SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom formally apologized Tuesday and pushed the state to reckon with California’s dark history of violence, mistreatment and neglect of Native Americans, saying it amounted to genocide.
The Democratic governor met with tribal leaders at the future site of the California Indian Heritage Center, where he also announced the creation of a council to examine the state’s role in campaigns of extermination and exploitation.
Throughout history, the California government was key to efforts to remove and kill Native Americans who lived on land that would become part of what is now the world’s fifth-largest economy.
“Genocide.

It went both ways, Newsom. Indians conducted massacres too.

What’s this? is Gavin planning to crash the democrat presidential
party? Is this his platform? Vote for me and I’ll give the Western
half of the USA to Mexico and the Eastern half to the Injuns.

Go to any Thesaurus and look up the phrase "Human Fungus" and there you will find a picture of Gavin Newsom.
What an evil, loathsome, communist toad.

Just another attempt to distract the public from the terrible problems that the Dims have brought upon Kalifornia.

If this was genocide, European Americans were totally incompetent at carrying it out.

I have been hooked on Gunsmoke lately, and would note the writers tried to balance out the interests of settlers, Indians, drovers(cowboys).
In addition, the writers show the conflicts between the Army and the Indians and Locals. Add to that, government Indian agents who were appointed to deal with the Indians, and represent them.
Finally, the period right after the Civil War had Northerners and Southerners who were looking for work or forming criminal gangs.
Matt Dillon was presented as a U.S. Marshal who spoke some native languages above the conflict, or he shot people, including soldiers, indians, gang members, settlers and cowboys.
I realize it was fiction, but the writers struggled with the conflicting interests.
During the original run of Gunsmoke, 1955-1975, I missed a lot of the underlying conflicts.
That said, did we treat the Indians badly? Yes. And when white men married Indian women, their offspring were treated badly. (Burt Reynolds played Quint, half Commanche, and he frequently found it necessary to beat the snot out of nasty white people. )
Just imagine the suffering and discrimination Senator Elizabeth Warren underwent, growing up a Cherokee. Will Newsom apologize to her?

Recent archeological digs prove pretty conclusively that there was someone here before the 'Native Americans' traveled over the land bridge from Asia. And, those people were not of Asian descent. They are being called Paleo Americans. Never very numerous, they were apparently killed off by the 'Native Americans' early on.

My Pecos River ancestors would argue the Comanches were bent on genocide.

Wikipedia describes genocide as "..intentional action to destroy a people (usually defined as an ethnic, national, racial, or religious group) in whole or in part." Newsom is suggesting the United States engaged in an intentional program of destruction of the Native American Indians in the state of California. That is a complete lie. These clowns toss around these terms while having no idea what they actually mean. Neither the United States or California engaged in genocide against anyone, including the Native Americans. The locals were treated pretty poorly but they sure as heck were not subjected to 'genocide'. What a jerk.

#8 is right. There were people living on this soil before the "native indian" wiped them out with their peaceful living with nature and the peace pipe.
Now as for newsom, he should read history. We won the land that is now Kallifornia, and ALL OF MEXICO.
After we won the Mexican-American war (1846-1849), most of the land won was given back to Mexico. . And for those that dont know, like newsom, the mexicans started the war. We ended it. We won that land fair and square. newsom best join the USA or just move to mexico that he sems to love more

To our dismay, Newsom is correct but it was not just California, it was the entire country from Canada to Mexico and everything in between. He conveniently left out the part where the Spanish Conquistadores killed, robbed, raped and pillaged every indigenous tribe from the southern tip of South America, the islands of the Carribbean to half-way up the current United States in their quest for gold. Then the Spanish were removed from most of their conquests by the English and others. The world has a long, violent history and this is just one scene out of the whole movie. We can't award reparations to everybody but according to liberal logic, everybody is owed. Yes, Man is a warlike creature.
