation of turning users psychotic. Then we had hollywood promoting the laid-back, uncaring joint-toker.
Was it a lie? From Hollywood? s/o.

It only make sense that when you use a drug like marijuana that the outcome is unknown. Each individual may react differently. We have legalized this drug before the country consequences of it has been properly studied. I suspect that when long term studies are completed that it won’t be all sweetness and light when it comes to the real effect that this drug can have on some people. Society has labelled it as a harmless drug that mellow you out. I don’t believe that will be the case after real research has been done regarding the long term effects of this substance.

The dirty little secret is all these mass shooters are on medication or mind altering drugs! Why hide the fact.

Still remember serving on a county Grand Jury listening to cases for a month. There were three homicides, and every one was alcohol fueled. Some drugs (legal and illegal) are probably the same. Figure the murderers were already predisposed towards violence and alcohol and drugs enhance that predisposition. That's what is happening in these mass shootings. Too bad there isn't a test for violence, and then restrict what those people can use.

Maybe we should refer to this activity as "recreational" mass shootings?

What about ritalin? It was the drug of choice that was applied to young boys to cure their childhood behavior. Was it applied to the latest shooters? Please clarify.

Liberalism is the primary disease, marijuana is just the side show. We count the pothead shooters, what about the drivers? Murder comes in many forms.

Pot use - especially in the young - has been linked to schizophrenia, the onset of which in young men is usually between the ages of 18 and 25. (In women, if it comes, it comes later - in their 30s.) Reasonable people know that some are more vulnerable to drugs in general - legal and not. Some of us have bad reactions to drugs others can use without difficulty. When we use substances that affect the brain, we really don’t know what we are going to get...

Baby Boomers smoked lot's more pot than youth today. And they didn't go on mass shootings.
It's the desensitization of video games/movies plus Presidents of the United States that endorse violent groups and invite them to the White House to honor them and tell them to bring a gun to a knife fight.

If you do a search on the word psychosis and read a few articles, heavy pot use is listed as a cause and especially among young males (late teens/early 20's). .

#13 - It says right in the article that today's pot is five times more powerful than the stuff the Boomers smoked in the 60s, and cites many studies showing the link between pot and psychosis.

Marihuana today is even more potent. If you ever tried this drug you know it is very dangerous. It makes you feel so intelligent and next day you do not remember any of the great ideas you had. During puberty your brain is rewired and this abnormal neural activity must be devastating. I can believe most mass shooters toke, and beyond this who would want their sons to grow up to be losers? Women seem more controlled because Marihuana makes you fat as you crave for sweet foods. And of course Marihuana is a gateway drug. That is what I think.

#13, your point is well taken. Re: Baby Boomers, THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) the psychoactive component that causes addiction, in the 1990’s was less than 2%. Marijuana from dispensaries in Colorado in 1917 tested with THC content at 28%. Today’s marijuana is potent stuff.

Smoked a ton of pot in my day. Still enjoy it. I own several weapons...never killed a human being ever(except a paper one). Never even thought about it...OK, once-an X boss.

Of the two people I personally know who have smoked MJ, only one of them thinks it is NOT a gateway to other drugs. That person has very low self esteem, and seeks advice from anyone who will give it. Personally, I smoked cigarettes for 10 years, and quitting was a beo-tch. I will never go back to cigs. My dad thought cigs would lead to MJ (bless his heart.) I have been quit for 47 years and I am still bragging about it.

In Florida we have the evil John Morgan, chief ambulance chaser "for the people"(that made him a billionaire) spending millions to get pot legalized. He got a constitutional amendment through for medical pot use and now want it totally legal. Not with my grandkids here.
